Wonder Woman is a core figure in the DC Universe, representing truth and compassion even in difficult times. She always chooses kindness and acknowledges pain, rather than ignoring it. While she may not be as widely known as Batman or Superman, she’s just as deserving of praise. For decades, she’s been a source of inspiration for all kinds of characters, but even Wonder Woman needs help. Just like she would, we want to recognize the amazing people who support her.
Let’s explore the seven most significant supporting characters in Wonder Woman’s history. These characters all play a vital role in her journey, but we’ll determine who is most crucial by considering how much Wonder Woman’s story would be altered without them. Even those ranked lower on this list are still incredibly important – they earned their spot over many other fan favorites! So, let’s dive in and look at these key figures who have shaped Wonder Woman’s world.
7) Cassie Sandsmark

Cassie Sandsmark, also known as Wonder Girl, has repeatedly proven her value as a hero and a vital ally to Wonder Woman. She successfully brought the Wonder Girl mantle back to life after Donna Troy and helped Wonder Woman connect with a new generation of heroes. While leading teams like Young Justice and the Teen Titans, Cassie also uniquely connected Wonder Woman’s Amazonian heritage with the human world. As Wonder Woman’s first sidekick not raised on Themyscira, she was able to bridge the gap between those two worlds in a way no one else could.
6) Nubia

Nubia is a compelling character with a rich history. Initially, she was portrayed as Diana’s twin sister, kidnapped at birth by the god Ares to serve as his warrior. Later versions of her story reimagined her as the last Amazon born before the magical Well of Souls closed. Regardless of the specific storyline, Nubia and Diana always share a close bond, with Nubia consistently acting as a loyal friend and strong supporter. After Hippolyta became a goddess, Nubia became the Amazonian Queen, embodying the strength and peaceful ideals of her people. Notably, Nubia holds a special place in DC Comics history as their first black superheroine, appearing three years before Bumblebee and contributing significantly to the company’s legacy.
5) Phillipus

Phillipus is second-in-command to the Amazon leaders, first Hippolyta and then Nubia. She’s Wonder Woman’s closest advisor and mentor, having taught Diana many of the skills she needed growing up. Considered one of the Amazons’ most skilled and wise warriors, Phillipus is essential in almost every way. She’s the driving force that keeps the Amazons united and has guided their society since its founding – she’s truly the heart of Themyscira. As Hippolyta’s partner, she also served as a mother figure to Diana. Phillipus is a vital, yet often overlooked, support for all Amazons and deserves recognition for her contributions.
4) Donna Troy

Donna Troy has a famously complicated history, but that doesn’t diminish how vital she is to the DC Universe. Originally introduced as Wonder Woman’s sister or a clone raised alongside her, Donna has always been Diana’s closest confidante and first choice for backup. Diana even entrusted Donna with taking on the mantle of Wonder Woman while she was away for a year after the Infinite Crisis. Few people have Diana’s complete trust and affection. Beyond her relationship with Wonder Woman, Donna is a key founding member of both the Teen Titans and the Titans, and her story has deeply impacted both teams throughout their history.
3) Etta Candy

As a longtime Wonder Woman fan, I’ve always felt Etta Candy deserves more recognition. She’s not just a sidekick; she is a reflection of Diana’s journey. From their early days as college friends adventuring together, to Etta’s later military service which connected to Diana’s world, she’s consistently shown Diana a different perspective on being a woman in the world of men. Etta was Diana’s first female friend outside of Themyscira, and that’s huge! She’s always been a mirror, showcasing a different, but equally important, facet of femininity – and her role has beautifully evolved alongside our society. Honestly, Etta is central to what makes Wonder Woman’s message so powerful for women everywhere.
2) Steve Trevor

Steve Trevor is Wonder Woman’s main love interest and the catalyst for her becoming a superhero. When his plane crashed on Paradise Island, it dramatically altered both their lives, inspiring Diana to venture into the world of men and become Wonder Woman. Steve has consistently been a vital connection for Diana, helping her understand the outside world. He was the first person she ever saved, and remains her biggest supporter. Much like Lois Lane to Superman, Steve is always there for Diana, and often finds himself in need of rescue. Ultimately, Wonder Woman’s story wouldn’t exist as we know it without Steve Trevor.
1) Hippolyta

Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta, is arguably the most influential figure in her life, even more so than the first person Wonder Woman rescued. Hippolyta perfectly represents the power of motherhood, a quality deeply ingrained in Wonder Woman’s very being. She didn’t just give birth to her daughter; she literally created her from clay, a testament to her immense love. The goddesses then brought Diana to life. Hippolyta raised Diana to be the brave and caring warrior we admire, and as the founding queen of the Amazons, she built a society that prioritizes compassion over revenge. While Steve Trevor introduced Wonder Woman to the outside world, Hippolyta is the reason Wonder Woman exists, inspiring her daughter’s heroism and even becoming a hero herself.
