7 Great DC Teams That Deserve a Comeback

DC Comics created the Justice Society by uniting its Golden Age heroes – a truly historic event in comics. This team pioneered the idea of superhero groups, paving the way for iconic teams like the Justice League from the original comic publisher. While some teams, such as the Justice League, consistently remain popular and influential, inspiring both heroes and villains, others experience periods of popularity followed by relative obscurity before being revived later on.

The publisher has recently been expanding the possibilities for team-based comics with titles like Justice League Unlimited, Titans, and JSA. But there are many other fantastic DC teams that deserve another chance to shine. Here are seven teams that should make a big return and rejoin the publisher during this exciting time for DC comics.

7) Justice Legion A

As a huge DC fan, I think DC One Million is still the peak event of the ’90s, and it gave us an incredible Justice League! The Justice Legion A – basically the League from the year 853 – features future versions of heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Hourman, and Starman. These aren’t your everyday superheroes; they’re unbelievably powerful legacy characters dealing with threats that are just on another level. They’ve popped up in stories here and there, but honestly, I’d love to see them get their own ongoing series. Whether it’s set in the future, brings them to our time, or sends them hopping through the multiverse, they deserve a dedicated book – they really do!

6) Secret Society of Supervillains

While DC Comics is famous for the Legion of Doom (which has also been known as the Injustice League or Gang), another powerful group often gets overlooked: the Secret Society of Supervillains. This team, popular during the Bronze Age of comics, featured lesser-known villains such as Reverse Flash, the Wizard, Star Sapphire, and Floronic Man. Though sometimes confused with the Legion of Doom in recent stories, it would be great to see a return to the original idea behind the Secret Society. They were the first villain team to have their own comic book series, and deserve another one.

5) The Freedom Fighters

The Freedom Fighters were a superhero team from the Golden Age of comics, originally published by Quality Comics. When that company closed down, the team became part of the larger DC Universe. Its members included Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, Doll-Man, Human Bomb, Black Condor, and the Ray. Within DC, they were initially placed on Earth-X – a world where Nazi Germany won World War II. After the Crisis event, most of them were reimagined as updated versions of the original Golden Age heroes (though Uncle Sam is unique as the literal spirit of freedom and is immortal). While DC has attempted to boost their popularity several times without much success, the Freedom Fighters still have a lot of potential, and now might be the perfect time for another try.

4) Suicide Squad

The idea of a ‘Suicide Squad’ – a team sent on incredibly risky missions – was a smart one. The original concept involved a military unit, and Amanda Waller later revived it with a team of supervillains. While DC has attempted to rebuild the team’s popularity since their movie debut, it hasn’t quite taken hold. Given the current state of the DC Multiverse, now would be a perfect time to bring a new iteration of the Squad together, operating in the shadows to handle the missions no hero wants.

3) The Secret Six

The Secret Six started as a team assembled by Mockingbird, but the initial concept didn’t last. The idea was revived shortly before Infinite Crisis when a new Mockingbird gathered a team of villains to combat the Society, a powerful group of DC bad guys. While the team gained popularity initially, it eventually lost momentum. A new iteration appeared in a short series in 2025, but a consistent, ongoing Secret Six title would be ideal. A strong approach might be to combine elements from both the Infinite Crisis team and the 2025 version, offering fans the best of both worlds. Personally, I’d love to see Dreamer and Catman team up and have a larger role – I just want more stories featuring those characters!

2) Teen Titans

While the current Titans team is established in DC’s universe, it’s definitely time for a new iteration of the Teen Titans. A major challenge has been that the popular ‘New Teen Titans’ lineup casts a long shadow, making it hard for fresh versions to succeed. But with so many exciting young heroes available and incredibly talented writers at DC, now is the perfect moment! Perhaps Tim Drake, Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark), and Superboy could take on the role of recruiting and mentoring a new generation of teen heroes – similar to how Geoff Johns revitalized the team in the 2000s. It’s been too long since we’ve had a truly significant Teen Titans team, and it’s time for that to change.

1) The Outsiders

The Outsiders are a surprisingly great team that don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Originally formed by Batman, the team was meant to be a group of heroes who would follow his lead. While the initial team from the 1980s didn’t find lasting success, a new version emerged in the 2000s led by Nightwing. Although Batman later took over, that series was ultimately canceled – a rare occurrence for a DC book featuring Batman! The team didn’t reappear until 2023, but that iteration felt disconnected from the Outsiders’ history, resembling another series entirely. Now, someone like Damian Wayne or another key member of the Bat-Family should really bring the Outsiders back – it’s been a long time, and they deserve a proper revival.
