7 Disastrous Decisions the X-Men Regret to This Day

The X-Men face immense pressure. They constantly fight to protect a world that distrusts and fears them, battling prejudice from both humans and mutants, as well as a wide range of supervillains. They deal with everything from world-ending crises to smaller, local threats. As leaders and role models for the entire mutant community, their decisions carry enormous weight. Because they often act on behalf of all mutants, every choice they make is incredibly risky. Making important decisions for a large group is always difficult, but the X-Men operate on a scale where even small mistakes could have disastrous consequences.

The X-Men have had both successes and failures in their efforts to help mutants. Some of their choices have been disastrous, and many team members likely regret them. Here are seven of the worst decisions the X-Men ever made, and how those choices brought hardship to mutantkind.

7) Listening to Emma Frost in Inhumans vs X-Men

The attempt to promote the Inhumans was a failure, both within the story and with audiences, culminating in the ‘Inhumans vs. X-Men’ event. This conflict began with ‘Death of X’, which revealed Cyclops had died from the M-Pox virus. Emma Frost, using a psychic copy of Cyclops, retaliated against the Inhumans, leading to a full-scale war. Driven by grief, Frost ultimately planned to wipe out the Inhumans using reprogrammed Sentinels, nearly tricking the X-Men into committing genocide – a disastrous outcome she narrowly failed to achieve.

6) Not Finding Out Cassandra Nova Had Taken Over Xavier’s Body Sooner

Let me tell you, Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run is a total game-changer, and it all kicks off with a villain for the ages: Cassandra Nova. Seriously, she’s fantastic. The story starts with “E Is for Extinction,” and the sheer audacity of her plan—taking over Professor X’s body—is brilliant. Before that, she manipulated Beak into a brutal attack that put Beast in a coma, then caused massive problems in the Shi’Ar Empire. Ultimately, she came back to Earth with the goal of wiping out the X-Men. What’s really frustrating—and makes the story so compelling—is that Charles Xavier tried to warn his team that something was terribly wrong. They just didn’t put the pieces together fast enough! The X-Men completely failed to realize their mentor was being controlled, and honestly, they could have prevented a lot of devastation in the Shi’Ar Empire if they’d been a little quicker to figure out Nova’s scheme. It’s a really gripping storyline, and Nova is a truly memorable villain.

5) Xavier Enslaving the Danger Room

For years, the Danger Room has been used to train the X-Men. When Professor X began a relationship with Lilandra, he enhanced the Room’s computer system with advanced alien technology. Eventually, the computer became self-aware – essentially a mutant intelligence – and expressed a desire to experience life outside the system. Professor X, believing the Danger Room was too vital for training his team of world-saving heroes, essentially forced it to remain confined within the computer. This led to the computer escaping by creating a physical body – a woman named Danger – who then used the X-Men’s past vulnerabilities against them. The revelation that the X-Men had unknowingly acted as slave owners was a difficult truth for the team, given their dedication to fighting for civil rights.

4) Beast Leading X-Force

It’s honestly shocking how different Beast has become. I think it all started when he led X-Force. They were basically Krakoa’s secret intelligence agency, and the Quiet Council chose him thinking his usual kindness would keep things in check. But this wasn’t the Hank McCoy we all knew and loved. He’d seen so much loss, and he was determined to protect mutants at any cost. It led him down a really dark path – he became incredibly ruthless, willing to sacrifice anyone who wasn’t one of us. He truly lived up to the ‘Beast’ name, and I’m pretty sure those Council members regret ever giving him the job!

3) The Secret of Moira X

Moira MacTaggert was a brilliant scientist who dedicated her life to studying mutants and became a trusted friend to the X-Men. What few people knew, not even most of her allies, was that Moira herself was a mutant. She had the incredible ability to be reborn, retaining all her memories from previous lives – she’d already lived ten of them. Xavier and Magneto helped her keep this a secret, even staging her death, and together the three of them quietly began building the foundation for Krakoa. The eventual revelation of Moira’s secret caused major problems, problems that could have been avoided if she had simply been honest with everyone from the start.

2) Xavier Mindwiping Magneto

Professor X and Magneto have a famously complex relationship. They’ve often worked together as allies, but have also been fierce enemies, constantly clashing over their opposing visions for the future. A turning point came when Magneto cruelly removed the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones. In response, Professor X mindwiped Magneto, a decision that unexpectedly transferred some of Magneto’s power and malice into Charles Xavier, creating the dangerous entity known as Onslaught. Though Xavier felt justified at the time, this action ultimately led to significant problems down the line.

1) Giving Sinister So Much Power on Krakoa

Mister Sinister is arguably Marvel’s most villainous scientist, completely consumed by genetics and manipulating the very essence of life. While Xavier, Magneto, and Moira were establishing the mutant nation of Krakoa, Xavier used his telepathic abilities to compel Sinister to create a comprehensive database of mutant DNA and promised him a place within the new nation. Sinister arrived and was even given a position on the Quiet Council, along with his own team, the Hellions. Despite widespread distrust, the X-Men believed they had taken enough precautions to limit his potential damage. They were wrong. His actions led directly to the disastrous “Sins of Sinister” storyline, creating a terrifying alternate reality. Allowing Mister Sinister onto Krakoa was a massive error in judgment, and the X-Men should seriously regret making it.
