It makes sense that video games and anime often blend together, resulting in many hits. There’s a whole genre dedicated to watching characters play games – that’s the core appeal. While some stories involve characters getting stuck inside the games, most simply show them enjoying games as part of their everyday lives.
This list features anime that showcase a variety of video games, all with unique and visually appealing designs. The story follows Hiro as he enters a highly realistic virtual world game, only to find that his actions consistently make things worse.
This anime series breaks all the usual RPG rules because the main character, Hiro, is playing a really awful, obscure game. While it’s not a top-tier show, it delivers one of the most original video game experiences you’ll find in anime.
6). Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Rin Kokuyo’s Recovery of an MMO Junkie is a hidden gem within the MMO genre. It takes a completely different approach, offering a lighthearted and enchanting story about Moriko, who leaves her job to dedicate herself to playing her beloved online game. She finds unexpected joy and personal growth through connecting with a new player, transforming her life in the process.
This anime is a charming and relaxing watch, but sadly, a second season won’t be made because the original series was cancelled due to the creator’s health. Despite that, it’s a genuinely enjoyable experience, and the game adaptation looks like a lot of fun to play and progress in.
5). Accel World
Accel World, created by the author of Sword Art Online, delivers another engaging virtual reality story, but with lighter consequences than its earlier work. It’s a feel-good series about a bullied boy who finds confidence and even the attention of a popular classmate through a captivating game.
Haru learns a new skill to boost his mental speed and unexpectedly finds himself in a virtual game world. This world features a huge tournament where players battle for the top spot, and it’s exciting to watch – giving a glimpse of how amazing a truly immersive virtual reality experience could be.
4). Hi Score Girl
While technically featuring existing games, Hi Score Girl deserves recognition for including so many authentic 1990s arcade titles. The anime follows two young people who bond over their passion for fighting games, with each episode using a different game to explore their developing relationship. It’s packed with classic games and definitely worth watching if you haven’t seen it yet!
3). BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense
Looking for a lighthearted anime where the main character is incredibly powerful and enjoys a fun virtual world? Look no further than BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. The story follows Kaede, who starts playing a VRMMO with a friend but wants to avoid taking damage. She creates a character focused entirely on defense, maximizing those stats, and then tackles various quests in the game with that unique build.
Watching Kaede develop strategies to overcome enemies using her defenses is really enjoyable, and she becomes powerful enough to defeat huge opponents with a combination of stat upgrades and clever tactics. The anime clearly understands its own game mechanics and uses them in exciting ways.
2). Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
While Sword Art Online Alternative takes place in the world of Gun Gale Online, it’s quite different from the original Sword Art Online series. Instead of a life-or-death struggle in a virtual reality game, the story follows LLENN, a girl who joins to have fun with friends. She uses a tiny, unique avatar to quickly move through exciting gun fights, making Gun Gale Online look like a really enjoyable game. However, it doesn’t quite reach the same level of quality as the original VRMMO.
1). Shangri-La Frontier
Katarina’s Shangri-La Frontier is widely considered the best anime centered around video games. The story follows Rakuro, a gamer who enjoys mastering incredibly difficult and flawed games. Seeking a new challenge, he decides to try a highly-rated game for the first time, leading him into a fascinating fantasy world. The series pays close attention to detail, with many episodes showcasing Rakuro carefully planning how to overcome challenges and diligently improving his character’s abilities.
This game world is truly one-of-a-kind, filled with secret bosses that haven’t been discovered yet, and mastering different character builds leads to stunningly epic fights. Each new episode reveals more of this fascinating world and hints at an unbelievably immersive experience that feels like it should be real. What really sets this anime apart is its unconventional protagonist, who stubbornly insists on doing things the hard way.
