DC Comics is starting the new year strong! 2026 looks set to be a huge year for the DC Universe, with storylines like DC K.O. wrapping up and the beginning of DC Next Level. While it’s early days, January got off to a great start after a quiet final week of December. DC delivered a thrilling return with several exciting new issues.
As a big DC Comics fan, I was thrilled to see so many of my favorite series released on January 7th, 2026! Titles like Batman, Absolute Superman, and Adventures of Superman: The Book of El were packed with exciting moments and new developments. From the Justice League being completely taken by surprise to Absolute Superman’s dangerous encounter with his world’s Hawkman, there was a lot to enjoy. If you didn’t get a chance to read this week’s issues, you might have missed out – so check out the highlights below!
7. The Justice League is Robbed

The six-issue miniseries Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League ended this week, leaving the titular team in a tough spot. They managed to steal the Power Bank, but then faced Black Adam and a group of supervillains. However, this was all intentional – the Power Bank wasn’t their real target. Their goal was actually the valuable contents of the Justice League’s trophy room. During the confusion, Cheshire and Cheetah’s crew successfully stole every item from the Watchtower, with some relics worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
6. DC Debuts a New Green Lantern

The final chapter of Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s Superman run, Adventures of Superman: Book of El, delivers an exciting showdown. Superman and his future family are struggling against Clark Kent’s enemy, Kryl-Ux, who tries to steal a powerful artifact called the Dark Star Ring (also known as the Will of Olgrun) from Rowan Kent, the protector of Lanternholm. Though Rowan loses the Dark Star Ring in a battle with Kryl-Ux’s weapon, her incredible strength of will impresses the universe enough to earn her a true Power Ring, making her the first Green Lantern in a long time. Even though it’s set in a possible future, it’s a truly inspiring scene.
5. Absolute Hawkman Challenges Superman

The latest issue of Absolute Superman, #15, marks a new beginning for DC’s Superman. Having defeated Ra’s al Ghul and the Lazarus Pit, he’s now openly working as a hero, inspiring positive change through acts of kindness and bravery. But not everyone welcomes this new approach. The issue ends with a confrontation between Superman and Absolute Hawkman, a loyal member of the Justice League who disapproves of Superman’s efforts to shake things up. Considering Hawkman’s history – he previously defeated Green Arrow – trouble is brewing for the Man of Steel.
4. Absolute Obsidian Debuts

Hector Hammond has been secretly planning for a long time to control and benefit from the terrifying power of Absolute Green Lantern. In the 10th issue of the series, his plan comes to fruition. He’s used a local man named Todd Rice as an experiment, covering him in a substance similar to the one used on Hal Jordan by Black Hand. This transformation turns Rice into a monstrous being, stripping away his humanity. Hammond is pleased with this result, as he now has a powerful weapon to use against the Absolute Green Lantern, Jo Mullein.
3. DC Introduces Alfred Wayne

Okay, so in the latest issue of DC K.O.: Knightfight #3, Batman’s still on this incredibly strange quest to reach the Heart of Apokolips. It’s gotten even more twisted! After he refused to fight simulations of his past Robins, the Heart decided to change tactics. Instead of sending him against a grown-up Damian, it’s created a reality where Damian succeeded – he’s saved Gotham, wiped out all crime, and even has a family with a son named Alfred! Now Batman is facing an impossible choice – what he wants versus protecting this new life Damian has built. It’s a really compelling setup and throws Batman for a serious loop.
2. Batman’s Identity is Revealed to His Date

In a recent issue of Batman, Bruce Wayne attempted to build a relationship with Dr. Annika Zeller by taking her on a date. However, their evening was interrupted by a motorcycle gang and a dangerous assassin called the Ojo. Bruce managed to protect Annika, and Robin eventually drove the Ojo away. Throughout the date, Damian Wayne repeatedly called Batman ‘Father’ instead of Bruce, and Annika overheard this. This creates a difficult situation: is it worse to keep Annika unaware that Bruce has a son, or to risk her learning Batman’s secret identity when Bruce isn’t sure if he can trust her?
1. Absolute Deathstroke Debuts

This month’s issue of Absolute Batman: Ark M Special #1 offers a fascinating look into the Joker’s history with Dr. Amadeus Arkham and Arkham Asylum. While the story primarily focuses on the past, it also features a modern-day plotline where Jack Grimm V is plotting to destroy Batman by unleashing monstrous creatures on Gotham City. However, the Joker’s most dangerous asset is actually Deathstroke from the Absolute Universe, whom he’s holding back to strike against Batman at the perfect moment.
