As a movie enthusiast with a deep passion for history, I’m thrilled to share that an array of captivating historical films are set to grace our screens over the next year or so. Renowned directors are diving headfirst into these timeless stories, covering a diverse range of subjects, eras, and genres. While period pieces often present challenges for studios due to their elevated production costs, they also have the potential to create some of the most immersive and enduring films in cinema history.
Here are the top seven historical movies that have piqued my interest and have already proven their appeal:
1. Starting us off is a gripping drama set during World War I, promising an emotional journey through the eyes of a soldier caught in the chaos.
2. A biographical comedy-drama about a legendary political figure will follow, shedding light on their personal life with a touch of humor and insight.
3. Next up is an epic historical drama that delves into the tumultuous rise and fall of an empire, bringing the grandeur of antiquity to life.
4. In the spirit of adventure, a pirate-themed film based on a true story will captivate audiences with its swashbuckling exploits and high seas drama.
5. For those seeking intrigue and suspense, a thriller centered around a historical conspiracy is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
6. A romantic period drama set in the Victorian era follows, exploring love, loss, and the challenges faced by two characters amidst the opulence and societal constraints of their time.
7. Lastly, prepare for an electrifying action-packed historical thriller that takes us into the heart of a daring heist during a pivotal moment in history.
Get ready, fellow history buffs – these films are set to make a significant impact on the silver screen!
1) Kiss of the Spider Woman – October 10th, 2025
The long-awaited return of the movie musical is here! “Andor’s” Diego Luna takes the lead in the cinematic adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical set in 1980s Argentina. This film, directed by Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast, Dreamgirls), follows two prisoners, one of whom is a devoted fan of Ingrid Luna, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez. The trailer suggests an extravagant visual feast as the story shifts between the bleak reality of their prison cells and the glamorous, larger-than-life world of their fantasies. Even if musicals aren’t your usual cup of tea, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” appears to offer a captivating narrative about the power of imagination, with an outstanding performance by Luna that could mark a new career milestone for him.
2) Dracula: A Love Tale – Fall 2025
In contrast to Robert Eggers’ somber interpretation of Dracula, Luc Besson, director of The Fifth Element, offers a vivid, colorful retelling of the classic vampire story in Dracula: A Love Tale. This visually stunning film, with its almost painterly scenes, is reason enough to watch it when it reaches US theaters. Additionally, Dracula appears to be a return to Besson’s signature style, blending horror, action, and romance effectively in his new production.
3) Hamnet – December 12th, 2025
In simpler and more conversational terms:
“The book ‘Hamnet’ was one of the most cherished and critically acclaimed titles of 2020, and luckily for readers, an all-star, award-winning team is bringing it to life on screen! The adaptation is directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, who has taken on the task of transforming the intricate and heartrending story about the death of William Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet, into a film. The movie stars Paul Mescal, known for his role in ‘Gladiator II,’ as Shakespeare, with Jessie Buckley, a favorite in independent films, playing his wife, Agnes. As the book tackles themes such as love, creativity, and loss with great finesse, we’re thrilled about the team behind this movie. While expectations are high, we don’t expect to be let down when ‘Hamnet’ premieres globally on December 12th.
4) Wuthering Heights – February 13, 2026
Following Emerald Fennell’s critically acclaimed sophomore film “Saltburn,” there has been much anticipation about her next project. The Academy Award-winning screenwriter for the thought-provoking “Promising Young Woman” will now be adapting Emily Brontë’s timeless novel “Wuthering Heights.” Although some online discussions were heated about Fennell’s casting choices for the central characters, played by Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, we can expect her unique vision to offer a fresh take on this classic story, while staying true to the original material.
5) The Bride! – March 6, 2026
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming adaptation of “The Bride of Frankenstein” is being labeled as a fusion of “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Wild at Heart.” With Christian Bale, Batman himself, joining forces with Jessie Buckley in the role of the Bride, this 1930s Chicago-set film adds even more allure. Although there are other monster stories in the pipeline, “The Bride!” seems poised to be the most creative and intriguing movie release over the next year and a half.
6) The Odyssey – July 17, 2026
Christopher Nolan has often dabbled in historical dramas, but for his upcoming masterpiece, he’s ventured even further back in time to adapt The Odyssey into a contemporary version. No one else seems capable of selling out IMAX theaters a year ahead like Nolan, and beyond an illustrious cast and undeniably breathtaking cinematography, we’re especially thrilled about Nolan reviving the classic Hollywood epic style.
7) Werwulf – December 25, 2026
Robert Eggers is truly unique when it comes to creating supernatural period pieces. Over the past ten years, his films have left audiences thinking and shivering, all set in bygone eras like ‘The VVitch’ and more recently, ‘Nosferatu’. With ‘Nosferatu’ being a hit at both box offices and with critics, there is immense anticipation for his upcoming film, ‘Werwulf’, where he will delve into another legendary creature in a medieval setting, while also reuniting with actors Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Willem Dafoe.
