7 Greatest Blizzard Games of All Time

Blizzard Entertainment used to be the most popular PC game developer, and while things haven’t been quite as good since they joined with Activision, they still consistently release excellent games. With so many fantastic titles to choose from, it’s hard to narrow down the best, but a few truly stand out. If you’ve played PC games at any point in the last 35 years, you’ve likely experienced at least one of their all-time classic games.

Here are the seven best Blizzard games ever.

7) Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness

The original Warcraft game was incredibly important for online, competitive strategy games. While not the very first to include multiplayer, it really made the feature popular with PC gamers. A year later, Blizzard released Warcraft II, which was a significant improvement in almost every way and cemented Blizzard’s position as a leading game developer.

I still love jumping back into Warcraft 2. It’s super easy to learn the basics, but there’s a ton of depth if you really want to get good. The game feels really fair, and things like the fog of war keep every match exciting and unpredictable. A year after it came out, Blizzard dropped the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion, and honestly, it just took an already great game to the next level. It also proved to Blizzard that supporting a game after launch could really pay off!

6) Hearthstone

Hearthstone can be expensive to play competitively, often requiring significant spending. But if you’re willing to overlook that, it’s one of the best digital card games available. While it’s hard to say if 100 million players are always right, Hearthstone had reached that milestone as recently as 2018, which is pretty remarkable.

It’s surprising how popular Hearthstone became! Blizzard initially created a small team to test out ideas for mobile games, and this incredibly successful game came from that experiment. While the initial excitement has calmed down, Blizzard continues to release three new expansions each year to keep its loyal players engaged.

5) Overwatch

Overwatch is a recent success story for Blizzard. The game unexpectedly emerged from the cancellation of Blizzard’s long-in-development project, Titan – originally intended to be a massive online game. Fortunately, Jeff Kaplan and his team were able to use the story and world built for Titan to create one of the best hero shooters since Team Fortress 2.

Blizzard’s new shooting game was a hit with both players and critics. The pre-release test version was incredibly popular, with almost 10 million people trying it out. Players loved the unique characters and the exciting, action-packed gameplay. Blizzard also did a great job of quickly fixing any imbalances. While the game’s loot boxes were a bit of a downside, everything else was outstanding. We’re not going to discuss the sequel, though.

4) StarCraft

It’s almost guaranteed a spot on this list when a video game reaches the level of a national sport. StarCraft, Blizzard’s science fiction strategy game inspired by Warcraft, quickly became far more than just a related title. In fact, televised matches from 1998 are still broadcast in South Korea today.

While incredibly popular, StarCraft also pushed the real-time strategy genre forward. Its three distinct and well-balanced factions were a significant step up from what was typical at the time. Although map editors had appeared in other RTS games before, StarCraft‘s massive fanbase created and shared influential mods, even helping to popularize the tower defense genre. It remains a fantastic and playable game today, just as enjoyable now as it was back in 1998.

3) Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos

Despite everything that makes StarCraft great, Warcraft 3 is Blizzard’s strongest real-time strategy game. I’d even agree with moving it to the very top of this list. It’s truly one of the best strategy games ever made, and surprisingly, it’s perhaps best remembered for its compelling story.

Arthas’s story is remarkably well-done, far surpassing anything else in strategy games at the time. Blizzard significantly expanded the world of Azeroth from Warcraft 2, adding a wealth of detail that paved the way for the series’ evolution into a massive multiplayer online game.

Beyond everything else, Warcraft 3 played a huge role in creating the popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre. Games like League of Legends and Dota 2, as well as all other MOBAs, wouldn’t exist without Warcraft 3 and its Defense of the Ancients mod.

2) World of Warcraft

It’s hard to say anything new about World of Warcraft. Blizzard took the rich world they created in the original Warcraft games and turned it into one of the most popular and welcoming online multiplayer games ever made. This proved to be incredibly profitable for Blizzard, as WoW is by far the best-selling MMO of all time, generating billions of dollars for the company.

World of Warcraft has definitely experienced periods of both great success and challenges. It was most popular in 2010, with 12 million players, just before the release of the Cataclysm expansion. Even now, after over 20 years, the game still has around seven million subscribers.

The game continues to thrive, even after some weaker expansions like Warlords of Draenor and Shadowlands. Players have consistently returned with strong releases like The War Within, showing their continued dedication. And after years of requests, players will soon be able to enjoy player housing, demonstrating that Blizzard still has plenty of innovative ideas.

1) Diablo 2

To be honest, it’s really hard to say which of Blizzard’s top three games is the best. They’re all incredible and stand out as leaders in their genres – truly some of the greatest games ever made. It’s tough to pick a definitive order for them.

Honestly, as a huge fan, I think Diablo 2 is the absolute best in the series, especially after they released the Lord of Destruction expansion. I’ll admit, a lot of that is probably nostalgia! I was able to really sink my teeth into the game when it first came out, spending tons of hours a week exploring Sanctuary, and I know I’m not alone in thinking it’s a masterpiece.

Diablo 2 was a huge success, quickly becoming the best-selling PC game of its time – a record only broken by other games from Blizzard. Players can choose from seven different classes, each offering a unique way to play, and customize them even further with a wide range of skills. The game’s complex item system pioneered the modern “loot” experience found in many games today. Plus, each area is beautifully crafted and visually unique, with enemies that change as you progress, keeping the gameplay exciting.

This is Blizzard’s greatest game, and it’s among the very best in the industry. This isn’t just my opinion – after playing it for countless hours, I know many other players feel the same way.
