Marvel movies often take their time introducing characters, but it’s usually pretty clear how important they’ll be to the story. In the first season finale of Loki, Loki and his variant, Sylvie, finally reach the place where they believe the person in charge of the Time Variance Authority is hiding. A man appears, but he deliberately keeps his identity a secret, only calling himself “He Who Remains.” For viewers who don’t know the backstory, he could seem like a completely new character simply meant to cause trouble.
It wasn’t until the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that Marvel officially revealed the villain played by Jonathan Majors as Kang, a powerful and well-known enemy of the Avengers in the comic books. However, not all Marvel characters have had such clear introductions. Here are seven significant Marvel characters you might be surprised to learn were already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
7) Doc Samson

Even though The Incredible Hulk hasn’t been a major focus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks like things are changing. Characters like the Red Hulk, Betty Ross, and Samuel Sterns (The Leader) are returning. Interestingly, Leonard Samson, who was Betty’s boyfriend in the original 2008 movie, won’t be appearing. This is a little unusual because he’s a significant character in the comics, gaining his own powers and often clashing with the Hulk.
6) Ghost Rider

The idea of a multiverse means almost anything from Marvel’s past could now be considered official canon. But one show particularly deserves to be fully integrated into the main storyline: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Originally connected to the big Marvel movies, the show developed its own unique direction and introduced compelling characters like Robbie Reyes, also known as Ghost Rider. It seems likely that Reyes, and the earlier Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, will soon play a role in the larger Marvel universe.
5) Miles Morales

Currently, Peter Parker is the only Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie Spider-Man: No Way Home even brought together three different versions of Peter Parker to fight a team of villains. However, there’s a hint that another Spider-Person might appear in the future. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Donald Glover’s character, Aaron Davis, mentions his nephew needs protection – a clear reference to Miles Morales, who is the main character in Sony’s Spider-Verse movies.
4) Silk

Outside of his adventures as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker is a student at Midtown School of Science and Technology. In the movie Homecoming, he competes on the school’s decathlon team with his love interest, Liz Allan. Another team member, Cindy Moon, doesn’t appear much in the film, which is notable considering her significant backstory in the comics. In the comics, Cindy Moon is also bitten by a radioactive spider and eventually becomes the superhero Silk.
3) Captain Britian

With so much happening in Avengers: Endgame, it’s easy to miss details and hidden references. During a scene where Captain America travels back in time, he reconnects with Peggy Carter. He’s distracted by seeing her and doesn’t notice she’s discussing a missing agent named Braddock. In Marvel comics, several characters share that last name, but Brian Braddock – also known as Captain Britain – is the most well-known.
2) Union Jack

Captain America forms a special team called the Howling Commandos to fight HYDRA. While Bucky Barnes and Dum Dum Dugan are well-known members, James Falsworth is a crucial part of the group too. In the original comics, this character later becomes the British superhero Union Jack and teams up with the Invaders.
1) The Living Tribunal

The Living Tribunal is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel multiverse, but hasn’t directly appeared in any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films yet. We’ve seen hints of him, though – Baron Mordo uses a staff named after him, and a statue resembling the Living Tribunal appears in Thor: Love and Thunder. It seems he quietly works to maintain balance across the multiverse.
