Creating a successful comedy show is surprisingly difficult. It seems like a simple formula – interesting characters in funny situations – but it’s actually one of the toughest feats in entertainment. Even hugely popular shows like The Office have struggled. Many viewers skip the first season because it’s awkward and hasn’t found its footing, and the final season is often criticized for having characters behave inconsistently just to move the story along.
I’ve noticed that a lot of comedies need time to really hit their stride, so when one comes along that’s hilarious right from the beginning and stays that way, it’s something special! That’s why I’m so excited to share seven comedy series that were absolutely perfect, start to finish.
7) Schitt’s Creek

One of the great things about comedies is their ability to connect with everyone. The show Schitt’s Creek tells the story of the Rose family, who unexpectedly lose all their money and are forced to start over in a small town. Though the premise might seem similar to a heartwarming Hallmark movie, the show quickly establishes its unique comedic voice thanks to memorable characters like Johnny and David Rose, and their witty dialogue. Schitt’s Creek consistently delivers laughs while also exploring the heartfelt story of a family rebuilding their lives.
6) New Girl

Most comedies focus on romantic relationships, but New Girl stands out by centering on friendship. The show starts with Jessica Day going through a tough time and needing support, which she finds in three male roommates who remain true to themselves. Over six seasons, they develop a unique and heartwarming bond, and while romantic storylines emerge, they feel natural and earned. Plus, New Girl boasts one of the most memorable characters on television in recent years: Schmidt.
5) 30 Rock

A lot of people feel like Saturday Night Live hasn’t been good lately, so a show about making a comedy show might not seem interesting. But 30 Rock is different – it gives you a realistic look behind the scenes in the entertainment world. It’s not always glamorous, and that’s where the humor comes in, as Liz Lemon just tries to keep everything running smoothly. Plus, 30 Rock keeps things fresh with appearances from well-known actors.
4) Seinfeld

It would be tough to market a show about ‘nothing’ now, but in the 1990s, shows focusing on everyday life were incredibly popular – that’s how Seinfeld first gained a following. Even now, the show remains funny and relatable, with Jerry and his friends’ misadventures still entertaining audiences. Seinfeld has so many classic episodes that you’re guaranteed to find something hilarious in every binge-watching session, leaving you eager to watch more.
3) Atlanta

Donald Glover is known for his comedy, including the show Community, which could have easily made this list if not for production issues in its fourth season. Thankfully, he keeps things running smoothly in Atlanta, a hilarious series that throws its characters into wildly unexpected scenarios. What makes Atlanta so enjoyable is its unpredictability – you might see Earn and Vanessa at dinner one moment, and Darius in a bizarre confrontation the next. Though it’s not as long-running as some other shows, Atlanta makes every moment count.
2) How I Met Your Mother

It’s impossible to talk about How I Met Your Mother without mentioning its controversial ending. However, this show truly proves the saying, “It’s the journey, not the destination.” Watching Ted Mosby and his friends experience life in New York City is consistently entertaining, as each character follows their own path. The show balances humor with genuine emotion, delivering plenty of moving moments. While not everyone loved how it ended, How I Met Your Mother deserves to be appreciated for the overall experience it provides.
1) Barry

Bill Hader is a hugely talented comedian, and a real highlight of Saturday Night Live in recent years. So, it’s no surprise that his own show, Barry, is a massive success. The series centers on a hitman who unexpectedly decides he wants to become an actor – a career change his employers aren’t thrilled about. Barry, the main character, is deeply troubled and often struggles to control his temper. As the show progresses, it gets quite dark, but the story earns its dramatic turns through careful writing and character development.
