7 Best DC Movie Anti-Heroes, Ranked

Marvel’s cinematic universe is increasingly embracing complex characters—anti-heroes who often cause as much trouble as they solve. The Guardians of the Galaxy are a prime example, and the new team known briefly as the Thunderbolts—made up of former mercenaries—aren’t afraid to kill. DC’s movies haven’t quite reached this point yet, sticking with traditionally heroic figures like Superman. However, DC’s shows on HBO Max, like ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Creature Commandos,’ are exploring more morally gray areas.

The new DC Universe’s Superman will always follow his own moral compass and prioritize saving people, even if it goes against expectations. This is a shift for the franchise, which has often focused on individualistic and rebellious characters. Here’s a list of the seven best anti-heroes from DC movies, ranked from best to worst.

7) Guy Gardner

I’ve been reading about the DCU, and they claim they’re not really using anti-heroes in their films right now, but I’m not sure I completely agree. Take Guy Gardner, for example. He’s a Green Lantern, sure, but he pretty much does whatever he wants and isn’t afraid to betray anyone. It’s obvious he’s got some deep-seated insecurities, and those almost get him into a huge mess when he tries to start a fight with Superman without even listening to what’s going on. He does help out when he absolutely has to, but he makes sure everyone knows he’s not thrilled about it!

6) Catwoman

Selina Kyle, or Catwoman, is very different from someone like Guy – she makes it clear she doesn’t want to be a hero. In both The Dark Knight Rises and The Batman, she prioritizes her own goals and won’t hesitate to betray Batman if it benefits her. Despite this, she isn’t entirely selfish and will help those who help her. Just don’t expect her to stay for long, as she always has other priorities and bigger plans.

5) Black Adam

Comic book writers often debate whether Black Adam is a hero with flaws or simply a villain. The DC movie universe avoids this question, portraying Dwayne Johnson’s character as fiercely protective of his own community, and little else. His destructive actions draw the attention of the Justice Society, who he quickly defeats before deeming them worthy of his respect. However, earning the respect of the Justice Society doesn’t guarantee friendship with all heroes.

4) Red Hood

DC’s animated movies are often overlooked, but they’re just as good as the live-action ones. The best example of a complex anti-hero is in Batman: Under the Red Hood, where Jason Todd—formerly Batman’s sidekick—comes back to life seeking revenge on the Joker. It’s easy to see why Jason is angry, considering Batman couldn’t save him. But the Red Hood’s methods are extreme, and he’s willing to destroy Gotham City to get what he wants.

3) Huntress

Everyone knows Bruce Wayne’s tragic backstory, but Helena Bertinelli also lost her parents and ended up alone. Unlike Bruce, however, she didn’t become a hero. Instead, she gave in to her anger and began tracking down those responsible for her family’s deaths. Even after joining forces with the Birds of Prey, she never lost her ruthless edge, continuing to fight crime in her own violent way.

2) Bloodsport

It’s definitely not heroic to accept money to commit a crime, especially when that crime is an attempt on the life of someone as selfless as Superman. That’s how Robert DuBois ends up in prison, and eventually joins Task Force X in The Suicide Squad. Instead of just plotting his escape, DuBois focuses on protecting his teammates and inspiring them to improve themselves.

1) Harley Quinn

Bloodsport defends Harley Quinn, a complex character in the DC Universe. She began her film journey as the Joker’s chaotic partner, but eventually broke away to forge her own path. While becoming independent, Harley realized she could use her skills for good. However, this doesn’t mean she’s gone soft – she’s still just as capable of punishing those who deserve it, and maybe even more so now that she’s changed.
