7 Great Black Panther Characters That Still Need an MCU Appearance

We eagerly anticipate seeing several Marvel Comics characters from Wakanda debut in future instalments of the Black Panther series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Chadwick Boseman’s introduction as T’Challa’s Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, the fictitious African nation of Wakanda has emerged as one of the most intriguing locations to delve into within the MCU. Characters from Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the upcoming Eyes of Wakanda series have already been introduced, but we can’t get enough!

It’s been wonderful discovering T’Challa (Boseman), Shuri (Wright), Ramonda (Bassett), Okoye (Gurira), M’Baku (Duke), Nakia (Nyong’o) and others in Black Panther, but there are even more fascinating characters from the Marvel Comics universe connected to Black Panther that could enrich the MCU. As Ryan Coogler prepares for Black Panther 3 and the MCU approaches a reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems like the perfect opportunity to introduce these new faces. Doing so would not only deepen our understanding of Wakanda’s past and present, but also pave the way for stories involving mutants.

7) Achebe

First introduced in Marvel Comics’ Black Panther (Vol. 2) #3 published in 1999, Achebe emerged as one of Black Panther’s most persistent adversaries with a chilling presence. As per legend, Achebe was believed to have been slain by radical rebels who torched his farm and stabbed him 32 times, only for him to cheat death by striking a deal with Mephisto. Upon his resurrection, he swore vengeance, thwarting Black Panther’s efforts to extend a helping hand and dismantling his charitable initiatives and refugee programs. With Mephisto (portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen) now part of the MCU, it would be thrilling to witness Achebe reappear as a formidable human antagonist for the Black Panther.

6) Changamire

A philosopher who served as Queen Ramonda’s mentor, a tutor for King T’Chaka’s court, and was known as Changamire, debuted in Marvel Comics’ 2016 issue of Black Panther (Vol. 6) #2. In the comics, Changamire’s teachings influenced one of his former students, Tetu, to mobilize an army and challenge King T’Challa. However, Changamire disagreed with Tetu’s violent approach and eventually joined forces with the Black Panther to undermine Tetu’s military strength. With rumors swirling that Denzel Washington will feature in Black Panther 3, some fans are excited at the possibility of him portraying Changamire, as this could add depth and wisdom to the Black Panther series.

5) Queen Divine Justice

In 2018’s “Black Panther”, we were introduced to Wakanda’s Jabari tribe, led by M’Baku, who honor a gorilla deity named Hanuman instead of the panther goddess Bast. Within Marvel Comics, Damola, the chief of the Jabari tribe, is Ce’Athauna Asira Davin’s father. Debuting in 1999, she took on the nickname Queen Divine Justice following her parents’ demise. For several years, she was safeguarded by the Black Panther in Chicago, but later returned to Wakanda and emerged as a powerful hero. Recently, “Ironheart” on Marvel Television has brought the MCU to Chicago, and it’s quite plausible that Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) and Queen Divine Justice may have met.

4) Gentle

Nezhno Abidemi, more commonly known as Gentle, is a prominent character in Marvel Comics, residing in Wakanda and possessing formidable mutant abilities. First appearing in “New X-Men (Vol. 2) #23” back in 2006, Gentle’s unique mutation enables him to amplify his muscle mass, thereby adjusting his size and strength on command. T’Challa and Storm successfully persuaded Gentle to join Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, where he eventually became a key figure in various X-Men teams. With Jake Schreier confirmed as the director of the MCU’s evolving X-Men reboot, introducing Gentle in “Black Panther 3” would be an ideal opportunity for his debut.

3) White Wolf

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, has occasionally gone by the name White Wolf following his time in Wakanda during Phase 3. However, the White Wolf from Marvel Comics hasn’t made an appearance yet in the MCU. The comic book version of White Wolf is actually Hunter, T’Challa and Shuri’s adoptive brother who serves as the leader of Wakanda’s secret police, the Hatut Zeraze. This secret police force will be introduced in the animated “Eyes of Wakanda” series, which could potentially bring the genuine White Wolf into the MCU. It is also hoped that Bucky Barnes may eventually wear an official White Wolf costume.

2) Monica Lynne

Following T’Challa’s heroic act of rescuing Monica Lynne from the Sons of the Serpent’s hateful racism, a lasting romance blossomed between them. Monica, who was one of Black Panther’s earliest romantic interests, first appeared in Avengers #73 back in 1969, and they were even set to marry, but the wedding was postponed when T’Challa received a disturbing message from the future. Monica was later abducted by Achebe and then Killmonger, and she clashed with T’Challa as he entered new relationships with characters like Nakia and Storm. It would be heartening to witness this enduring and passionate love tale unfold in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

1) Storm

Reflecting on the significant love interests of Black Panther, none have been as impactful as his rollercoaster relationship with the esteemed Storm from the X-Men. As a youngster, I crossed paths with Ororo Munroe in the Serengeti, and we embarked on some unforgettable escapades before going our own ways. Later, T’Challa ascended to the throne of Wakanda, while Storm joined the X-Men. Our bond was rekindled, leading us to marriage. However, during the 2012 Avengers vs. X-Men clash, we parted ways. Nevertheless, our love has found its way back multiple times since then.

In comic books, Storm is known as one of the mightiest mutants, yet her live-action portrayals have fallen short of embodying her divine character. With the upcoming reboot of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it would be thrilling to see a screen adaptation that truly represents Storm’s comic book essence. The forthcoming Black Panther 3 might pave the way for Storm’s introduction, while the events of Avengers: Secret Wars could establish both Storm and a new Black Panther, potentially setting the stage for one of Marvel’s most enduring love stories to unfold on screen at last.
