The Lord of the Rings movies are famous for their incredible fantasy world, and rightly so, but they aren’t the only great examples of the genre. Peter Jackson successfully brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved epic to life, captivating audiences with a stunning depiction of Middle-earth. While the Lord of the Rings trilogy is widely considered a masterpiece, it was later followed by film adaptations of The Hobbit, and the story has continued to appear in various other formats.
While Lord of the Rings is a classic and hugely influential fantasy film, other movies have arguably surpassed it in certain areas. Some handle specific fantasy elements more effectively, and others have reached a wider audience. Over time, a few films have even managed to outdo Lord of the Rings in various respects.
7) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Although it’s hard to argue that the Pirates of the Caribbean films are superior to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the first Pirates movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, excels in certain areas. It boasts a memorable and engaging cast, and cleverly blends supernatural elements with a compelling historical setting. Unlike the often-serious tone of Lord of the Rings, The Curse of the Black Pearl also effectively uses humor to lighten the mood and keep things entertaining.
6) The Green Knight (2021)

Though often overlooked, The Green Knight is a fantastic fantasy film that does things differently from other movies in the genre. It’s set in a medieval world similar to The Lord of the Rings, but it’s more focused on inner thoughts and explores deeper meanings. While it might not have the same widespread popularity or immersive feel as The Lord of the Rings, The Green Knight offers a fresh and creative take on classic fantasy elements.
5) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

The Harry Potter movies are consistently enjoyable to rewatch, and the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, is often considered even better than Lord of the Rings. After seven films building towards a massive showdown, it delivers a truly epic conclusion, featuring a spectacular fantasy battle. In terms of creating a believable world and providing satisfying emotional closure, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is a strong contender against even the most memorable scenes from Lord of the Rings.
4) A Monster Calls (2016)

Many fantastic fantasy movies get overlooked, and A Monster Calls is a prime example. It’s a deeply moving story about a boy coping with his mother’s serious illness, who finds solace in a giant, talking tree. Unlike epic fantasies like Lord of the Rings, this film offers a unique and emotional experience. While it’s hard to compare the two, A Monster Calls is a truly well-made film that stands out among others in the fantasy genre.
3) The Princess Bride (1987)

While many fantasy films remain enjoyable over time, few have had the lasting impact of The Princess Bride. This beloved classic cleverly uses familiar fairy tale elements to create a charming romantic fantasy filled with humor. It has all the ingredients of a great fantasy adventure – exciting sword fights, memorable villains, and a quirky team of heroes – which contribute to its enduring appeal. Though its story isn’t as grand in scope as The Lord of the Rings, it more than compensates with its imaginative and original concepts.
2) Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is a celebrated dark fantasy film. It draws on the unsettling elements of classic fairy tales to create a haunting story filled with memorable creatures, all set against the backdrop of a turbulent period in history. The film features one of the most frightening villains in fantasy cinema, and its exploration of childhood innocence makes it a deeply moving and surprisingly powerful film – arguably even more impactful than The Lord of the Rings.
1) The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Despite many film adaptations, the 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz remains the best. It’s remarkably timeless and a landmark achievement in fantasy cinema. The way it vividly creates the world of Oz is unparalleled, especially considering the special effects technology available at the time. While The Lord of the Rings films may have more modern effects, The Wizard of Oz remains the most iconic fantasy movie ever made – it’s just a truly wonderful film.
