In a departure from its predecessors, which featured only Nintendo characters, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate aimed to broaden its horizons by introducing figures like Steve from Minecraft, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Cloud, Ryu, and Joker from Persona 5. By the end of its DLC, the game boasted a roster of 82 characters, making it quite extensive. However, there are certain characters that Nintendo might have considered for inclusion in the game.
7. Waluigi

There was a strong push for Waluigi to become the final character added to the roster before Sora joined the game, and it’s clear why. Unlike other characters, Waluigi doesn’t have his own game, instead appearing as a supporting role in most of his appearances. He can be found in games like Mario Kart and Mario Party, but his roles are limited compared to others.
As a gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lineup. Nearly every iconic Mario character graces this game – from the dynamic duo of Mario and Luigi, the fearsome Bowser, the jovial Donkey Kong, the energetic Diddy Kong, the celestial Rosalina, the adorable Bowser Jr., the mysterious Petey Piranha, the lovable Yoshi, the regal Daisy, to the ever-graceful Peach. It’s a dream come true for any Mario fan!
It makes sense that they had to stop adding Mario characters eventually, but it seems odd that they didn’t include Waluigi given how many other notable and even lesser-known characters are already in the game. After all, Waluigi is undeniably one of the most overlooked characters in the game.
6. Geno
Just like Waluigi, there was high anticipation that Geno could secure the final DLC position. Originating from Super Mario RPG, Geno is a less common character from the Mushroom Kingdom, but he’s widely admired by fans. It would have been satisfying to acknowledge one of the more distinctive Mario games with his inclusion too.
It’s clear that the reasoning behind this decision applies as well. With numerous Mario-related characters present in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it would have been challenging to make a strong case for adding yet another one. However, Sora was introduced several years ago, and there seemed to be no compelling reason to stop at that point. Considering the potential for increased profits, Geno could potentially have been incorporated as additional DLC characters.
5. Toon Zelda
If Link manages to have three distinct characters (Young Link, Link, and Toon Link), it follows that Princess Zelda also has her own set of variations (excluding Sheik for now, as she’s a different character). In the games where Link appears, there are corresponding versions of the princess, such as young, toon, and regular ones.
As a gamer, I would’ve loved to see the character from “Echoes of Wisdom” join the roster in “Smash Ultimate”. Unfortunately, it was released three years after the last DLC for “Smash Ultimate”, making it impractical. However, there’s a cartoon version from “The Wind Waker” and other games, and a younger version from “Ocarina of Time” that could have been an alternative choice.
4. Shadow the Hedgehog
Over time, Sonic the Hedgehog has been a long-standing adversary for Mario. However, in recent years, Sonic has made a significant impact on Nintendo consoles. All Sonic games have been ported to these platforms, and there’s even the popular Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series. Given this fact and considering that the latest Smash game was intended to bring together characters from all gaming genres, it made sense to include more Sonic characters.
Alternative characters such as Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, Knuckles (who appears as an Assist Trophy), or Silver the Hedgehog could have been chosen. However, none are as iconic and cherished as Shadow the Hedgehog, who would have made a superb inclusion. With abilities distinct from Sonic, Shadow would also have offered a unique playstyle with exclusive moves.
3. Master Chief

Video games that involve shooting have been popular in the gaming industry for quite some time now, making it seem fitting to have them better represented in “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”. Although these types of games are often meant for a more mature audience compared to most Nintendo games, including one character from such a game as a rare exception within a fighting game would not have been out of place.
Given that Call of Duty lacks a character as recognizable as Master Chief from Halo, it would have been fitting for him to be included in Smash as a long-range combatant. Master Chief is one of the most renowned video game characters, and his absence in Smash is regrettable.
2. Jonesy

About the same period, the popularity of the battle royale genre skyrocketed, coinciding with the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With its surge in the late 2010s and early 2020s, a character from Fortnite would have fit perfectly within the roster of Nintendo’s fighting game.
In light of the majority of Fortnite’s characters originating from other games, it would be prudent for Nintendo to introduce unique characters that truly shine. Among the options like Doctor Slone, Midas, and others, Jonesy is a fitting choice due to his significance since the inception of Fortnite.
1. Spyro

Spyro is another well-known video game character who’s been around on Nintendo systems for quite some time. Since his debut in the late ’90s, this purple dragon has been a fan favorite. Any genuine gaming event would have felt more complete with Spyro there. His special moves would have added variety, and instead of the usual charge attack, he could have used a move similar to Bowser’s fire breath too.
