The Avengers are Earth-616’s primary line of defense against major threats. While groups like the Fantastic Four, mutant teams, and agencies like SHIELD exist, it’s the Avengers who are called upon when the world faces invasions or interdimensional conquerors. They’ve consistently handled the planet’s biggest crises, acting as its protectors. This responsibility has forced them to make difficult decisions, and sometimes, they’ve had to keep information secret from the public.
As a huge fan of the Avengers, I’ve always been fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes. It’s clear they’ve held back information, not just to save the world, but sometimes to protect themselves and the people they care about. I’ve been digging, and I’ve found seven of the most closely guarded secrets the Avengers have ever kept – secrets that, if they ever came out, would cause major problems, to say the least.
7) The Celestials Place in Creating Humanity

Jason Aaron’s run on Avengers (Vol. 8) started with a huge revelation about Earth’s history. The Avengers discovered a dead Celestial being buried on Earth, infected by a parasitic alien race called the Horde. These parasites, altered by being inside the Celestial, spread across the planet and ultimately spurred the evolution of early life, including the ancestors of humanity. While people had long suspected the Celestials were involved in humanity’s origins, no one realized it stemmed from a diseased, parasitic source. The Avengers kept this shocking truth hidden, preventing a global crisis.
6) The Truth About Scarlet Witch’s Kids

The romance between Scarlet Witch and Vision was unexpected, but quickly became a fan favorite. They got married and eventually had children, despite it being magically impossible. Wanda used her powers to create them, unknowingly using pieces of Mephisto’s soul in the process. Tragically, those children were later lost, and the Avengers erased Wanda’s memory of them. This eventually led to her discovering the truth, causing her to lose control and nearly destroy the Avengers, as well as committing genocide against mutants in the House of M storyline.
5) Planet X

The first volume of Uncanny Avengers featured the Avengers Unity Squad battling the Apocalypse Twins, the children of Archangel. Raised by Kang, these twins had mastered time manipulation and exploited the existing tensions between mutants and humans on the team. They used Scarlet Witch’s magic to send all mutants to a place called the Ark, then tricked a Celestial being into destroying Earth. The mutants then built a new society on Planet X. Havok and the Wasp traveled back in time in the storyline “Avenge the Earth” to prevent the destruction, successfully saving the world. However, they decided to keep the fact that mutants had originally destroyed the planet a secret, fearing it would worsen the already difficult situation for mutantkind.
4) The Skrulls Replacing Heroes and Villains

The early 2000s were a high point for Marvel Comics, and the Secret Invasion storyline was one of its biggest successes. The seeds for this story were planted in New Avengers, where, in issues #27-30, the team discovered the extent of a looming threat. After the events of Civil War, they had gone into hiding and were sent to Japan to rescue Echo from the Hand ninja clan. Elektra had taken over the Hand, and a difficult battle ensued. Echo managed to defeat Elektra, but then a shocking revelation occurred: she was revealed to be a Skrull, a shape-shifting alien. This discovery shocked the team and created widespread suspicion about how deeply the Skrulls had infiltrated them, leading them to keep the information secret. Meanwhile, Spider-Woman, secretly the Skrull Empress Veranke, took Elektra’s body to Iron Man’s Avengers team, who also kept it quiet. When the Skrulls finally launched their attack, the world was unprepared, and the Avengers’ secrecy and paranoia actually hindered their ability to respond effectively to the invasion.
3) Norman Osborn’s Deal With the Void

Following the events of Civil War, Norman Osborn took control of national superhero security after proving himself during the Skrull invasion. This led to a period called “Dark Reign,” where he assembled his own team of Avengers, largely composed of villains, keeping Ares and the Sentry from the previous team. Osborn secretly made a dangerous deal with the Void – a dark, powerful entity connected to the Sentry – to act as his enforcer. In exchange, Osborn would keep the Void’s control over the team’s strongest member hidden. The Void always obeyed Osborn, and no one suspected their arrangement. Though this secret ultimately led to Osborn’s downfall, it made him incredibly powerful and dangerous for a while.
2) The Illuminati Mindwiping Captain America

Jonathan Hickman’s run on Avengers was highly acclaimed, and he surprised everyone by adding Captain America to the Illuminati. The group recruited him to serve as their conscience, hoping he’d guide them towards ethical solutions, especially when they discovered the threat of Incursions – colliding Earths. Captain America initially stopped the first Incursion using the Infinity Gauntlet, but the Gauntlet was subsequently destroyed, forcing the Illuminati to consider more drastic measures. When Captain America opposed their increasingly extreme plans, they erased his memory. They successfully kept this secret until the events of Original Sin, which revealed their actions and ultimately led the Avengers to investigate and confront the Illuminati.
1) The Incursions

The Illuminati erasing Captain America’s memory was just the first step in their cover-up of the Incursions. Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Black Panther, Black Bolt, Namor, and the Beast all deliberately kept the truth hidden – not just from the public, but from their fellow heroes in the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and SHIELD. Predictably, Doctor Doom was the only one who figured it out. When the truth was finally revealed after the Original Sin event, it shattered the Avengers. The frustrating part is that they might have been able to solve the problem if they had simply asked for help from their allies – or even their enemies. Instead, they made a world-altering decision in secret, ultimately leading to near-total destruction and leaving Doctor Doom to salvage what remained of the multiverse.
