7 DC Characters Who Died & Came Back Way More Powerful

For decades, DC Comics has captivated superhero fans with imaginative stories. To stay relevant, the publisher has constantly evolved its approach. Early comics were often simple but surprisingly violent. Later, they embraced a quirky, science fiction-focused, and lighthearted style. More recently, DC comics have become grittier and more violent, leading to a higher body count. And with more characters dying, it’s become common to see them brought back to life – a lot of resurrections!

As a moviegoer, I’ve noticed a common trope: characters dying and coming back… stronger. It’s almost a rule! Whether it’s a hero or a villain, a brush with death often unlocks a new level of power. I’ve been thinking about this, and here are seven DC characters who definitely returned from the brink with a serious upgrade to their abilities. They weren’t just back – they were better than before they faced their final moments.

7) Wonder Woman

I’ve always been a huge Wonder Woman fan, and it’s amazing to see how much her story has evolved over the years. She’s truly become a legendary superhero! But there was one period I really don’t like to think about – the run by John Byrne. Honestly, it’s considered one of the weakest in Wonder Woman’s history. During that time, they actually killed her off! She woke up as a goddess in Olympus, becoming the Goddess of Truth, which was a massive power boost. It led to her mother, Hippolyta, temporarily taking on the Wonder Woman mantle because Diana couldn’t leave Olympus. Thankfully, it didn’t last, and most fans, like me, just try to forget that whole storyline ever happened. It’s just… not a great part of her history, and we’re all eager to move past it!

6) Reverse Flash

Reverse Flash, originally a fan from the future, became Barry Allen’s most dangerous enemy, his admiration twisting into a deadly obsession. Barry ultimately killed him, ending his life before he could harm another loved one. However, Eobard Thawne remained dead for only a short time, eventually returning in The Flash: Rebirth. It was later revealed that this resurrected Thawne – brought back to life during the Blackest Night event, which followed The Flash: Rebirth, and then traveling back in time – was now powered by the Negative Speed Force. This dark energy was the opposite of the Speed Force and granted him even greater abilities, including effortless time travel and the power to alter history, even reducing other speedsters to dust. With these new powers, Reverse Flash reclaimed his position as the Flash’s ultimate adversary.

5) Sinestro

Sinestro is arguably the most famous enemy of the Green Lanterns, and his story took a dark turn in “Emerald Twilight” where he seemingly died. He was later brought back into the Green Lantern Corps to fight Hal Jordan, who was controlled by the entity Parallax, but was killed in battle. However, Sinestro wasn’t gone for long. He eventually returned to life and formed his own group, the Sinestro Corps, gaining the ability to use the power of Parallax himself. After his resurrection, Sinestro’s control over fear – and the yellow energy it creates – was stronger than ever. He even briefly became the host of the Life Entity, a feat unimaginable before his death. Ultimately, Sinestro became more powerful and a central figure in the larger Green Lantern story.

4) Darkseid

Darkseid is a supremely powerful and destructive force, essentially the embodiment of evil across the entire multiverse. Over time, he’s become even more powerful, and surprisingly, some of his biggest gains came after experiencing death. Specifically, in DC All-In #1, Darkseid built a device called the Miracle Machine. By powering it with his family’s blood, he was granted a single wish: control over the Spectre. Though the Justice League ultimately defeated him, his death didn’t end him. Instead, he transformed into Omega energy, spreading his essence throughout the universe and becoming part of everything. He also seized control of Alpha Earth, a world he reshaped to reflect his own twisted vision. Now, Darkseid is a true god, capable of manipulating reality itself.

3) Doomsday

You know, when I first heard about Doomsday, I thought Superman’s death was the biggest shock. But it turned out that was just the start of his story! He wasn’t just a monster; he was a weapon made by the Kryptonians to wipe out planets. He was unbelievably strong and tough, of course, but his real power was terrifying. Every time you killed him, he’d come back, stronger and immune to whatever took him down before. It was like he learned from dying! And it gets crazier – he’s actually become the Time Trapper, controlling time itself, and all that power comes from all the times he’s been killed. The really mind-blowing part? He actually asked Superman to kill him one last time, wanting to become a god. It just shows you how much power death can actually give him.

2) Barry Allen

Barry Allen, the second hero to take on the name Flash, became a central figure among Earth’s heroes. He was known as a classic, straightforward good guy – a strong believer in both science and doing what’s right, though sometimes a bit unremarkable. After defeating his archenemy, Reverse Flash, Barry journeyed to the future to reunite with his wife, Iris, who had seemingly disappeared but was actually living in the 30th century. However, he was soon drawn back into action by a cosmic threat, the Anti-Monitor, and imprisoned on the planet Qward. In a selfless act, Barry sacrificed his life to disable a powerful weapon created by Qward, and remained deceased for many years. When he eventually returned, he was significantly more powerful, his body now radiating energy from the Speed Force. He could finally exceed the speed of light and possessed abilities he’d never had before, thanks to the advancements in understanding the Speed Force made by other speedsters during his absence.

1) Hal Jordan

Hal Jordan was once considered the best Green Lantern, but he was later taken over by a being of pure fear called Parallax. This made him incredibly powerful, but at the cost of his own goodness. Driven by Parallax, he destroyed the entire Green Lantern Corps and attempted to rebuild the universe in his own image, though he wasn’t successful, and was ultimately defeated by his friend Oliver Queen. Later, when the sun went out, Hal sacrificed himself to restore it. After a few years, he was chosen to become the Spectre, a being with almost unlimited power, but he was eventually brought back to life and returned to his role as a Green Lantern.
