Since Iron Man launched the MCU, it wasn’t surprising to fans that he became the most important hero in the franchise. Robert Downey Jr.’s captivating portrayal of Tony Stark is already considered one of the greatest casting choices in film history, giving him a key part in shaping the larger MCU narrative. Even though Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame appeared to be a definitive, heroic conclusion, his absence in the Multiverse Saga may not be forever. With several powerful MCU Avengers set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, rumors suggest that Iron Man could potentially return.
Okay, so the idea of recasting Iron Man? I get why it’ll split fans – it’s always risky. But honestly, I think it could be a *really* good move. Not only would it instantly bring a huge wave of excitement – everyone loves Iron Man – but it would open up so many possibilities for the MCU. After Endgame, we thought certain storylines and characters were off the table, but bringing Tony Stark back could let them adapt comics stories we never thought we’d see on screen. And let me tell you, that means some seriously awesome – and evil – villains could finally make an appearance. It’s a gamble, sure, but one with a potentially huge payoff. The MCU could be about to get a lot more interesting!
7) The Controller (Basil Sandhurst)

Iron Man isn’t the only Marvel character who uses a powerful suit of armor. Basil Sandhurst, also known as the Controller, has one too. His suit combines with his ability to control minds, making him a formidable foe for Iron Man. The Controller debuted in Marvel Comics in 1969 and has appeared several times since. His powers suggest he could be a really interesting villain, and a great opponent for Iron Man in the MCU.
6) Detroit Steel

As a huge MCU fan, I’ve noticed a lot of characters have already donned some version of the Iron Man suit, so the idea of seeing more isn’t far-fetched at all. I’ve been hearing the speculation about bringing Iron Man back, and if they do, I think Detroit Steel would be a really compelling villain to introduce. In the comics, several people have taken on the Detroit Steel persona – even Sasha Hammer, who’s Justin Hammer’s daughter! Setting aside that potentially personal connection, the fact that Detroit Steel is basically a super-mercenary would create a really interesting dynamic with Iron Man in the MCU – a stark contrast, you know?
5) Spymaster

Many of the most memorable Iron Man scenes center around him defending the people he cares about. If Iron Man comes back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, several of these important characters could play a role, like Happy Hogan. In the comic books, Happy Hogan is killed by the villain Spymaster as a way to target Tony Stark. This makes Spymaster a strong candidate for a villain in the MCU, and they could also easily be incorporated into stories with other heroes as well.
4) Madame Masque (Whitney Frost)

Throughout his time in Marvel comics, Iron Man has been romantically linked to several characters. One notable example is Madame Masque, who has a complicated history with Tony Stark. Bringing a new iteration of Iron Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could create opportunities for new romances, and Madame Masque would be a great fit. Their story is full of drama, excitement, and unexpected events, which could make her a fantastic villain for future MCU films.
3) Korvac (Michael Korvac)

As a huge MCU fan, I’ve seen a lot of powerful villains come and go, but it feels like there’s *always* room for one more. I think Michael Korvac, or just Korvac as he’s often known, would be a brilliant addition. He’s not just a threat to Iron Man, but to the entire Avengers team. What makes him so dangerous? Well, he can manipulate energy, and at one point, he even wielded the Power Cosmic – seriously powerful stuff! While he isn’t traditionally an Iron Man villain, there’s a ton of great storylines where he clashes with Tony Stark, making him a fantastic overall Marvel antagonist.
2) Dreadknight (Bram Helsing)

Dreadknight is the kind of complex villain that once seemed too difficult to bring to the big screen in a comic book movie, but he could be an ideal opponent for Iron Man in the future of the MCU. He’s a character linked to both Doctor Doom and Morgan Le Fay, and he’s fought against both Iron Man and Black Knight. While bringing Dreadknight into the MCU might need some imaginative storytelling, it could be a great way to connect Iron Man with the upcoming MCU hero, Black Knight.
1) Iron Man 2020 (Arno Stark)

Iron Man remains a key figure in the MCU, and his return would need a worthy opponent. Arno Stark, who goes by Iron Man 2020, might be the ideal choice. This younger cousin of Tony Stark doesn’t share the hero’s strong sense of right and wrong. Presenting him as a villain that Iron Man must defeat could be a compelling story, helping audiences connect with a reimagined version of the character. Arno Stark truly stands out as a great villainous counterpart for a new Iron Man narrative within the MCU.
