While many DC Comics heroes and villains possess incredible powers – from alien abilities to divine strength – not all of them do. Some characters rely on skill instead of superpowers, becoming highly trained martial artists. Mastering these fighting styles takes years of dedication and discipline, and DC’s best fighters often know nearly every form of martial arts. They achieve peak human performance through strength, speed, technique, and sheer fighting ability.
DC Comics boasts a rich history of incredibly skilled and dangerous martial artists, from those proficient in numerous fighting styles to characters capable of defeating opponents with a single touch.
7) Bronze Tiger

Ben Turner, better known as the Bronze Tiger, is a highly skilled and famous assassin. He’s an expert in numerous fighting styles, which he uses to eliminate his targets. Driven to control violent impulses that began in childhood – he committed his first killing at age ten – Turner turned to martial arts. He trained with the renowned Richard Dragon, becoming an incredibly dangerous fighter. Bronze Tiger has consistently proven himself against top-level opponents like Dragon, Deathstroke, and Lady Shiva, and even defeated Batman in practice. Throughout his career, he’s worked as both a law enforcer and a mercenary, often leaving his adversaries severely injured or dead.
6) Batman

Bruce Wayne, better known as Batman, is one of the most skilled fighters in comic books. Driven by the tragedy of his parents’ death, he dedicated himself to mastering every form of combat – a total of 127 martial arts. He sought out the best teachers in the world, including Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva, Ra’s al Ghul, and Wildcat, and even picked up new techniques during his travels in space. Batman is incredibly observant, able to quickly analyze an opponent’s movements and identify their weaknesses. He’s a master of pressure points, capable of disabling or even defeating someone with a single touch. Throughout his career, Batman has used his exceptional fighting skills to overcome dangerous enemies like the League of Assassins, Deathstroke, and Ra’s al Ghul.
5) Orphan

Cassandra Cain, known as Orphan, had a unique and dangerous upbringing. Her parents were two of the world’s most skilled assassins, and they trained her from birth to be a lethal weapon. While she became a master of martial arts, they neglected to teach her basic skills like reading or speaking. Instead, Cassandra learned to expertly read body language, allowing her to anticipate her opponents’ every move and defeat them with a single, precise strike. Joining the Bat-Family as the second Batgirl, she honed her skills further with guidance from Batman, Oracle, and Black Canary, eventually even surpassing and defeating both of her parents in combat. With continued growth and experience, Cassandra is destined to become an even more formidable fighter.
4) Lady Shiva

Lady Shiva, also known as Sandra Wu-San, is widely considered the most dangerous assassin alive. She’s honed her body into a perfect weapon and is a master of every fighting style imaginable, even those long forgotten. Initially an enemy of martial artist Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva is renowned as one of the greatest fighters in the world. Her signature move, the Leopard Blow, is incredibly powerful – capable of breaking both stone and bones – and she’s also skilled at instantly incapacitating or killing opponents by targeting pressure points. Because of her skill, many top martial artists – including Batman, Black Canary, and Cassandra Cain – have trained under her, as have all members of the League of Assassins.
3) Black Canary

Black Canary, also known as Dinah Lance, is an incredibly skilled martial artist, even though she has a powerful sonic scream. She’s been trained by legendary fighters like her mother and Wildcat, mastering virtually every fighting style imaginable. Black Canary can react to attacks with incredible speed, down to the fraction of a second, and is capable of delivering devastating blows – she can even incapacitate or defeat opponents with a single strike. Batman considers her a better fighter than himself, and her impressive wins against opponents like Cheshire, Lady Shiva, and Wonder Woman prove he’s right.
2) Richard Dragon

Richard Dragon, a renowned fighting instructor who has trained many of DC’s top heroes, is considered one of the most skilled martial artists in the DC Universe. He’s a master of all fighting styles, having used his skills as a vigilante, thief, and spy before becoming a teacher. He’s mentored iconic heroes like Black Canary, Green Arrow, Catwoman, Nightwing, Question, Huntress, and even Batman – famously helping Batman recover from his spinal injury after the fight with Bane. Richard consistently defeats other highly skilled fighters like Lady Shiva and Bronze Tiger. What sets him apart is his mastery of chi, which enhances his focus and strength in combat.
1) Karate Kid

Karate Kid, whose real name is Val Ammor, is considered the greatest martial artist in the DC Universe. As a member of the Legion of Superheroes, he’s the team’s most accomplished fighter, having spent his life perfecting every combat style known throughout the galaxy and beyond, up to the 31st century. Remarkably, despite being a normal human without any superpowers, Karate Kid consistently defeats incredibly powerful opponents using his martial arts skills. He’s capable of incredible feats, like taking down massive monsters with a single chop, destroying meteors and stopping earthquakes with his kicks, and even holding his own against powerful heroes like Supergirl and Superboy. Superman himself ranks Karate Kid as a significantly more skilled fighter than even Batman!
