As a DC fan, I’ve always been amazed by how they evolved. For years, they were known for those classic, really colorful superhero adventures. But then, in the ’80s, things started to change with creators like Alan Moore coming on board. They really brought a new level of depth and, honestly, darkness to the DC universe. It wasn’t just about good versus evil anymore. Over time, that darkness spread to more and more of their comics. Now, you see so many DC characters dealing with incredibly mature themes and facing truly horrifying situations – stuff that’s a whole lot different than what Superman typically deals with!
The new DC Universe (DCU) is now allowing for more mature, R-rated projects, like the shows Creature Commandos and Peacemaker. This is great news because it opens the door for many DC characters to appear in movies and TV shows that better suit their darker stories. Here are seven DC characters who would be perfect for R-rated adaptations, and fans are hoping to see them get that treatment.
7) The Sandman I

As a huge movie fan, I always felt The Sandman was a bit different from your typical superhero. He actually felt more at home with those classic, gritty pulp detectives from the 1930s. Think about Wesley Dodds – a guy using a gas gun and his smarts to solve really dark murders in old New York City. The ‘Sandman Mystery Theatre’ comic from the ’90s – one of DC’s best, honestly – really leaned into that darkness. It was violent, scary, and showed a truly grim side of the city. That story would make for an incredible R-rated movie, though a TV series could really do it justice. A Sandman project within the DCU could take us to places that are seriously unsettling, and I’m here for it.
6) Black Adam

Black Adam recently starred in a movie, but it wasn’t a success. Despite that, there’s still potential for a better, more mature take on the character. Black Adam is a compelling figure, and his brutal origin story in ancient Khandaq would be perfect for an R-rated film. Showing both his past and present adventures, and embracing his violent nature, would be a much better fit than trying to make him a traditional hero. DC missed the mark by softening the character; Black Adam thrives as a ruthless anti-hero. Giving him an R-rated movie would allow him to truly shine within the DC Universe.
5) Crazy Jane

Okay, let me tell you about a character who deserves a movie – Crazy Jane from the Doom Patrol. This team is already fantastic, but Jane? She’s something special. Her backstory is incredibly dark – a truly horrific childhood of abuse led to Dissociative Identity Disorder. Then, thrown into the mix, an alien explosion gives her superpowers! It’s a setup ripe for a really compelling, R-rated horror-superhero film. Imagine diving into the complexities of her multiple personalities and powers – it could be genuinely terrifying and deeply moving. Honestly, a solo movie for Jane isn’t just a good idea, it’s a must-see. She’s a character with so much potential to explore the darker corners of the superhero world.
4) Wild Dog

I’ve always had a soft spot for Wild Dog – he was DC’s take on that gritty vigilante archetype, and I think he’s fantastic. I kept hoping to see him pop up in Peacemaker, but now that show’s finished, I’d love to see him get his own R-rated movie. The story is simple: after his sister was tragically killed, he donned a hockey mask, grabbed some serious firepower, and used his military skills to take down criminals. What I always liked is that, unlike some of these characters, Wild Dog has a sense of humor! I really think he could carry an amazing, over-the-top action comedy, and honestly, it’s time this D-list hero got the recognition he deserves. A Wild Dog movie would be huge!
3) Mr. E

Mr. E is a fascinating and largely unknown character in the DC universe. He had a difficult childhood, raised by a strict and abusive father who trained him to eliminate anything supernatural. He became a powerful magic user, traveling the world to hunt and destroy dangerous monsters in order to protect people. He was known for his relentless dedication to his mission. A movie about Mr. E would feature him brutally and efficiently taking down creatures like vampires and werewolves, all while grappling with his own deep emotional scars. It would be a darkly thrilling and violent film, showcasing a gritty, R-rated side of the DC Comics world.
2) Swamp Thing

Everyone anticipates Swamp Thing’s arrival in the DC Universe. He’s a cornerstone of DC Comics, largely responsible for the company’s shift towards more adult and complex narratives. He’s a beloved character for any DC fan. To truly set the DCU apart from Marvel and ensure success, a Swamp Thing movie needs to be a hard R-rated horror film. Adapting one of Alan Moore’s iconic stories would be incredible and fully realize the character’s potential.
1) John Constantine

DC Comics has some fantastic horror characters, and John Constantine is arguably the best. Like his counterpart from the Louisiana swamps, he’s expected to appear in the DC Universe eventually, and he deserves his own gritty, R-rated movie. Constantine, a British magician known for his rough language and habits, thrives in dark and realistic settings, and that’s exactly what an R-rated film would provide. It’s the right fit for the character and what fans want to see. While Keanu Reeves played Constantine well, we’re ready for a version that stays true to the comics, and an R-rating would allow for the character to truly shine.
