Marvel Comics played a huge role in making anti-heroes popular. This trend really took off in the 1970s with films like Dirty Harry and Death Wish. Marvel introduced the first two major comic book anti-heroes: Wolverine, a mutant, and the Punisher, a human. Both characters became incredibly popular and paved the way for many more. Wolverine, in particular, was influential, as he was the first of numerous mutant anti-heroes. Considering how mutants are often treated, it’s easy to see why so many of them followed a similar path.
In a world where mutants are feared and often hunted, many still strive to make a difference. However, they often reject the approaches of conventional heroes, choosing to fight fire with fire. Here are seven of the best anti-heroic mutants in Marvel Comics, who get the job done, even if their methods are brutal. (Note: Deadpool, while a popular anti-hero, isn’t a mutant and won’t be included.)
7) Domino
The X-Force team is known for having particularly lethal members, many of whom operate as anti-heroes. Among them, Domino stands out as one of the most capable and compelling. She possesses the unique ability to manipulate luck, significantly increasing her chances of success and survival. For years, she worked as a mercenary, initially crossing paths with Cable as part of the Wild Pack. She eventually became X-Force’s second-in-command and has served on multiple iterations of the team, including those based in Utopia and the Krakoa era. Domino is incredibly dangerous, and her powers give her an exceptional advantage in surviving even the most challenging encounters.
6) Psylocke
Psylocke’s journey to becoming an anti-hero is complex. Originally, Elizabeth Braddock wasn’t one – that change happened after her mind was transferred into the body of Kwannon. While Betsy became more aggressive over time, even fighting with X-Force, she wasn’t fully an anti-hero. Eventually, Elizabeth and Kwannon switched bodies again. Now, Kwannon is the one using the Psylocke name and has fully embraced the role of an anti-hero. With a past as a deadly Hand assassin, she’s willing to kill to protect mutants. She’s an incredibly skilled and quick fighter, and though her telepathic powers aren’t as strong as someone like Emma Frost, they significantly enhance her combat abilities. She’s exceptionally resilient and deserves recognition for her rise among the ranks of anti-heroic characters.
5) Greycrow
The recent Krakoa era was a high point for the X-Men, giving many characters opportunities to stand out. One of the strongest titles from the beginning was Hellions, which really showcased the potential of the character Greycrow. Formerly a member of the Marauders with the ability to create weapons from anything, Greycrow quickly became a fan favorite. It’s surprising that the X-Men team hasn’t promoted him more, as he’s a compelling anti-hero – a character with a dark past who now uses his skills for good.
4) Magik
Magik has quickly become a fan favorite in recent years. Originally appearing with the New Mutants in the 1980s, she was a teenage mutant who became a powerful sorceress after being trapped in a dimension called Limbo. Though she once tragically died from the Legacy Virus, she was brought back to life and has since gained significant popularity. Magik is a fierce fighter, constantly struggling against the dark, demonic forces she encountered in Limbo. She’s proven that a hero doesn’t have to be perfect to be successful, becoming a key member of Cyclops’s team. She’s willing to go further than most heroes to get the job done, and her impressive abilities make her a truly dangerous opponent.
3) Bishop
Bishop originated from a bleak, dystopian future – a world ravaged by an unknown catastrophe where the X-Men had been betrayed and destroyed. In that future, a mutant police force, the XSE, fought against dangerous mutants. Accustomed to extreme violence, Bishop brought that approach with him when he traveled to the present to track down Trevor Fitzroy. He embodies the classic 1990s anti-hero: armed, brooding, and often needing restraint from his teammates to prevent him from going too far. There was a period where he turned villainous, relentlessly pursuing Cable and Hope Summers, and causing widespread casualties in a desperate attempt to prevent his grim future from happening. However, he’s since reformed and is now a reliable and respected member of the mutant community.
2) Cable
Cable practically defined the brooding anti-hero of the 1990s, paving the way for countless similar characters. He had all the hallmarks: a shadowy past, a perpetually serious expression, cybernetic enhancements, plenty of pouches and straps, and an arsenal of futuristic weapons. More of a soldier than a traditional superhero, Cable was known for his violence and origins in a bleak future. He quickly became incredibly popular and remains a huge success story from that era—only two mutants could carry their own ongoing comic series at the time, and he was one of them. In fact, he was so popular he essentially had two solo titles—Cable and X-Man, the latter featuring his alternate reality version from the Age of Apocalypse. Over time, Nathan Summers has become widely regarded as one of the most compelling mutants in the X-Men universe.
1) Wolverine
Wolverine is widely considered Marvel’s top anti-hero, and arguably the best at what he does. He wasn’t just a pioneer for mutant anti-heroes, but helped popularize the archetype in comics overall, appearing in more issues than almost any other character. Despite being tough, aggressive, and often outspoken, Wolverine has a good heart. He’s famously resilient, surviving countless battles and hardships. Remarkably, he’s been a member of three of Marvel’s most iconic teams – the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four – cementing his place as one of the most beloved superheroes ever created. If you don’t think Wolverine is the best, you haven’t been paying attention.
