7 Incredible Actors The MCU Completely Wasted

Starting from 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has flourished into one of the most prosperous film franchises ever made. The transformation of Marvel Comics’ tales and figures onto both television and cinema screens in live-action has yielded immense profit, garnering massive popularity and substantial praise from critics. With its growth, so has its viewership, leading to the attraction of well-known actors. Consequently, Marvel has been successful in recruiting big names for roles within the franchise, with accomplished artists portraying Marvel heroes, antagonists, and secondary characters across the MCU‘s films and series.

Despite boasting an array of exceptionally skilled actors in its films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hasn’t always made optimal use of their talents. On several occasions, the franchise has underutilized top-notch acting talent by casting respected actors for brief roles or limiting their opportunities to showcase their full acting prowess. While the MCU can pride itself on having some remarkable actors, it is not always accurate to say that it fully leverages their abilities.

1) Cate Blanchett

Ragnarok” is known for its humor within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), yet it seems to have underutilized one of its most noteworthy additions to the cast. Cate Blanchett played Hela, the Asgardian Goddess of Death, who broke Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and challenged for Asgard’s throne. Although Blanchett is a versatile actor capable of delivering both drama, action, and comedy, her character was tragically short-lived as Hela was killed off at the end of the movie. Casting such a talented actor only to eliminate their character quickly seemed unusual, and it felt like a missed opportunity to fully utilize Blanchett’s talent.

2) Tilda Swinton

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Tilda Swinton’s casting as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange was met with controversy due to accusations of whitewashing the franchise’s representation of Marvel characters. Swinton portrayed the mentor of the title character, but her talents were largely underutilized as her character appeared to have been killed off in the climactic battle of Doctor Strange. However, she made a brief return for a scene set in 2012 in Avengers: Endgame.

3) Christian Bale

Alongside being acclaimed as one of the most romantic movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Thor: Love and Thunder also drew criticism for being one of its most underwhelming films. Key among these disappointments was Christian Bale’s portrayal of Gorr the God Butcher, an eagerly awaited villain who had the potential to overturn the entire power structure of the MCU. Regrettably, this didn’t occur, and while Bale delivered a commendable performance with the script he received, Gorr’s stay in the MCU was brief, appearing only once. This left many feeling that his remarkable acting talent was wasted in a one-dimensional role that lacked depth and was confined to just one film.

4) Mads Mikkelsen

In the 2016 movie “Doctor Strange,” Tilda Swinton wasn’t the only talented actor who felt somewhat sidelined. Mads Mikkelsen was brought in to portray the villain, Kaecilius, a sorcerer drawn towards the powerful darkness of Dormammu. Despite being an exceptional performer, Mikkelsen’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) seemed quite one-dimensional, limiting his ability to showcase his full acting potential. Consequently, his performance fell short of expectations, and it was particularly disheartening when Kaecilius met his end, as fans had hoped for more from such a talented actor.

5) Christopher Eccleston

In a nutshell, while Christopher Eccleston is most recognized for his portrayal of the Ninth Doctor in “Doctor Who,” he’s a highly esteemed British actor who has shone brightly on both stage and screen throughout his illustrious career. However, some argue that his performance as Malekith in “Thor: The Dark World” was disappointing, as the character seemed underdeveloped with limited dialogue. This portrayal might not have done justice to Eccleston’s exceptional abilities, as it appeared the Marvel Cinematic Universe missed an opportunity to showcase his talents more effectively.

6) Walton Goggins

After many years of playing numerous characters and gaining recognition for his skill as an actor, Walton Goggins is now being acknowledged as one of Hollywood’s top talents. In 2018, he made his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in “Ant-Man and the Wasp” as Sonny Burch, a secondary antagonist and small-time crook with grand ambitions. However, given Goggins’ immense talent, it seems like a missed opportunity to cast him in such an apparently minor role, as it may be challenging for the MCU to develop Sonny Burch into a more significant character within the franchise.

7) Bill Skarsgård

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the movie “Eternals,” which unfortunately became one of the few Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions to incur losses. However, it wasn’t just the budget that was squandered here. This film marked Bill Skarsgård’s first appearance within the MCU, donning the role of Kro, a deviant on the hunt for the Eternals. Unfortunately, Skarsgård’s captivating acting talents were largely concealed under motion capture technology, which was already regrettable. However, Kro’s limited screen time in the movie took this waste of potential to another level. Given Skarsgård’s exceptional versatility in portraying both chilling villains and heartfelt heroes, it’s hard to deny that Kro represented a significant squandering of an exceptionally gifted actor’s talents.
