7 Fantasy TV Shows You’ll Love If You’re a Fourth Wing Fan

As a total cinema devotee, I’ve been watching this trend explode: romantasy is everywhere right now, and it’s only growing! It all started with books like Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses, which really grabbed people with its blend of passionate romance and epic fantasy worlds. We’ve always loved those big fantasy adventures, but adding a compelling love story? Genius! And while ACOTAR is massive, another series has become just as popular: Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing. It’s a really exciting time for this genre!

The Fourth Wing series, currently consisting of Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm, centers around Violet Sorrengail, a young woman unexpectedly thrust into a brutal war college to train as a dragon rider, despite her fragile health. The story follows Violet as she navigates dangerous challenges and fierce competition, all while trying to survive the attention of the formidable Xaden Riorson. Packed with action, mystery, and romance, the series has become incredibly popular and is being adapted into a television show by Amazon MGM Studios. While fans eagerly await the Fourth Wing adaptation, here are seven other fantastic fantasy shows to enjoy in the meantime.

7) House of the Dragon

It’s hard to make a list of fantasy shows without including something from the Game of Thrones universe. Considering the focus on dragons, we’re choosing House of the Dragon because it really delivers on that element. This show is a prequel to Game of Thrones, detailing the brutal civil war within the Targaryen family as the children of King Viserys I fight for the Iron Throne.

Dragons are the main draw for fans of Fourth Wing, but the stories share other similarities too. Like Basgiath War College in Fourth Wing, the world of House of the Dragon is a harsh and unforgiving place. Both stories also include a lot of political scheming, adding depth beyond just dragons and romance.

6) The Magicians

Although The Magicians doesn’t have dragons, its focus on a magical college makes it a good pick for fans of Fourth Wing. The story follows Quentin Coldwater, a student at Brakebills College, where he learns magic. He and his friends soon find out that the magical world from a beloved childhood book is real – and potentially very dangerous.

Brakebills and Basgiath are similar schools because both push their students to their limits with dangerous trials. Interestingly, Quentin and Violet share some common ground – like Quentin, Violet is also vulnerable, particularly when it comes to his mental wellbeing.

5) Fate: The Winx Saga

Fate: The Winx Saga is a show about Bloom, a fairy with fire powers who grew up with human parents on Earth. She attends a magical boarding school in a hidden world called the Otherworld, where she starts to uncover secrets about her past. However, her journey also awakens dangerous, ancient creatures called the Burned Ones, putting everyone at the school in danger.

Although Fate: The Winx Saga doesn’t feature dragons, its focus on self-discovery and the dangerous threat of the Burned Ones create a similar feeling to the world of Fourth Wing. It’s important to know the show was cancelled after two seasons, leaving some storylines unfinished. Despite this, Fourth Wing fans often recommend it, making it worth a watch.

4) Shadow and Bone

If you enjoyed Fourth Wing, you might also like Shadow and Bone. Both are based on the books of Leigh Bardugo and take place in the same fantasy universe, known as the Grishaverse. Shadow and Bone centers around Alina Starkov, an orphaned mapmaker who learns she possesses magical powers and could be the one to save her country from war.

If you enjoyed Fourth Wing, you’ll likely love Shadow and Bone. Both series deliver a thrilling combination of romance, magic, and intense, suspenseful plots. Plus, Shadow and Bone features a richly detailed and immersive world, similar to the one in Fourth Wing.

3) Motherland: Fort Salem

Unlike many other shows on this list, Motherland: Fort Salem is a bit more intense, but still a good choice for fans of Fourth Wing. It’s about three young witches who are drafted into the U.S. Army and trained to use magic in combat. The show takes place in a reimagined American history where witch hunts ended 300 years ago with the Salem Accord. However, a new threat emerges in the form of a witch-led terrorist group that opposes forcing witches to serve in the military.

As a huge fantasy fan, I’ve been noticing some cool parallels between Fourth Wing and Motherland: Fort Salem. Both shows really lean into that intense military school vibe, constantly challenging their students with incredibly dangerous training. While one features dragon riders and the other focuses on witchcraft, they both center around specialized, high-stakes abilities. But honestly, what really strikes me is how the relationships develop in both stories – starting with animosity and gradually building into these incredibly strong, found-family dynamics. And let’s not forget, both are packed with action and drama, which is exactly what I look for in a good watch!

2) The Outpost

If you loved Fourth Wing, you should definitely check out The Outpost. It’s a bit of a hidden gem in the fantasy TV world. The show centers around Talon, the sole survivor of a unique race, who initially sets out to avenge her family. Along the way, she uncovers a powerful, magical ability that could determine the fate of not just herself, but everyone.

Although The Outpost isn’t set in a school like Fourth Wing, it does share the “chosen one” trope with Violet’s story. Both series feature incredibly high stakes and a constant struggle for survival. Plus, The Outpost includes a variety of magical creatures, creating a similar feel to the worldbuilding in Fourth Wing – even though it doesn’t have dragons.

1) Vampire Academy

If you enjoyed Fourth Wing, you’ll likely love Vampire Academy. Like Fourth Wing, it’s based on a popular book series (this one by Richelle Mead) and features a supernatural boarding school setting. The story follows Rose Hathaway, a guardian-in-training, and her best friend, Lissa Dragomir, a royal vampire, as they navigate life at St. Vladimir’s Academy.

St. Vlad’s, much like the school in Fourth Wing, is a challenging and perilous place, especially for Rose, who is training to protect Lissa from powerful, dangerous vampires. The series includes a classic enemies-to-lovers romance, complex relationships between mentors and students, and constant, high-stakes action. Political scheming adds another layer of unpredictability. Although Vampire Academy lasted only one season, it was packed with excitement – and fans of Fourth Wing are sure to enjoy it.
