Wolverine is famously grumpy, and he’s shown that side of himself many times throughout his history in Marvel Comics. Originally a rough and solitary character, he’s become more like a tough but caring uncle figure to the other mutants. He’s often disagreed with other heroes, leading to several fights over the years. Now, he’s generally considered a close friend to most, who appreciate his dry wit and quiet nature. They know that when the chips are down, he’s the best ally you could ask for – he truly is the best at what he does.
Wolverine has a long history of great battles with many Marvel heroes. While some of these fights are famous, others are less well-known but still worth reading. Here are seven comics featuring fantastic battles between Wolverine and his fellow Marvel characters.
7) Cyclops — X-Men: Schism #4-5
Wolverine and Cyclops had a long-standing disagreement, but it rarely escalated into a physical fight. That changed with issues #4 and #5 of X-Men: Schism, created by Jason Aaron, Alan Davis, and Adam Kubert. The conflict finally exploded when Cyclops instructed Temper (formerly Oya) to kill several Hellfire Club members to protect a museum of humans. Logan was furious that a child was being used as a weapon, and a fierce fight broke out. The battle, depicted over those two issues, was incredibly violent. Although they eventually joined forces against a powerful new Sentinel, the fight permanently damaged their friendship.
6) Hank Pym — Avengers vs. X-Men #4
Hank Pym is a significant hero in the Marvel Universe, though he’s not as well-known as some others. He and Wolverine haven’t fought often, and when they do, their battles are usually brief. During the Avengers vs. X-Men event, which centered around the Phoenix Force, Wolverine sided with the Avengers. A highly anticipated fight in Avengers vs. X-Men #4, created by Ed Brubaker and John Romita Jr., promised a showdown between Wolverine and Captain America over the fate of Hope Summers, and it delivered a fierce battle. Wolverine initially gained the upper hand, but Pym unexpectedly attacked him. Captain America followed up, and then Pym ultimately kicked Wolverine off their Quinjet.
5) Gambit — Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #277
Gambit is a well-known mutant whose beginnings with the X-Men were marked by conflict. He frequently argued with other members, particularly Wolverine, culminating in a memorable fight in Uncanny X-Men #277, created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. While battling the Warskrulls on the Shi’Ar Empire’s home planet, Logan and Remy fought because Wolverine didn’t trust Gambit. Surprisingly, Gambit won the encounter, cleverly defeating the Canadian mutant. Wolverine eventually got his revenge a few issues later, but this initial loss was a shock to many fans.
4) Captain America — Captain America (Vol. 1) #404
Captain America has been part of some strange adventures – even his early comics were called Captain America’s Weird Tales. But the story “Man and Wolf” is particularly odd. Published in the 1990s by Mark Gruenwald and Rik Levins, it transformed Captain America into a werewolf-like creature called Capwolf, and featured appearances by the popular characters Wolverine and Cable, likely to increase sales. In Captain America #404, Capwolf actually fought and defeated Wolverine. While the two heroes have battled a few times, this encounter stands out as the most unusual.
3) Shang-Chi: X-Men (Vol. 2) #61
Shang-Chi is now known as one of the Marvel Universe’s best martial artists, especially after appearing in the MCU. But he wasn’t always portrayed as an unstoppable fighter. In X-Men (Vol. 2) #62, Shang-Chi suffered a significant defeat at the hands of Wolverine. While investigating a common enemy, the two heroes clashed, and Wolverine – without his adamantium skeleton at the time – decisively won a three-page fight against the Master of Kung-Fu. Though Shang-Chi would win their future encounters, he was thoroughly beaten in this particular match.
2) Spider-Man: Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine #1-6
Jason Aaron and Adam Kubert’s Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine (issues #1-6) is a fantastic story that any fan of either character will enjoy. The series throws Spider-Man and Wolverine through time, causing them to fight repeatedly, with Wolverine usually winning. These battles are visually stunning, thanks to artist Adam Kubert, and ultimately lead the two heroes to become close friends with a deeper understanding of each other.
1) Hulk — World War Hulk: X-Men #2
Hulk and Wolverine have clashed in many memorable battles over the years. While many fans remember their fight in The Incredible Hulk #340, a less-celebrated but equally impressive fight occurred in World War Hulk: X-Men #2, written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Andrea Di Vito. In that issue, after Hulk arrived at the X-Mansion seeking revenge on Professor X, Wolverine stepped up to fight. However, Hulk easily overpowered Wolverine, delivering a visually stunning and entertaining defeat thanks to Di Vito’s artwork.
