Despite only launching a year and a half ago, DC Comics’ Absolute Universe line has already made a significant impact on the comic book world. Few predicted the huge popularity of series like Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman. However, these books continue to sell incredibly well, and that’s fantastic news because each new Absolute release also means more stunning cover art.
As a huge fan of the Absolute Universe, I’m always blown away by the artwork. With six main titles, there are close to a hundred standard covers already, and that’s not even counting all the special variants! These covers really help draw you into each story. I personally always know I’m in for something visually stunning with an Absolute Martian Manhunter book – Javier Rodríguez is a genius! And I still get chills looking at Giuseppe Camuncoli’s cover for Absolute Evil #1. I’ve put together a list of 7 of my favorite standard Absolute Universe covers – check them out!
7. Absolute Flash #13

While most Absolute Flash covers depict the Flash running at high speed, the cover for issue #13 by Nick Robles takes a different approach. It shows Wally West taking a break, shoes off, and lost in thought while answering a phone call. This cover perfectly captures Wally’s current emotional state – he’s grieving the loss of his father and is emotionally exhausted. Though I enjoy the energetic covers this series usually features, I especially appreciate artwork that reveals the character’s inner thoughts and feelings.
6. Absolute Green Lantern #7

As a huge comic fan, I was really excited to see the Emotional Spectrum finally taking shape in Absolute Green Lantern. This cover for issue #7 was our first real glimpse of the other light energies in this corner of the DC universe. It’s a striking image – Jo Mullein, glowing green, watching over Tomar Re as a Red Lantern and John Stewart as a Yellow Lantern, all set against this incredible cosmic background. It’s a wonderfully strange and expansive piece of art, blending familiar elements with things that are still mysterious, and honestly, that’s exactly what I love about this series.
5. Absolute Superman #15

I appreciate that the Absolute Universe series clearly signals the beginning of new story arcs. Even without the text on the cover of Absolute Superman #15, Rafa Sandoval’s artwork immediately conveys a fresh start for Superman. Unlike previous covers that showed a somber Superman in darker colors, this one depicts him flying joyfully through a bright, sunny Metropolis. It really feels like we’re seeing Superman become the hero he’s meant to be.
4. Absolute Martian Manhunter #10

I absolutely love Absolute Martian Manhunter. Javier Rodríguez consistently delivers fantastic artwork inside each issue, but the cover of Absolute Martian Manhunter #10 is truly striking. It depicts Agent John Jones and the Martian Manhunter in danger, entangled in a dissolving American flag held by a mysterious force. This image cleverly hints at the series’ current villains – a supernatural being that eliminates threats in the name of national security. It might just be me, but seeing these heroes battle a dangerous form of nationalism feels particularly unsettling and timely.
3. Absolute Evil #1

Prior to the Wonder Woman and Batman team-up, the Absolute Universe storyline first united its villains. Artist Giuseppe Camuncoli revealed a first look at Absolute Evil with a striking cover image. The cover features torn photographs of the Absolute Universe heroes scattered on the ground, contrasted with six villainous hands stacked together, representing their alliance. Released to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Absolute Universe, the cover effectively signaled the villains’ intent to escalate their efforts and maintain control.
2. Absolute Wonder Woman #18

It was tough choosing just one cover from Absolute Wonder Woman because Hayden Sherman consistently delivers amazing artwork. I particularly loved the cover for issue #19, which features Wonder Woman battling Zatanna with Veronica Cale watching. It’s a truly stunning image – the contrasting blue and green colors, the creative depiction of their magic, and the overall composition all work perfectly together. It’s unusual to see magic so effectively visualized on a comic book cover, and this one nails it.
1. Absolute Batman #1

Okay, look, it might be the most obvious pick, but I can’t ignore it: Nick Dragotta’s cover for Absolute Batman #1 has exploded in popularity. Seriously, it debuted in October 2024 and it’s already right up there with covers like The Dark Knight Returns #1 or The Killing Joke in terms of recognition. It’s not flashy – just Batman striking a really cool, intimidating pose – but that image has become iconic within the Absolute Universe. Honestly, if you’re still not convinced, just do a quick search and see how many comics have already spoofed it. It’s everywhere!
