Much like other popular superheroes, The Incredible Hulk has had his fair share of complex romantic relationships. Given his long history within Marvel Comics, it’s no surprise that he’s had a few past entanglements. In essence, the Hulk embodies the concept of smashing in multiple aspects – not just in terms of destruction or combat. When Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk and loses self-control, his intense emotions often lead him to make bold advances, which have drawn the attention of numerous women throughout the years. There’s a certain charm about the powerful green character that continues to captivate females – let’s not forget about Bruce Banner as well!
Here are seven individuals whom the Hulk has undoubtedly crushed, but unlike how he typically handles others.
1) Umar
Umar is Dormamu’s sister, much like her brother, she aims to conquer different dimensions she has access to. During the third volume of Defenders, she intended to control the Hulk. After Dormamu turned the Hulk into stone, she freed him and cast a spell to make him fall in love with her, planning to use him as her ultimate weapon to take over the Dark Dimension. However, her scheme comically backfired when she discovered that spending time together made Bruce Banner so calm that he couldn’t transform back into the Hulk. Later on, they surprisingly developed a relationship, though it was brief. Umar was the one who could keep Hulk composed enough to avoid destroying the world. They fought against Mindless Ones during the day and spent romantic moments at night until she sent him back to Earth when she realized he still had feelings for Betty Ross.
2) Zarda
In a fresh and conversational manner: Power Princess Zarda serves as Marvel’s counterpart to Wonder Woman, with an edge; while Wonder Woman is known for her boundless empathy, Zarda swaps this for a determined, no-nonsense approach. Contrasting the usual version of The Hulk, Ultimate Universe’s Hulk was less restrained and, well, rather amorous. In the first issue of the Ultimate Hulk Annual comic, these two clashed, but instead of the expected violence and mayhem that the Ultimate Universe is known for, it resulted in a surprising display of domesticity. Zarda purchased Hulk some essential garments, and they engaged in a sweet squabble about breakfast. By story’s end, Zarda had to depart for the Ultimates, but she inquired if Hulk desired any further activities with her. The enthusiasm on his face spoke volumes about the adventures the powerful pair might have shared afterward.
3) Nadia Blonsky
Nadia Blonsky is married to Emil Blonsky, often referred to as one of the Hulk’s toughest adversaries, the Abomination. Initially assigned to win over Bruce Banner (the Hulk), she instead found herself drawn to him due to his calm and considerate demeanor during transformations, contrasting her husband’s constant violent behavior. The feelings were mutual, and they embarked on a passionate relationship that was surprisingly beneficial for both parties.
Bruce Banner was still grieving the loss of Betty Ross at this time, but he appeared to find solace in Nadia. They seemed to help each other heal as their bond grew stronger. However, their potential future together was tragically cut short when Nadia passed away in issue #76 of Incredible Hulk volume two.
4) Monica Rappaccini
In the primary universe, Monica functions as an adversary to the Hulk, as she is an A.I.M. scientist who stole Bruce Banner’s research and used it to win a Nobel Prize. However, during the House of M event, an alternate reality was created by Scarlet Witch, where Monica and Bruce were in a relationship. This world is now known as Earth-58163. In this world, the Hulk rose to lead Australia and fought alongside Monica in the mutant/human war, both on the battlefield and in their personal lives. While we’ve never seen them together in the main universe, this alternate reality suggests that they could have a strong connection, with Monica successfully navigating between Bruce and the Hulk’s distinct personalities.
5) Jarella
Among the Hulk’s most significant romantic interests is Jarella, who stands out as his smallest companion. Originally, she was the royal princess of planet K’Ai in the quantum realm, and their first encounter occurred when the Hulk was miniaturized by the antagonist Psyklop during Incredible Hulk issue #140. Remarkably, they quickly established a long-lasting bond, something neither the Hulk nor Bruce Banner had managed with anyone else before. The Hulk often shrank himself to visit her, and eventually brought Jarella from her realm into the normal world. Their relationship flourished, but unfortunately, it was cut short by Jarella’s premature demise.
6) Caiera
In the tale of Planet Hulk, Caiera Oldstrong initially crossed paths with the Jade Giant. Despite starting off as adversaries, Hulk’s transformation into a benevolent ruler and his growing respect among followers gradually won over Caiera. Love blossomed between them, reciprocated in kind by Caiera. In their first intimate moment, she managed to persuade him to reveal his true identity as Bruce Banner, an act he hadn’t performed since arriving at the gladiator-like planet. Their love was profound and their marriage beautiful, but tragically short-lived, leading to the World War Hulk storyline. Fortunately, their son Skaar lived on. During their all-too-brief union, Caiera brought out a tranquility in Bruce rarely seen, while also possessing the strength to keep the Hulk in check when needed. She was indeed the ideal match for the Hulk, and it’d be delightful to see them reunite someday in the future.
7) Betty Ross
It goes without saying that the list wouldn’t be whole without the original love interest of The Incredible Hulk – Betty Ross. You may not require me to remind you that Betty and Bruce Banner have shared an intimate relationship, one that might just outnumber any other pair on this list. Throughout the years, their bond has been marked by a rollercoaster ride of love, conflict, and reconciliation. They’re like those couples who experience phases of wanting space, only to rediscover their deep affection for each other and reunite. Betty has demonstrated not just her love for Bruce, but for each of his personas as well. Their relationship is one of Marvel’s longest-standing, a connection that, no matter how often they are separated, always seems to find its way back to each other.
