The Marvel Cinematic Universe is renowned for featuring one of the most iconic comic book movie villains ever, Thanos, portrayed by Josh Brolin. After his last appearance in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, there have been several compelling villains that have emerged to fill the void he left. Prior to Thanos’ iconic portrayal in “Avengers: Infinity War”, characters like Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) stood out as memorable adversaries. Since the release of “Endgame”, the MCU has introduced some fantastic new villains for its heroes, although some, like Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), Galactus (Ralph Ineson), and Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), didn’t quite meet the high expectations set for them.
Among the seven new Marvel Cinematic Universe antagonists who debuted post-“Avengers: Endgame”, these characters have significantly strengthened the series, standing out as outstanding adversaries for Phase 4 and future phases.
7) Kingpin
In the gritty world of Marvel’s Netflix shows, I found Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (portrayed brilliantly by Vincent D’Onofrio), to be an unforgettable menace. His chilling presence was palpable in Daredevil, and he continues to send shivers down my spine as he steps into the limelight of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Fisk’s smaller yet impactful roles in the Disney+ series, Hawkeye and Echo, have only heightened my anticipation for his return as the primary antagonist in Daredevil: Born Again. This powerful crime lord has a knack for rising from the ashes of defeat, and his new role as New York City’s mayor in Daredevil: Born Again makes him more menacing than ever before.
Ruthless and methodical, Kingpin is one of the few MCU villains that exude an air of invincibility. He doesn’t rely on superpowers to wreak havoc; instead, he uses his cunning intellect and vast resources. His rivalry with Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) has thus far delivered gripping tension and unexpected twists, and I have no doubt that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will elevate him to the ranks of all-time great MCU bad guys.
In short, get ready for Kingpin’s grand return, as he’s set to leave an indelible mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
6) Wenwu
In the movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the antagonist, portrayed by Tony Leung as Wenwu, possesses both immense power and a heartbreaking past. Before becoming the ruthless leader of the Ten Rings organization, he was a renowned conqueror who raised Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Xialing (Meng’er Zhang). However, when his wife and their mother, Ying Li (Fala Chen), was killed, Wenwu spiraled into a life of violence and revenge.
Although he yearned to protect his children and rectify the mistakes of his past, the loss of his beloved partner left him shattered. Despite this sympathetic backstory, Wenwu’s powers when donning the Ten Rings are nothing short of extraordinary. As a skilled combatant, Wenwu stands out in “Shang-Chi” and makes for an impressive villain within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
5) Namor
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the character Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta), the ruler of the underwater nation Talokan, made a striking appearance. This powerful mutant launched an attack on Wakanda when they refused to aid him in his quest for war against the surface world. It’s thrilling to watch Namor in battle, especially as he soars through the air with his spear in hand. Though he may appear ruthless, Namor has a compelling motivation for safeguarding his people – centuries ago, Spanish colonizers drove the Talokanil from their land and forced them into the sea. Namor’s leadership is crucial to preserving their home from further harm. Since Avengers: Endgame, Namor has been one of the most intricate villains we’ve seen, and it’ll be exciting to see what becomes of him in Avengers: Doomsday, now that an alliance with Wakanda has been established.
4) Green Goblin
Fans of superhero films adored Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, and his menacing role was reprised effectively in Spider-Man: No Way Home within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being transported to Earth-616 by Doctor Strange’s faulty spell, Norman initially seems frightened and bewildered, but eventually transforms back into the Green Goblin and clashes with the titular character. He exhibits wickedness as he assaults Peter Parker/Spider Man, and expresses distress when returning to his normal self. The Green Goblin’s actions in No Way Home contributed to some of the most captivating scenes, further cementing his status as one of the finest comic book villains ever brought to life on the silver screen.
3) The Scarlet Witch
In the aftermath of WandaVision, where I lost my family, my life took a dark turn as the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Overwhelmed by grief and desperate to find my children across different realities, I found myself wielding power beyond measure. The destruction I caused was immense – from wiping out everyone at Kamar-Taj to invading an alternate version of myself and obliterating Earth-838’s Illuminati. My actions were chilling, yet it’s hard not to feel for the character I portray, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who has been through so much pain. Even as I committed heinous acts, there was a palpable sense of sorrow beneath the surface. The Scarlet Witch remains one of the most captivating characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I can’t wait to show more of her extraordinary capabilities in future stories.
2) The Void
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), The Void stands out as an unprecedented antagonist. The series “Thunderbolts” introduces Bob Reynolds, portrayed by Lewis Pullman, who enrolled in the Sentry program while grappling with mental health issues and drug addiction. Following his transformation into the mighty Sentry, Bob’s sinister aspect, known as the Void, surfaced.
The intriguing trio of personalities belonging to Bob unfold across “Thunderbolts,” and the terrifying nature of the Void as a villain is captivating. Cruel and merciless, the Void instills fear in both Bob and New York citizens by trapping them within a dimension comprised of interconnected trauma rooms, compelling victims to re-live their most tormenting experiences.
The Void’s power is formidable and versatile, making his upcoming role in “Avengers: Doomsday” highly anticipated.
1) Agatha Harkness
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-“Endgame”, it’s quite possible that the most impressive villain to emerge from the TV shows could be an unexpected choice, but Agatha Harkness (portrayed by Kathryn Hahn) truly earns
Agatha stands out among all post-“Endgame” villains due to her deep background and intricate character. The Marvel Cinematic Universe seldom provides its antagonists with such an opportunity to delve into their individual stories, and although Agatha’s tale unfolded on Disney+, the powerful sorceress remains the most striking MCU villain of the past five years.
