Green Arrow has a long and interesting story. He first appeared in 1941, during the early days of comic books, in More Fun Comics #73. Initially, he was very similar to Batman, but with a Robin Hood theme instead of a bat one. Over time, Green Arrow gained a sidekick named Speedy and embarked on classic superhero adventures from his base, the Arrowcave, and in his vehicle, the Arrowcar. Like many heroes of that era, he eventually became less popular in the 1950s. However, the character was revived in the 1960s and has since become a well-respected vigilante, largely thanks to the supporting characters known as the Arrow family.
As a huge fan of superhero teams, I’ve always been fascinated by the way Oliver Queen, the Arrow, built his crew. He never really worked alone, and over time, so many awesome characters joined his fight! The ‘Arrow Family’ is genuinely one of the most skilled groups of heroes around, and they’ve got a knack for unique approaches. Here’s my take on the seven best members – a seriously cool collection of vigilantes from the comics.
7) Mia Dearden

The year 2000 was an exciting time for Green Arrow fans. After Green Arrow (Ollie) seemingly died in the mid-1990s, his son Connor took over the role for several years. But director Kevin Smith successfully convinced DC Comics to bring Ollie back to life. This led to a very popular run of the Green Arrow comic book, which also introduced the character Mia Dearden. Ollie rescues Mia, a teenage runaway, and takes her under his wing, training her to become the new Speedy. She later joined the Teen Titans, bravely revealed she had HIV, and has been a part of the Green Arrow family ever since. Mia proved to be a fantastic Speedy, with a memorable costume and a significant role during a thriving period for DC Comics.
6) Red Canary

Black Canary is a well-established hero, and has become closely associated with the Arrow team. Dinah Drake, known as Red Canary, always admired Black Canary and was inspired to become a vigilante herself during a major global crisis. Eventually, she teamed up with her idol and has since been a supporting member of both the Arrow family and the Justice League. She’s a strong but often overlooked heroine, and fans hope DC continues to develop her story.
5) Lian Harper

Man, Lian Harper’s story is wild! As a fan, I remember her as this adorable little kid – the daughter of Cheshire and Roy Harper – back in the early 2000s. It was so heartbreaking when she was killed in Justice League: Cry for Justice, and honestly, it felt like a really dark moment for DC. For a long time, she stayed gone, and it was tough. Then, with all the reboots and changes to the DC Universe, they revealed it wasn’t really death, but a long-term plan by Amanda Waller! Apparently, she’d been moved through time and space and grew up in secret. Now she’s back as the Cheshire Cat, and it’s awesome. She’s still so young, trying to figure things out and reconnect with her family, and she’s a really compelling character. Seriously, DC, we need more Lian Harper stories! She always brings something special whenever she appears.
4) Connor Hawke

During the 1990s, DC Comics often reinvented its popular characters, and Green Arrow was no exception. Oliver Queen was temporarily replaced by his previously unknown son, Connor. This new hero quickly became popular throughout the mid to late ’90s and remained a presence even after Oliver Queen was resurrected. Connor is a highly skilled fighter, proficient with all kinds of weapons, and an excellent archer in his own right. He’s become a significant figure in the Green Arrow story and is a beloved character for many fans.
3) Roy Harper

Roy Harper, also known as Speedy and later Arsenal and Red Arrow, is a long-standing character in DC Comics, dating back to the Golden Age. His close partnership with Green Arrow has led him to be part of many different teams, including the Teen Titans, the Outsiders, and even the Justice League. He’s a complex hero with a troubled past – famously, he was the first superhero depicted struggling with drug addiction. Over the years, he’s gone through many changes, from a founding member of the Teen Titans to a gritty, modern hero. Despite often being overlooked, Roy Harper is a surprisingly important figure in the DC Universe.
2) Oliver Queen

Green Arrow is a long-standing and important hero in the DC Universe. Often compared to a more approachable and politically progressive version of Batman, he’s a skilled fighter dedicated to protecting people, though he can be bossy and unintentionally create problems for others. Despite appearing to be straightforward, he’s actually quite intelligent and resilient. Having debuted 85 years ago, Green Arrow has faced a wide range of villains, teamed up with groups like the Seven Soldiers of Victory and the Justice League, and gained wider recognition through the CW television series.
1) Black Canary

Black Canary originated during the Golden Age of comics and enjoyed some popularity, but her visibility diminished as that era ended. She reappeared with the Justice Society in the Silver Age, later moving to Earth-One, and her history was redefined by the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Becoming Green Arrow’s partner significantly shaped her character going forward. Over time, Black Canary has become a highly respected member of the Justice League, even leading the team, and is a fan favorite across many different groups within the DC Universe. Surprisingly, she’s become a truly iconic figure for fans across generations.
