Big things are coming for Dragon Ball in 2026, with a major announcement planned to reveal what’s next for the series. Although we won’t see new story details at this year’s Jump Festa, the “Genki Dama Festival” next January will share exciting updates about the anime. With that in mind, let’s look ahead and consider what fans are hoping to see. We’ve picked seven characters whose backstories we’d love to explore in more detail.
7.) Gine: Goku’s Mother
The movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly not only brought the powerful character Broly into the main storyline but also introduced Goku’s mother, Gine. The film takes place before Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta and offers a glimpse into Saiyan life. While the Saiyan race is known for its strength and fighting, Gine is portrayed as a more domestic figure, cooking and taking care of their home while her husband, Bardock, was away on missions. Fans are eager to learn more about Gine’s backstory – how she met Bardock, how she raised Goku and Raditz, and what life was like for women in Saiyan society. With recent storylines, like the Granolah the Survivor Arc, exploring Saiyan history further, Gine’s story deserves to be expanded upon.
6.) King Cold: Frieza’s Father

While Frieza is known for ruling a vast galactic empire with countless soldiers and planets, he didn’t actually start it. His father, King Cold, was likely even more powerful, and exploring his rise to power and how he built the organization would be a compelling story. It would also be fascinating to see the family relationships between Cold, Frieza, and Cooler – perhaps even a dark, anime-style take on the show Succession. We got a glimpse of Cold handing over his empire to Frieza in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and fans would love to see more of that transition.
5.) Turles: Goku’s Bizarre Doppelganger

Many movie villains in the Dragon Ball series have simple origins before attacking the Z-Fighters and endangering Earth. Turles is one of the most puzzling – a Saiyan who arrived on Earth with a group of aliens to plant the Tree of Might. By eating its fruit, he and his crew aimed to become incredibly powerful. While his motivations as a Saiyan are understandable, the fact that he looks exactly like Goku has always been a strange unanswered question. Though he recently reappeared in the non-canon series Super Dragon Ball Heroes, integrating Turles into the main story could create a compelling new villain similar to Goku Black.
4.) Dr. Gero: Red Ribbon Army’s Smartest Scientist

Out of all the characters listed, Dr. Gero’s story seems like the most compelling origin story. He had a huge impact on the Z-Fighters by creating Androids 16, 17, 18, and Cell, but there’s a lot more to his past than we’ve seen. The movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero revealed he was married to the woman who became Android 21, and their son may have been the inspiration for Android 16. There are still many unanswered questions about his history with the Red Ribbon Army, and we’d love to learn more about what made him the villain he became.
3.) Tarble: Vegeta’s Brother

Vegeta’s brother, Tarble, is often jokingly called the ‘Poochy’ of the Dragon Ball world. He showed up in a one-off story before the Z Fighters returned in Dragon Ball Super. Vegeta suddenly revealed he had a younger brother, someone he’d never mentioned before coming to Earth. Honestly, many fans would prefer Tarble stay forgotten, but if he’s going to remain a character, giving him more backstory could make him more interesting. He’s been traveling the universe for years, which creates opportunities for stories that could finally give him a compelling personality and make him a truly cool character.
2.) Bojack: Universe 7’s Most Powerful Pirate

While Bojack has a bit more established history than villains like Turles and Cooler, he’s still a movie-only character, and it would be great to know more about how he became such a powerful threat in Bojack: Unbound. The story of him being imprisoned on a planet by the Supreme Kais would make for an incredible fight scene. Similar to what they did with Broly, expanding Bojack’s backstory and bringing him into the main Dragon Ball story could be worthwhile, especially considering the recent Moro Arc explored the Supreme Kais’ past. Space pirates aren’t common in the main storyline, and introducing Bojack could open up exciting new possibilities for the universe.
1.) The Heeters: Dragon Ball’s Planet Brokers

The Heeters – Elec, Oil, Macki, and Gas – and their connection to Frieza’s family suggest a long history that could be explored through the story of King Cold. Although the Granolah the Survivor arc hinted at their past, there’s clearly much more to uncover about this criminal organization and the shady dealings they were involved in before Frieza eliminated some of its members. Fans are eager to see Toei Animation bring their full story to life in the anime.
