John Constantine appears to be just an ordinary magician in the DC universe, often seeming like a down-on-his-luck nobody. However, he’s far more capable than he looks. Constantine possesses remarkable magical skills and spells that make him incredibly powerful. Despite other characters seeming stronger, they’d be no match for his abilities. He’s a true force to be reckoned with, even if he doesn’t fit the typical powerful hero mold, meaning many characters from both Marvel and DC wouldn’t stand a chance against him.
Whether it’s raw strength, advanced technology, or exceptional skill, here are seven comic book characters who wouldn’t stand a chance against John Constantine.
7) Booster Gold
Even though Booster Gold appears stronger, Constantine would easily defeat him. Booster’s overconfidence would be his undoing – he’d underestimate Constantine and quickly fall victim to his tricks. Constantine could use simple illusions and even a little fire magic to take Booster down faster than both Guy Gardner and Batman could. Ultimately, Booster’s biggest weakness is his own ego.
6) The Hulk
This fight would come down to intelligence versus strength, but Constantine would likely win against the Hulk. He might even be able to separate Bruce Banner’s soul from the Hulk’s, which would drastically change the battle. Even in a straight-up fight, Constantine could use illusions or invisibility to create opportunities to cast powerful spells. Ultimately, Constantine has too many advantages for the Hulk to overcome.
5) Deadman
A hero who can possess people wouldn’t be able to defeat an exorcist who’s willing to risk everything. Boston Brand, despite being a powerful ghost superhero, likely wouldn’t stand a chance against Constantine, who uses magic and supernatural tactics. Luckily, it’s unlikely they’ll ever fight, as they generally get along well.
4) Hawkeye
Even though Hawkeye is an incredibly skilled marksman, possibly the best in the universe, he’d struggle against someone who uses magic. While Hawkeye would initially see Constantine as an easy target, Constantine’s protective and defensive spells would allow him to win. Hawkeye would likely give up before the fight truly ended, demonstrating that raw skill isn’t always enough against a master of the mystical arts. Still, it would be an entertaining fight to watch!
3) The Question
When it comes to trench coats in DC Comics, Constantine and the Question are the clear standouts. But in a fight, Constantine would definitely win. While the Question is capable in a brawl, he often loses, and he’s at a major disadvantage against magic. They might be evenly matched in hand-to-hand combat, but the Question doesn’t have any magical abilities – Constantine does, and that gives him the edge.
Constantine’s mind control abilities, combined with the unusual circumstances, leave the Question completely at a disadvantage. He’s faced the supernatural before, but this situation is far outside his area of expertise, and he doesn’t stand a chance.
2) Iron Man
Constantine doesn’t need to magically destroy Iron Man’s armor. He could easily incapacitate him with a curse, leaving Stark helpless and defeated.
It wouldn’t take much to appease Constantine – just three cigarettes would do the trick. Despite being incredibly intelligent, even Stark couldn’t outsmart the Hellblazer.

Jason Todd is self-assured, but he’s never faced anyone like John Constantine. Even with Batman’s warnings, Constantine has plenty of magic that could shatter Jason’s unstable mind. Constantine can easily deflect physical attacks and respond with powerful spells, like bursts of fire.
With a little bit of mental manipulation, Constantine has Jason completely under control. He’d often wake Jason up in strange situations, disarming him just for his own amusement, and that would likely be all it takes for Red Hood to give up.
