7 Best PS1 RPGs That Still Hold Up Today

The original PlayStation quickly became known for its role-playing games. Game developers appreciated the extra storage space offered by the console’s disc format, and this led many talented teams to switch from working with Nintendo to Sony. Although RPGs have become much more visually and technically advanced since the PlayStation 1 days, there’s still something special about a well-made game with a retro style. These older PlayStation RPGs may not look as flashy as today’s games, but they remain incredibly enjoyable if you’re willing to give them a try.

Here are seven PlayStation role-playing games that are still worth playing today.

7) Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve was a really interesting and unique game. Square, wanting to capitalize on the popularity of Resident Evil, decided to blend survival horror with the role-playing elements they were known for in Final Fantasy. The result was a mature-rated game that pushed the PlayStation’s graphics to create a genuinely creepy and suspenseful RPG experience with challenging combat and unexpected moments. It can be hard to find now, but it’s definitely worth playing if you come across a copy.

6) Chrono Cross

It’s surprising that Chrono Trigger didn’t become a huge gaming franchise, especially considering its incredible quality and the fact that Square has released countless Final Fantasy games. Chrono Trigger is a classic, and while it did get one sequel, Chrono Cross, that’s where the series ended. Luckily, Chrono Cross is a great game, featuring unique battles, compelling characters, and a fantastic story. It’s a shame we never saw more games in the Chrono series.

5) Wild Arms

While often overlooked among PlayStation’s classic RPGs, Wild Arms offers a unique experience. It may not have the same graphical polish as Final Fantasy, but it’s full of atmosphere and style. The game’s creators expertly combined fantasy, science fiction, and Western themes to build a surprisingly cohesive and ambitious world. The Western genre is rarely seen in RPGs, and Wild Arms confidently fills that niche.

4) Xenogears

Man, the development of Xenogears was a wild ride! It started as something that was going to be Final Fantasy 7, can you believe that? Then they thought about making it a sequel to Chrono Trigger, but ultimately decided to go with something completely original. You can still definitely see hints of those other games in Xenogears, and yeah, it kinda loses steam towards the end, but honestly, it’s so incredibly ambitious that it’s easy to forgive. Seriously, even if you just want to experience that amazing soundtrack while playing, it’s worth it. And if you’re a fan of the newer Xeno games, you absolutely have to check out where it all began.

3) Final Fantasy IX

Many people would likely include Final Fantasy VII on a list like this, and that’s understandable. But with the recent remakes, a lot of fans have already experienced a newer version of that game. While the remake is beautiful and a fantastic update, I’d actually recommend FF9 instead. It was Square’s last major game for the original PlayStation, the console that really made the company famous. Plus, it’s a truly excellent RPG with memorable characters and a surprisingly good sense of humor.

2) Vagrant Story

Vagrant Story is a game people either really love or really dislike. I’m definitely in the ‘love it’ camp, but it’s not an easy game. It’s a challenging RPG that can be quite punishing. It features a very complex and ambitious combat system, and tells a more mature story, which makes it particularly enjoyable for those who played it during the original PlayStation era. Like many Square games of that time, it’s also a visually stunning game that really pushed the PlayStation to its limits.

1) Suikoden II

Suikoden II stands out as a remarkably ambitious game, but unlike many PlayStation titles, its focus wasn’t on cutting-edge graphics. Instead, the developers at Konami created over 100 characters you can recruit – and impressively, each one feels distinct and unique. This makes for one of the most memorable casts in gaming, demonstrating Konami’s skill with RPGs. Add in a complex and engaging political storyline reminiscent of high-quality television dramas, and you have a game that remains a must-play, regardless of when you experience it.
