Marvel Comics frequently features rivalries between superheroes to engage readers. These conflicts range from playful competition to intense hatred. This tradition started early in Marvel’s history, as it was entertaining to pit similar heroes against each other, encouraging fans to debate who would win. Marvel often showcased both heroes’ strengths, sustaining these rivalries for years. This is particularly common with characters who share similar abilities, such as the Hulk and the Thing, or those with healing factors like Wolverine and Hulk. Sometimes, the conflicts stem from differing beliefs, as seen with Wolverine and Cyclops.
Here is a look at the seven best superhero rivalries in Marvel Comics, ranked.
7) Hulk and Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in Marvel Comics back in 1974, not in his own comic, but in The Incredible Hulk #180. He was a popular Canadian character brought in to stop Hulk whenever he wandered into Canada, and his popularity led to him becoming one of the new X-Men when the team was revamped. But this didn’t end the conflict between Wolverine and Hulk. They’ve been fighting ever since, and their incredible healing abilities mean they always survive. Their battles have been incredibly brutal – at one point, Wolverine even temporarily lobotomized Hulk by stabbing him in the brain. The rivalry has also become deeply personal, with Hulk’s family killing Wolverine’s family in the Old Man Logan storyline, and Wolverine later killing Hulk from the inside. It’s one of the most intense and violent rivalries in Marvel, and it continues to be a fan favorite.
6) Deadpool and Cable

Deadpool and Cable’s history goes way back to Deadpool’s first appearance in New Mutants #98. At the time, Cable was the leader of the New Mutants and was in the process of transforming them into X-Force – a team Deadpool had joined on several occasions. Initially, they clashed because an arms dealer named Tolliver paid Deadpool to try and kill Cable. Though he didn’t succeed, this encounter led to a complicated relationship where they’ve both fought alongside and against each other. They’re often described as frenemies, collaborating more often than not, but their interactions are always filled with playful antagonism, mostly due to Deadpool’s constant joking and Cable’s intolerance for nonsense.
5) Namor and Black Panther

Sometimes, the conflicts between heroes go beyond simple disagreement and are fueled by deep-seated hatred, like the rivalry between Black Panther and Namor. Both are strong, capable leaders – Black Panther rules Wakanda, and Namor leads Atlantis. As leaders of powerful nations, they’ve always clashed. Namor has repeatedly tried to conquer Wakanda, almost succeeding during the Avengers Vs. X-Men storyline when he wielded the Phoenix Force and flooded the nation, causing many deaths. This intense hatred even led Black Panther to end his marriage to Storm after she supported Namor.
4) Hulk and Thing

As a long-time Marvel fan, I remember when the rivalry between The Thing and Hulk first started! It goes all the way back to 1962, in Fantastic Four #12. Hulk was falsely accused of a crime, and the Fantastic Four went after him, leading to an epic showdown between Thing and Hulk. Honestly, it was amazing – these were arguably the two strongest heroes Marvel had at the time, and everyone immediately started arguing about who would win. They’ve clashed a bunch of times since then, and it’s never been definitively settled. We all know Hulk can get infinitely stronger when he’s angry, so he’d probably win eventually, but when they meet on a relatively even playing field, it’s still a really fun fight to watch!
3) Wolverine and Cyclops

The relationship between Wolverine and Cyclops is a classic example of teammates clashing due to differing beliefs. What sets their conflict apart is how often they’ve switched roles – initially, Wolverine was a ruthless fighter and Cyclops the moral center, but over time, Cyclops became more extreme and Wolverine became the voice of reason. Their rivalry was also fueled by their shared romantic interest in Jean Grey. Despite their deep-seated animosity, they ultimately continue to fight together as members of the X-Men.
2) Captain America and Iron Man

The conflict between Captain America and Iron Man provides another example of clashing beliefs within the superhero world, much like the dynamic between Wolverine and Cyclops – their stances evolved over time. During the ‘Armor Wars’ storyline, Iron Man aggressively pursued reclaiming his technology, even opposing the government, while Captain America sided with the authorities. Later, in ‘Civil War,’ their positions flipped: Captain America fought to protect the heroes’ independence, and Iron Man supported the government. The most devastating confrontation occurred when Captain America discovered Iron Man had his memories altered to conceal the threat of Incursions, leading to a brutal battle between the former allies as the world faced destruction.
1) Daredevil and Punisher

As a long-time comic and now streaming series fan, the dynamic between Daredevil and The Punisher remains one of the most compelling hero rivalries I’ve ever seen. It all boils down to their core beliefs. Daredevil, secretly lawyer Matt Murdock, truly believes in the system – in justice and the idea that the courts can work. The Punisher? He’s lost all faith. He’s seen too much corruption, watched criminals slip through the cracks and continue hurting people. He takes the law into his own hands, permanently removing villains from the streets, and that’s a line Daredevil just won’t cross. They’ve teamed up, they have a grudging respect for each other’s skills, but ultimately, they’re always at odds, each convinced their approach is the only right one. It makes for consistently gripping conflict.
