7 Best Dark Fantasy TV Shows Of All Time

Dark fantasy is a tricky genre for TV and movies. Many try, but few succeed, and good examples are rare—particularly now with streaming services. It’s hard to build a complex, story-focused show when you don’t know if it will last, as we’ve seen with cancellations like Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. This makes it no surprise that truly great dark fantasy series are so uncommon.

Despite a lot of options out there, some truly exceptional dark fantasy series still stand out. Here are 7 of the best ever created, each offering unique stories and cleverly mixing different genres. Some of these series unfortunately ended too soon, while others had the perfect run, and a few are still being made! Every series on this list is fantastic, and you might even wish some of them lasted forever.

7) Penny Dreadful

Penny Dreadful is a captivating show that seamlessly mixes gothic horror and dark fantasy. It draws on classic horror elements and features iconic characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. The first season follows Sir Malcolm, an explorer desperate to save his daughter from the vampires haunting the city. He enlists the help of Ethan Chandler, a mysterious American, and Vanessa Ives, a gifted clairvoyant, hoping to rescue his child and destroy the evil that took her. With a stellar cast, brilliant acting, and stunning visuals – including costumes, music, and cinematography – the show is truly exceptional.

Penny Dreadful is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

6) Lovecraft Country

HBO Max’s Lovecraft Country skillfully blends horror and fantasy, and the buzz surrounding it is well-deserved. The show, set during the Jim Crow era, centers on Atticus Freeman’s road trip to find his father, where he confronts both supernatural creatures and the harsh realities of racism. In fact, the racism experienced by the characters is often more frightening than the monsters themselves. Though the show takes creative liberties with H.P. Lovecraft’s work and had some storytelling issues, it’s a bold and powerful series. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after one season, coinciding with legal issues involving actor Jonathan Majors. Despite its imperfections, Lovecraft Country is absolutely worth watching.

Lovecraft Country is available to stream on HBO Max.

5) Merlin

The 1998 Syfy miniseries Merlin is a fantastic show that sadly didn’t get enough attention. It features an incredibly talented cast – including Sam Neill, Miranda Richardson, and Isabella Rossellini – and tells the complete life story of the wizard Merlin, showcasing his triumphs and failures. While the special effects haven’t aged perfectly, the strong acting, beautiful costumes, and compelling story more than compensate. Packed with battles, dragons, romance, and classic Arthurian legends, this four-hour series is a must-watch for any fantasy enthusiast.

Merlin is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

4) The Witcher

Okay, let’s talk about The Witcher. Seriously, it feels like everyone is already talking about it, and for good reason! Whether you know it from the books, the incredibly popular video games, or the Netflix show, it’s a world worth diving into. Henry Cavill is fantastic as Geralt, a monster hunter with a complicated past, and the show really focuses on his relationships with Yennefer, a powerful sorceress, and Ciri, a young woman with a huge destiny. Honestly, the action sequences are phenomenal – some of the best I’ve seen – but what really hooked me, especially in those first two seasons, was the compelling story and the amazing chemistry between the actors. It’s a show that keeps you wanting more.

The Witcher is available to stream on Netflix.

3) Castlevania

Inspired by the classic video game, Castlevania is widely considered one of the greatest anime series ever made, and it’s visually stunning. This dark, medieval fantasy expertly blends horror with a compelling story about Trevor Belmont, who teams up with an unlikely duo—the son of his enemy and a young sorceress—to protect Eastern Europe from Vlad Dracula Tepes. Driven by revenge for his wife’s death, Dracula plans to wipe out humanity, and it’s up to Belmont and his companions to stop him. The series is deeply moving, balancing humor, scares, and heartfelt relationships, making it a truly worthwhile experience.

Castlevania is available to stream on Netflix.

2) Interview with the Vampire

While it leans towards horror, Interview with the Vampire is too compelling to exclude. This adaptation of Ann Rice’s novel follows Louis de Pointe du Lac, a vampire now living in Dubai, as he recounts his life story to journalist Daniel Malloy. The series begins in early 20th-century New Orleans, detailing Louis’s complex relationship with the captivating but dangerous vampire, Lestat du Lioncourt, and the unconventional family they create—and ultimately lose. It’s a visually stunning production, boasting exceptional performances, costumes, and writing. Though it doesn’t strictly follow the book, many viewers find it surpasses the source material.

You can now watch Interview with the Vampire on Netflix. Season 3, now called The Vampire Lestat, will be available on AMC.

1) Arcane

No list of great shows would be complete without mentioning Arcane. At its heart, it’s the compelling story of sisters Vi and Jinx, each struggling with their past and what they believe their future holds. The show follows them as they live in two very different cities – the glamorous, advanced Piltover and the gritty, dangerous undercity of Zaun – and become caught on opposing sides of a conflict rooted in the actions of those who came before them. With stunning animation, a fantastic soundtrack, and two seasons full of emotion, Arcane is a truly exceptional dark fantasy series that will leave a lasting impression.

Arcane is available to stream on Netflix.
