7 Eras a Wolverine Miniseries Could Revisit

Wolverine is a hugely popular Marvel character, appearing in many different forms of media. Over the past 52 years, he’s been part of incredible adventures with teams like the X-Men and the Avengers, as well as going on solo missions and teaming up with other heroes. For years, fans were drawn to his mysterious past, knowing very little about his long life. Marvel has gradually revealed more and more of his backstory over the decades, creating a rich and detailed history. This complex background makes Wolverine a versatile character who can easily fit into almost any story.

Marvel frequently releases limited series that appeal to longtime fans by revisiting popular storylines and characters from the past. While Wolverine has been featured in some of these nostalgic series, many periods of his life remain unexplored. Here are seven eras in Wolverine’s history that would make excellent miniseries, adding more depth to his already rich backstory.

7) His Time With Romulus

Romulus is a major threat to Wolverine, first appearing as a mysterious and manipulative figure in his life. He served as the primary antagonist in the “Evolution” and “Wolverine: Origins” storylines, as well as “Sabretooth Reborn.” The latter revealed a shared history between Wolverine, Romulus, his sister Remus, and Sabretooth – a time when Wolverine even willingly joined the Weapon X program as part of their plans. There are many untold stories from this era, and exploring it would add depth to Wolverine’s past.

6) His Post-WWII Life in Japan

Following World War II, Logan found himself in Japan, seeking peace through martial arts training and hoping to escape his violent past. There, he met and married Itsu, a Japanese woman who later became the mother of their son, Daken. Tragically, she was killed by the Winter Soldier on orders from the Soviet Union. While there’s limited material about this time in Logan’s life – mostly found in Logan: Path of the Warlord and a few other stories – it would be great to see more of this era explored. It would allow us to see a different side of Wolverine and learn more about one of his most significant relationships.

5) Madripoor

Madripoor holds a significant place in Wolverine’s past. He first visited the lawless island around the time of World War I and eventually began working for Seraph, who ran the Princess Saloon. Since then, he’s returned to Madripoor many times, using the alias ‘Patch’ to relax, drink, and get into fights. While there was a ‘Patch’ miniseries a few years ago, Madripoor remains one of the most interesting locations in the Marvel universe, and with so much history there, it’s time for another Wolverine story set on the island.

4) Feral Era

The 1990s saw a major shift in Wolverine’s comic book portrayal. In 1993, he lost his adamantium skeleton, and it wasn’t restored until 1999. This period, often called the “feral era,” caused his mutant abilities to become more animalistic. Many fans consider these six years to be a high point for the character, filled with some of his best stories. It would be fantastic to revisit this era, especially with the possibility of bringing back Larry Hama, the writer behind most of these iconic issues.

3) Department H Missions

As a huge comic fan, I always thought it was cool how Wolverine first showed up in The Incredible Hulk as part of Canada’s secret super-soldier program, Department H. They were building him up to lead Alpha Flight! It’s fascinating to me that he left to join the X-Men, but I’d absolutely love to see a story exploring those early days with Department H. Imagine a tale of Wolverine and the original Alpha Flight team fighting bad guys for Canada – that would be amazing! It feels like that era is largely unexplored, and a good story there could really bring Alpha Flight back into the spotlight after years of being overlooked.

2) World War I

Wolverine’s long life means he’s been involved in countless conflicts, but his time in World War I is surprisingly overlooked. While fighting with the Canadian army, he trained with a soldier named Silas Burr, who would later become the villain Cyber. During this period, Wolverine was also being watched by Romulus, who was using Burr as a pawn, and his longtime rival Sabretooth was also present. Given how often stories focus on other eras, it’s time for more tales set during World War I, particularly those featuring Wolverine.

1) Team X

Team X was made up of Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Maverick – all former members of the Weapon X program. The CIA frequently deployed them on missions against Soviet sympathizers around the globe. While the team has popped up in various comics since their first appearance in 1992’s X-Men (Vol. 2) #6, they’ve rarely been the central focus of a story. The only significant full-length adventure they’ve had was a crossover with Wildstorm’s Team 7 in the 90s (they also had a brief role in 2022’s X Lives of Wolverine, but weren’t the main characters). Given the current trend of 90s X-Men nostalgia at Marvel, now would be the perfect time for a dedicated Team X miniseries.
