Most people agree the 1990s were a fantastic decade, particularly for entertainment. The music, TV shows, and video games were incredibly memorable, and it was a great time for movies too. Both science fiction and horror films flourished, and we saw the beginning of many beloved romantic comedies and teen movies. While not every film was perfect, the 90s were a golden age for movie fans, and many of us still feel nostalgic for that era.
Even though we can’t travel back to the ’90s, we can still enjoy the iconic movies from that decade. Luckily, streaming makes it easy! This month, there’s a great selection of ’90s films available, and you don’t even need a subscription to a major streaming service to watch them. Several free streaming platforms—like Tubi, Pluto TV, and Kanopy—offer a fantastic range of ’90s movies in April. We’ve put together a list of seven recommendations, including where to watch them for free.
7) Clueless (Available on Pluto TV April 1st)
No list of great ’90s movies would be complete without Clueless. This hilarious 1995 teen comedy, directed by Amy Heckerling, is based on Jane Austen’s Emma. It follows Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), a popular and wealthy high school student in Beverly Hills, as she tries to help others by setting up her teachers and giving a new, less-stylish student, Tai (Brittany Murphy), a makeover. But when Tai becomes more popular than Cher, Cher starts to question her own motivations, especially with some gentle nudging from her ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd). The film also stars Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya.
With its memorable lines and trendsetting style—we even spoke with costume designer Mona May about the film’s iconic fashion—Clueless remains a defining movie of the ’90s. But don’t just take our word for it: the Library of Congress recognized its cultural importance by adding it to the United States National Film Registry in 2025. You can watch it for free on Pluto TV this month.
6) Election (Available on Pluto TV April 1st)

Released in 1999, Election is a fantastic, yet often overlooked, ’90s film. This satirical black comedy, directed by Alexander Payne and adapted from Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel, stars Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. The story revolves around a high school student election, where a teacher, Jim McAllister (Broderick), tries to derail the campaign of an ambitious and successful student, Tracy Flick (Witherspoon), whom he strongly dislikes.
Critics loved this film for its clever, dark humor and the actors’ excellent performances. It’s a really smart and funny satire that often appears on lists of the best movies ever made. The ending differs significantly from the book, but if you enjoy the story, the author, Perrotta, released a sequel in 2022. Originally released in 1999, this is a movie you definitely shouldn’t miss – it’s available to stream on Pluto TV for free this month.
5) Mrs. Doubtfire (Tubi April 1st)

Robin Williams was a comedic genius, and many consider Mrs. Doubtfire to be his funniest and most heartwarming film. Now available on Tubi starting April 1st, this classic movie is uniquely brought to life by Williams, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role. It’s a film that continues to make audiences laugh and feel deeply.
Chris Columbus’s Mrs. Doubtfire tells the story of Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams), a recently divorced voice actor who struggles to maintain a relationship with his children. After losing custody due to financial instability, he’s determined to prove he can be a responsible parent. When his ex-wife advertises for a housekeeper, Daniel comes up with a clever plan: he disguises himself as Euphegenia Doubtfire, an elderly British nanny, hoping to stay close to his kids. What follows is a series of funny and touching moments. The film is both hilarious and deeply emotional, guaranteed to make you laugh and cry. It’s considered one of the best films not just of the 1990s, but of Robin Williams’ entire career.
4) A Few Good Men (Tubi April 1st)

Though many remember A Few Good Men for Jack Nicholson’s famous “you can’t handle the truth!” scene, it’s a truly well-made film. Directed by Rob Reiner and released in 1992, the movie features a fantastic cast including Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and others like Kevin Bacon and Cuba Gooding Jr. It’s a legal drama centered around the court-martial of two Marines (Wolfgang Bodison and James Marshall) accused of killing Private William Santiago. As the case unfolds, they discover the truth is far more complex and disturbing than they initially thought.
The movie was a huge success with both critics and audiences, offering a fresh, modern spin on the traditional courtroom drama. Jack Nicholson gives one of his finest performances, and Tom Cruise is particularly impressive as JAG lawyer Daniel Kaffee, who defends Dawson and Downey. It’s a truly memorable film that remains enjoyable even today, and you can stream it on Tubi this month.
3) Face/Off (Kanopy April 24th)

If you’re looking for a movie that’s completely wild but also incredibly entertaining, look no further than Face/Off. This 1997 action film, directed by John Woo, stars John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. They play an FBI agent and a terrorist who undergo a radical procedure to switch faces and identities, hoping to thwart a dangerous plot. But things quickly become messy when the terrorist, disguised as the agent, seeks revenge and starts causing trouble.
While the idea behind Face/Off is completely wild, it’s a fantastic movie. The action is excellent, but the real standout is the acting. Both Travolta and Cage deliver incredible performances, not only in their own roles but also brilliantly portraying each other’s characters. It’s a complex, captivating film that will keep you hooked. You can watch it for free on Kanopy starting April 24th. Kanopy is a free streaming service available with your library card, offering a variety of movies and shows.
2) Event Horizon (Tubi April 1st)

The 1990s produced a lot of excellent science fiction films, but some didn’t receive the recognition they deserved, and that’s certainly the case with Event Horizon. This sci-fi horror movie, directed by Paul Anderson and starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, and Joely Richardson, centers around a team of astronauts sent to investigate a spaceship that vanished seven years prior. The ship has unexpectedly returned after sending out a distress signal.
Although critics didn’t love it and it wasn’t a box office success, the movie has gained a dedicated following over time as people rediscover it. A sequel also exists in the form of the comic book series Event Horizon: Inferno from IDW. Now, you can watch the original movie for free on Tubi this month.
1) Galaxy Quest (Pluto TV April 1st)

Released in December 1999, Galaxy Quest is a fantastic film and arguably one of the best things to come from the world of Star Trek. It cleverly spoofs and celebrates science fiction, particularly Star Trek, telling the story of the actors from a cancelled TV show, Galaxy Quest, who are mistaken for real heroes by aliens and drawn into a genuine space war.
While many attempts at parody fall flat, Galaxy Quest nails it. It’s clear the filmmakers genuinely love sci-fi, and that passion shines through. The movie also boasts a fantastic cast, including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell. If you haven’t seen this hilarious and heartwarming film, or just want to enjoy a great movie night, it will be available on Tubi in April.
