7 Great DC Heroes Nobody Talks About

DC Comics pioneered the modern superhero, captivating readers for decades with the thrilling stories of iconic characters. Although Marvel has recently gained more widespread popularity thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC still created some of the most beloved and influential superheroes ever. Characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and many others are instantly recognizable, and heroes like Green Lantern and the Flash have also enjoyed periods of mainstream success. While these are the most famous DC heroes, they represent only a small fraction of the vast universe of characters the publisher has created.

While DC Comics is famous for its most popular heroes, the company has created many other incredible characters over its nearly century-long history. Some of these heroes have faded into obscurity, but they remain fantastic. Here are seven DC heroes who deserve more recognition.

7) Bumblebee

As a huge DC fan, I always loved the Teen Titans – they’ve had some seriously amazing heroes on that team! You’ve got the big names like Nightwing, Donna Troy, and Starfire, of course, but I’ve always felt Bumblebee deserves way more recognition. Karen Beecher was a total genius who joined the Titans with her boyfriend, Mal Duncan, back in the earlier days. She built this incredible suit that let her fly and shrink, and eventually, she actually gained shrinking powers from the tech itself! Honestly, she’s like a mix of the Wasp and Hank Pym, but even cooler, and she’s a strong character who should be much more popular than she is. It’s a shame she wasn’t part of the famous New Teen Titans run, because I think she’d be a household name if she had been.

6) Zauriel

Zauriel first appeared in issues 6-7 of the JLA comic, written by Grant Morrison. As an angel from the Silver City, he alerted the Justice League to an impending attack on Earth led by Asmodel and the Bull Legion, all to protect a woman he’d been watching over for years. Zauriel was initially intended to fill a similar role to Hawkman within the team and remained a member throughout Morrison’s run on the title. While he’s starred in several short series, Zauriel hasn’t reached his full potential in terms of popularity. Ironically, his decline began almost immediately in JLA when other heroes joined, pushing him into the background. DC Comics never really gave the character a chance to shine, even overlooking him for a spot on the Justice League Dark, where he would have been a natural fit.

5) Mon-El

I’ve always been fascinated by Mon-El! He’s a Daxamite, which means he’s basically a cousin to Superman, with incredible powers. I remember reading about how young Clark met him in Smallville, and they had adventures together, but Mon-El got really sick from lead poisoning. It was heartbreaking! Clark, being the hero he is, sent Mon-El to the Phantom Zone to protect him, hoping to find a cure. Sadly, it took over a thousand years before Brainiac 5 finally discovered a way to save him! After that, Mon-El joined the Legion of Superheroes and quickly became one of their strongest members. His backstory has been retold a few times over the years, like many of the Legionnaires’, but he always remains a truly powerful and impressive hero. Honestly, he’s one of DC’s most underrated characters and deserves so much more recognition!

4) Lilith Clay

Lilith Clay is a lesser-known member of the Teen Titans, joining the team before the popular “New Teen Titans” era. She’s a powerful character with telepathic and telekinetic abilities, and her powers and red hair are similar to those of Jean Grey before her story became complicated. Unlike Jean Grey, Lilith didn’t get a significant chance to return after the initial team gained popularity. She appeared sporadically for years, and eventually joined the casts of “Titans” and “Power Girl” in the 21st century. She’s a likable character with incredible potential, and her recent appearance in “Power Girl” was particularly well-received. Hopefully, she’ll get more attention and a bigger role in future stories.

3) Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate has existed in comic books for 85 years, and has often paved the way for new magical heroes. The original Doctor Fate was Kent Nelson, who discovered a powerful helmet called the Helm of Order during an archaeological excavation. This helmet housed the ancient being Nabu, and when Nelson wore it, he became a magical protector and a founding member of the Justice Society of America. Several different people have become Doctor Fate since then, with Khalid Nassour currently holding the mantle as a descendant of Kent Nelson. Think of Doctor Fate as a more compelling version of Doctor Strange – each iteration of the character explores different themes and powers, ranging from a classic Golden Age hero to a surprisingly edgy character from the 1990s.

2) Atom-Smasher

Atom-Smasher began his superhero journey as Nuklon, inheriting a complex family history. As the grandson of the villain Cyclotron, he was raised by Cyclotron’s rival, the Atom, a key member of the Justice Society. He first gained prominence with Infinity Inc., a team similar to the Teen Titans for the JSA, and later joined both the Justice League and a revamped JSA. During the Geoff Johns era of the JSA, he became a standout member, particularly through his engaging relationships with Stargirl and Black Adam. He briefly left the team alongside Black Adam to help liberate Khandaq, an event that unfortunately stalled his momentum. While he did reappear with the team later, he’s mostly been a supporting character since then, which is disappointing considering his significant potential. It’s time for someone to really showcase what Atom-Smasher can do.

1) Hourman I

The Justice Society was DC’s very first superhero team, and its original members are legendary. While many of them are well-known, Hourman I doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Hourman, whose real name was Rex Tyler, was a chemist who invented a drug called Miraclo. This drug gave him incredible strength and protection for one hour, but he eventually became addicted to it and the excitement of being a hero. Even after the Justice Society broke up due to political pressure, Hourman continued fighting crime for years while battling his addiction. He’s a surprisingly complex character, and could have become as popular as heroes like the original Sandman, who starred in Sandman Mystery Theater in the 1990s. As a huge fan, I truly believe Hourman is one of the most underrated heroes in the DC Universe.
