While Marvel’s iconic characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America are widely known and loved, it’s worth noting that lesser-known characters are equally captivating in various aspects. Given the extensive roster of remarkable characters that Marvel boasts, there are many who should garner much more attention. These characters possess extraordinary abilities, intriguing backgrounds, and boundless potential, yet their popularity hasn’t soared as high as it could be. Part of this may be due to their infrequent appearances in comics, but there are several other contributing factors at play. Regardless of what hinders these characters, they certainly warrant more recognition among fans.
These seven intriguing Marvel characters, ranging from the sinister to the heroic, might not yet receive the recognition they deserve. Here’s hoping their popularity grows in the future!
1) Cypher/Revelation
As Cypher/Revelation’s named event approaches, there’s a sense that he is poised for a resurgence in popularity. For years, Cypher has been seen as one of the least powerful and most underappreciated X-Men characters. It’s surprising to think that the man who can understand any language could be destined to become Apocalypse’s successor. It’s exciting to see him making a comeback, even if his new role may lean towards villainy.
Observing Doug finally receive the acknowledgment he’s earned after four decades of dedication, despite the character potentially causing issues for all mutants, promises to be an enjoyable spectacle. With Warlock standing by his side, the Age of Revelation is likely to pose a horrific challenge for mutants, but it should make for intriguing reading for us.
2) Fantomex
As a captivated cinema-goer, I must confess that among the array of mutant characters I’ve encountered in recent years, Fantomex stands out as one of the most intriguingly enigmatic. A remarkable fusion of intellect and raw power, he boasts an uncanny ability to transform himself and pilot a vessel with mere brainpower – a talent that only adds to his allure and mystery.
To top it off, his mastery of marksmanship is nothing short of extraordinary, and coupled with his designation as Weapon XIII, it’s no wonder that Fantomex has earned a spot as one of the coolest mutants since the turn of the millennium.
A significant aspect contributing to Fantomex’s allure and distinctiveness sometimes proves to be a disadvantage for him. Crafted by Grant Morrison, Fantomex exhibits an intricate combination of powers and their application. Due to the abundance of Morrison’s inventive ingenuity within him, Fantomex either appears captivatingly cool or somewhat undercooked, even though he excels in certain roles when brought into play. In summary, Fantomex is a fantastic character that deserves more recognition.
3) Maximus
For years, Maximus of the Inhumans was absent from the scene until quite recently, and yet he remains the sly, cunning antagonist we can’t help but loathe. Since the time of the Inhumans at Marvel, many of them have been out of sight. While Maximus may not be the most imposing villain, it’s hard to overlook his impact in the roles he has played. As a character who often sparks trouble for our heroes, his significance is undeniable.
His main disadvantage is being frequently compared to Loki. While some perceive him as a lesser version of Loki, he carves out a unique niche for himself in narratives and performs flawlessly with that annoying smirk on his face. He had the potential to be one of the top villains of the past decade, but somehow fell short. However, with the growing adoration Imperial is receiving, this trend may soon reverse.
4) Jessica Jones
Since Jessica Jones made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there’s been a noticeable absence of her character, following the conclusion of both her show and comic book series. Created by Brian Michael Bendis, she stands out as one of his most acclaimed and renowned creations. Her groundbreaking comic series, Alias, was a massive success and served as the foundation for her television show. Moreover, her marriage to Luke Cage garnered significant attention. Since then, she’s been largely absent from the spotlight.
Among the limited comic characters significantly elevated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s clear that Jessica is overdue for another appearance. Although her live-action version has resurfaced, it’s also high time for her television series, “Alias,” to make a reappearance. Even though Jessica remains popular, her fan base craves more of her story. With the current momentum, this could be an ideal opportunity to offer her a fresh boost as well.
5) Rachel Summers
One could readily assert that Rachel Summers stands among the most outstanding and charismatic members of the X-Men, effortlessly balancing her impressive feats with an undeniable coolness. After inheriting the Phoenix Force from her mother, she even held her own against the formidable Beyonder in their past encounters. However, it seems her current roles have been relegated to secondary stories within spinoff X-Men titles. Despite this, it’s clear that her extraordinary character, developed during Chris Claremont’s tenure on X-Men, merits a more significant presence in the main series.
Sharing leadership on the “Excalibur” project, Rachel is well on her way to honoring her parents’ legacy. Her exceptional control over the Phoenix surpassing her mother suggests she is worthy of leading and becoming a consistent character in either major X-Men comics, similar to the Giant Sized team.
6) Mania
It’s surprising that the introduction of Andrea Benton as a sidekick for Agent Venom didn’t generate more buzz, but it seems that wasn’t the case. Known as Mania during their shared title, she eventually received a share of the symbiote, making her a fitting sidekick. It’s worth noting that despite the abundance of Venom-related content, there was no spin-off series for Andrea. Given her later transformation into Scream, it seems like a missed opportunity to not continue exploring her character within the Venom universe. While managing Andrea as a sidekick could potentially be complicated, she was a character brimming with potential that wasn’t fully realized. However, Agent Venom isn’t one of the most renowned Venom storylines.
7) Silk
In recent times, one of Marvel’s intriguing spider-characters, Cindy Moon, also known as Silk, has been somewhat underutilized. Sharing a common history with Peter Parker as a classmate who was bitten by the same spider that bit him, she developed her own unique powers – the ability to produce webs naturally and retractable claws to sharpen them. While Silk seems ideally suited for the Spider-Man universe, she has been overshadowed by Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen in recent narratives.
Cindy certainly deserves to be on par with Peter, Miles, and Gwen as the principal Spider-characters. Given that she’s currently starring in her own Spider-Gwen series, it seems she’s bound for even greater opportunities. Moreover, her unique design makes her a standout character, which suggests she enjoys a high level of popularity among fans. In essence, we can’t wait to see more of Silk!
