7 DC Characters The Movies Completely Wasted

DC Comics characters have a long history of being brought to life on screen. Because these characters are so well-known and beloved, fans have high hopes for their movie adaptations. Over the years, several DC films have been important in shaping the superhero genre, and many have successfully captured the essence of their source material. However, not every adaptation is a hit. Sadly, the disappointing ones often stick in people’s minds just as strongly as the successful ones.

While DC Comics has inspired some fantastic movies, they don’t always capture the essence of the characters. Too often, a beloved DC hero or villain is underused or misrepresented, either because the filmmakers didn’t understand what made them popular, or because plans for future storylines fell through. It’s frustrating to see so much potential go to waste when it comes to these iconic figures.

7) Darkseid

DC movies have disappointed fans with how they’ve handled some Superman-related characters, and Darkseid is a particularly frustrating case. He appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, hinting at a major role as the villain in future films planned by Snyder. Unfortunately, those plans were canceled, and with the end of the DCEU, all the potential Snyder had for Darkseid’s story was lost.

6) Parallax

Many DC Comics fans point to Parallax as a villain who was badly done in the movies. He appeared in the 2011 film Green Lantern, but only for a short time near the end, and was quickly defeated by Hal Jordan. The movie’s version of Parallax didn’t capture the character’s immense power or significance from the comics, making it a disappointing portrayal.

5) Supergirl

Supergirl hasn’t had a strong presence in film, despite an upcoming appearance in a new Supergirl movie within the DCU. Previous attempts, like a poorly received 1980s solo film, haven’t done her justice. While Sasha Calle’s portrayal in The Flash was excellent and the character design was strong, her version of Supergirl ultimately felt underused. Not only was the character killed off multiple times within the film, but the cancellation of the DCEU meant any future potential for Calle’s Supergirl was lost.

4) Robin

Robin is one of DC’s most recognizable heroes, having been a key part of Batman’s world for decades. However, movie adaptations haven’t done the character justice. The only time Robin appeared in a live-action film was in Joel Schumacher’s 1990s Batman movies, which weren’t well-received. More recent Batman films have alluded to Robin but haven’t given him a substantial role, a missed opportunity for such a great young hero.

3) Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter is a surprisingly overlooked hero in the DC universe, especially when it comes to movies. He often appears weaker on screen than in the comics, and his potential has rarely been fully utilized. While he had a promising introduction in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, hinting at a larger role to come, those plans never materialized, leaving fans disappointed and the character’s cinematic promise unfulfilled.

2) Cyborg

Cyborg is a DC character who deserves more recognition, but his potential was wasted in the Justice League movie. While Ray Fisher was well-suited for the role, the film focused more on other heroes, giving Cyborg a limited part. Sadly, due to the struggles of the DC Extended Universe, Fisher never had a chance to showcase what Cyborg could really do, despite his obvious promise.

1) Batgirl

Lots of superhero movies get cancelled, but it’s rare for one to be scrapped so close to release. The cancellation of the Batgirl movie was particularly disappointing, as the character has often been poorly treated in DC films. Her only significant live-action role was in the 1997 movie Batman & Robin, which wasn’t a great portrayal. Having her chance at a solo film taken away feels like a major setback, especially considering how much potential Batgirl has.
