7 Greatest Anime of the 2010s, Ranked

The anime released in the 2010s continue to be influential today. Unlike the 2000s, which were defined by long-running series, especially in the action-adventure genre, the 2010s saw a surge in the popularity of anime released each season. This decade also marked a turning point for how people watched anime, as streaming services made it much easier to access shows beyond what was available on traditional television. This increased accessibility dramatically boosted anime’s overall popularity and helped the new series of that era reach a wider audience.

A wave of new animation studios, including MAPPA, WIT Studio, and Science SARU, emerged during this period, bringing fresh and distinctive art styles that significantly improved the overall quality of anime. Though many series have been influential, seven particularly stand out as the most impactful.

7) My Hero Academia

The anime series *My Hero Academia*, created by Kohei Horikoshi, premiered in 2016 and quickly became popular thanks to its creative world and story. It centers around Izuku Midoriya, a regular student in a world where most people have superpowers called Quirks. Even though Izuku isn’t born with a power of his own, he dreams of becoming a professional hero—someone who protects people from danger and fights villains.

Izuku is losing hope of becoming a hero until a chance encounter with his idol, All Might, completely turns his life around. The popular manga finished its ten-year run last year, and the anime series is now showing its final episodes.

6) Mob Psycho 100

Though it might not be as well-known as some other anime, *Mob Psycho 100* is widely considered a top-tier Shonen series. Created by ONE, the author of *One-Punch Man*, the show centers on Shigeo Kageyama, nicknamed Mob, a middle school student with incredibly powerful psychic abilities who wants to live a normal life and keeps his powers a secret.

To stay sharp, Mob works with Arataka Reigen, who wants to exploit Mob’s incredible powers. Even as Mob battles evil spirits at Reigen’s request, he keeps facing new problems. With the original manga finished since 2017, the anime has now also completed its adaptation of the full story.

5) Black Clover

The anime series *Black Clover* is based on the popular manga by Yuki Tabata, originally published in *Weekly Shonen Jump*. Long-running anime series were rare in the late 2010s, but *Black Clover* quickly built a huge international fanbase despite some early issues with animation quality. As the manga nears its conclusion, the anime is preparing to adapt the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc. The story centers around Asta, an orphan who strives to become the Wizard King – the most powerful mage in the kingdom.

Asta was born into a world powered by magic, but surprisingly, he has none at all. This is especially tough because his rival, Yuno, is incredibly gifted. However, Asta’s life changes when he finds a strange book that lets him cancel out magic. This allows him to join a Magic Knight Squad, and despite facing many obstacles, he’s determined to achieve his dreams.

4) Demon Slayer

Few anime or manga have had as big of a cultural effect as *Demon Slayer*, particularly after the release of its *Infinity Castle* movie. The anime first appeared in 2019 and quickly became incredibly popular due to its compelling story and beautiful animation by Ufotable. The series centers around Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy who returns home to a horrific scene: his entire family has been brutally murdered.

Tanjiro’s only remaining family is his sister, Nezuko, but she’s been transformed into a demon. Despite this, Tanjiro is determined to save her. When a Demon Slayer named Giyu Tomioka arrives to kill Nezuko, he recognizes something special about both siblings. Trusting his gut, Giyu decides to train Tanjiro to become a Demon Slayer, hoping he can destroy demons and ultimately find a way to restore Nezuko to her human form.

3) Attack on Titan

Hajime Isayama’s *Attack on Titan* manga first appeared as an anime in 2013 and quickly revolutionized the Shonen genre. It captivated audiences with its mature themes, intricate foreshadowing, unexpected twists, and a world full of unsettling mysteries. Though the manga’s ending sparked debate, fans generally loved MAPPA’s adaptation of the final season. The story is set far in the future, after humanity was almost wiped out and forced to live in fear behind massive walls. These walls are eventually broken by two terrifying Titans, causing widespread devastation.

Driven by a burning desire for revenge after losing everything to the Titans, Eren Yeager dedicates himself to their destruction. He enlists in the Survey Corps alongside his friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, determined to eliminate the Titan threat. But as the story progresses, the secrets of Eren’s history, the mysterious walls, and the Titans themselves are revealed, ultimately leading Eren to make a shocking and unforeseen decision.

2) Vinland Saga

Makoto Yukimura’s acclaimed manga received an anime adaptation in 2019, a fitting conclusion to a fantastic decade for the series. Although the manga finished its twenty-year run this year, fans are eagerly hoping for a third season of the anime. The story takes place in 11th-century Europe and follows Thorfinn, the son of a famous Viking, who was raised on tales of Vinland, a legendary land reached by ancient sailors.

Vinland is thought to be a warm and bountiful place, a stark contrast to the harsh, frozen home Thorfinn once knew. But when Thorfinn becomes caught up in the war between England and Denmark, he initially sets out on a path of revenge. Ultimately, though, he dreams of building a peaceful life in Vinland, free from slavery and fighting.

1) Haikyu!!

The popular manga series by Haruichi Furudate first appeared as an anime in 2014 and helped bring sports stories to a wider audience among fans of Shonen manga. It follows Shoyo Hinata, an energetic young boy determined to become a great volleyball player like his hero, the famous “Little Giant,” who competed at the national level.

His first middle school volleyball tournament was a disaster, as his team lost badly in the first round to the school of Tobio Kageyama. Later, Shoyo joined Karasuno High School, hoping to follow in the footsteps of the ‘Little Giant,’ only to be surprised to find his old rival, Tobio, was also there. Now teammates, they’ll have to overcome their past conflict and learn to cooperate if they want to reach the national championships.
