7 Great Superhero Animated Series You Can Binge in a Weekend

Superhero TV shows have changed. Now, when Marvel releases a new series on Disney+, people expect it to heavily impact the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. Take Loki, for example – it might seem like a simple story about a different version of the character, but it’s actually setting up major events for the next Avengers movie, especially concerning the multiverse and Doctor Doom. DC is doing the same thing, with Peacemaker Season 2 continuing the story from Superman and leading into future projects.

DC Studios’ animated shows, like Creature Commandos, are full of hidden references and familiar characters from the DC Universe. But even if you don’t have time to follow a whole franchise, there are still plenty of great superhero cartoons to enjoy. Here are seven animated series you can easily binge-watch over a weekend.

7) Wolverine and the X-Men

When it comes to X-Men cartoons, X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 are often considered the best. But Wolverine and the X-Men is also a great watch, especially because it focuses on Wolverine as a leader – something he doesn’t usually do. Over its 26 episodes, the show features almost every important X-Men character and gives them all significant roles. Even though the series ends abruptly, it’s still worth checking out.

6) Batman Beyond

Watching all 52 episodes of Batman Beyond as a weekend binge is a bit of a commitment, especially since it’s a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series. However, if you’re up for it, it’s a great show! Batman Beyond takes place in a future Gotham City and features a new Batman, Terry McGinnis. He’s a different hero than Bruce Wayne, but offers plenty of action and a cool look. The show works best for viewers who already know the story of Batman.

5) Marvel Zombies

Similar to Batman Beyond, Marvel Zombies feels connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe because it features familiar characters. However, everyone in the show is a different version of those characters, with unique stories separate from what you’ve seen in the live-action movies. This makes Marvel Zombies a good place to start, even if you’re new to the series, as it tells a scary and exciting story about undead heroes and villains. Plus, with just one short season of six episodes, it’s definitely worth checking out.

4) The Boys Presents: Diabolical

Even dedicated fans of The Boys might not know about its highly-rated spinoff, The Boys Presents: Diabolical. This series features standalone stories set in the same universe, and they’re all surprisingly twisted. You’ll see characters like Homelander pop up, making its single season a great way to pass the time while waiting for the final season of The Boys next year.

3) Green Lantern: The Animated Series

Batman and Superman often steal the spotlight when people talk about DC’s animated shows, but there are other fantastic series worth mentioning. Green Lantern: The Animated Series is one of them – even though it only lasted one season, it’s a high-quality show that doesn’t get enough attention. It does a great job of portraying Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern team authentically, and it effectively addresses the shortcomings of the live-action Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

2) Batman: The Brave and the Bold

The Dark Knight is known for its serious tone, reflecting the grim reality of Gotham City. If you’re looking for a lighter take on the Batman mythos, Batman: The Brave and the Bold offers a refreshing change. This series lets Batman enjoy the more playful side of being a superhero. Despite only lasting three seasons, the show is fast-paced and entertaining as Batman defeats villains and teams up with various sidekicks.

1) M.O.D.O.K.

Honestly, after seeing M.O.D.O.K. in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, I didn’t think he had much of a future. But his animated series totally surprised me! It’s got a really cool, different animation style, and they brought in some seriously talented people like Patton Oswalt and Jon Hamm. Plus, it’s only ten episodes, so it’s a fun, low-commitment way to see a different side of the Marvel Universe – a look at the characters who aren’t always in the spotlight.
