This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, and Bandai Namco is celebrating this significant milestone in grand fashion. This particular Gundam series was instrumental in popularizing the brand in the Western world, resulting in Gunpla models being sold in the United States and a generation of young girls becoming avid fans of anime protagonists grappling with complex emotional issues. Throughout 2025, Bandai Namco has been actively promoting Gundam Wing, partnering with video games and KFC, among other endeavors. The company even dedicated an entire panel at San Diego Comic-Con to share a new animated short that may suggest a continuation of the legendary anime’s storyline.
To carry on with the festivities, we’ve compiled a collection of top battles from the series. These battles stood out significantly in Gundam Wing, showcasing intricate fight sequences that were relatively uncommon on American TV during that era. Something about watching a towering figure brandishing a scythe, effortlessly decimating tanks and smaller robots, captivated viewers. Although the fights and animation may seem slightly outdated now, they remain iconic and worthy of recalling.
7) Gundam Deathscythe Hell vs. Mercurius & Vayeate
In the anime series, Gundam Wing, the mobile suits Mercurius and Vayeate often tend to be overshadowed by the famous Fab Five, receiving significantly less recognition from fans. Despite this, they are engaging little mechs with some thrilling battles to watch. Duo’s decisive victory against both the Mercurius and Vayeate towards the end of the show was a lopsided affair, but it stood out as one of the rare instances where the Gundam Deathscythe Hell confronted opponents that weren’t mere cannon fodder. The battle between the Deathscythe Hell and Mercurius and Vayeate is a short yet entertaining sequence that builds up to the climax of the show.
6) Mercurius & Vayeate vs. Wing Gundam Zero
In the storyline of “Gundam Wing,” things get rather complex when the primary characters depart Earth and re-enter the space colonies. Heero and Trowa infiltrate OZ, taking control of the Mercurius and Vayeate. It can be tricky to understand what Heero and Trowa aimed to achieve in the long run. However, this situation resulted in an exciting fight against the chaotic Wing Gundam Zero, operated by a troubled Quatre. This was the first time we saw Wing Gundam Zero in action, demonstrating its unbreakable nature. Eventually, the Wing Gundam Zero became the series’ most renowned mobile suit, but it was initially presented as a machine built for annihilation.
5) Wing Gundam vs. Tallgeese
In the animated series “Gundam Wing,” Heero and Zechs can be seen as analogous to Amuro and Char Aznable from the original “Mobile Suit Gundam.” Until Zechs obtained control of the Tallgeese, the main Gundam pilots in “Gundam Wing” were virtually invincible. The Tallgeese granted Zechs parity with the Wing Gundam. Following the self-destruction of the Wing Gundam, Zechs repaired it so that he could engage Heero in a significant showdown. The most memorable combat between the Tallgeese and the rebuilt Wing Gundam occurred during their rematch duel.
4) Chang Wufei vs. Treize Khushrenada
In the anime series Gundam Wing, not all compelling conflicts stemmed from the mobile suits. One memorable instance was Chang Wufei’s sword duel with Treize Khushrenada, which set up a significant relationship between the characters that became crucial in the finale. This short, unusual duel, while brief compared to their subsequent mecha battles, left a lasting impression due to its unconventional nature. In fact, such non-mecha conflicts are quite rare within the Gundam series as a whole. Although their rematch in mobile suits was more extensive, it didn’t deliver the same level of satisfaction. The unique sword duel between Wufei and Treize stands out on our list because of its distinctiveness from other Gundam franchise battles.
3) Wing Gundam Zero vs. Altron
In my perspective, “Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz” surpasses the main series in many aspects, boasting deeper narratives and more intricate character drives. What truly sets “Endless Waltz” apart is its climactic battle – a confrontation between two of the primary five pilots, Heero and Chang. Though Chang has often been perceived as an unsympathetic figure, his reasons for fighting are multifaceted. He’s standing up against Earth, as it failed to support the soldiers left behind after the war with White Fang.
In this battle, it’s Chang who engages in combat using his Gundam Altron, while Heero takes up the Wing Gundam Zero, a legendary machine. Interestingly, this encounter marks the sole instance where the Wing Gundam Zero engages in a one-on-one confrontation. The two titans of machinery stand their ground, neither gaining an advantage until Heero yields and plunges into the heart of the ocean. The fight choreography is top-notch, showcasing swift movements and precise timing that are among the best in the series. Although it may not be the climactic final battle fans anticipate with the primary Gundam, the emotional resonance is potent enough to keep viewers hooked.
2) Versus the Serpent Army
In the epic clash between our main characters and the Serpent Army depicted in “Endless Waltz”, this moment stands out as a significant milestone within the Gundam series. Characters like Zechs in Tallgeese III and Lucrezia Noin in Tauros also participated, adding to the intensity of the fight against the Serpents. For the first time in Gundam history, our heroes were portrayed as genuine champions. The final battle boasted spectacular animation and flawless choreography. Each Gundam machine had its shining moment, and when all seemed lost, the Wing Gundam Zero swooped down from above, unleashing a powerful double blast that decimated the enemies. The climax of “Endless Waltz” is one of the most thrilling sequences in the entire Gundam series, making the movie a must-watch for this extraordinary scene alone.
1) Wing Gundam Zero vs. Epyon
At the end of ‘Gundam Wing’, Zechs’ motivations were as straightforward as a smoothie, while White Fang’s scheme was so wickedly evil it was tough to find any complexity in their conflict. However, the thrilling climactic battle between Heero and his Wing Gundam Zero against Zechs with Epyon stands out as one of the most exhilarating actions in the entire Gundam series. The animation in this scene was spot-on, with the robots’ movements being sharp and fluid. It was a well-balanced fight, with neither fighter gaining an edge until Heero severed one of Epyon’s arms decisively. This high-speed battle showcased ‘Gundam Wing’ at its animation peak. No final duel in the Gundam franchise has ever been as impressive as the Wing Gundam Zero versus Epyon fight.
