For years, Marvel has been the top-selling publisher of superhero comics, and the popularity of its characters exploded with the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The MCU dominated pop culture until 2019, bringing Marvel’s stories to a wider audience. While the movies didn’t always perfectly follow the comics, they consistently excelled at recreating the characters’ costumes. Fans frequently praised the films for their detailed and comic-accurate costumes, which significantly enhanced the overall experience.
Longtime comic book fans have always known the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t great at faithfully recreating costumes from the comics – they usually just did the bare minimum, something few others even attempted. Given the amazing designs in the comics and where the MCU is heading, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see some of those iconic looks in the movies, which is a real shame. Here are seven Marvel comic costumes that probably won’t ever make it to the big screen.
7) Green Goblin’s Classic Costume

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’ve always thought the Green Goblin is one of the best villains, and a key part of Spider-Man’s story. And honestly, that costume – the purple suit, boots, gloves, even the little pouch and hat – is iconic! It’s just so cool, and we haven’t seen anything quite like it in the movies yet. Seeing Norman Osborn show up in Spider-Man: No Way Home was awesome, but it was a real letdown that he didn’t wear the classic suit. The MCU usually nails the costumes, so I really expected it. It’s starting to feel like we’ll never see that amazing look on screen, and that’s honestly a bit heartbreaking for a longtime fan like me.
6) Rogue’s Original Costume

Rogue is most famous for her costume designed by Jim Lee, which first appeared in X-Men (Vol. 2) #1 and became widely known through X-Men: The Animated Series. This is the outfit most people picture when they think of the character, and it’s likely the one we’ll see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the X-Men have had many great costumes, Rogue’s classic yellow and green look with the leather jacket isn’t actually my favorite. I’ve always preferred her original costume—a simple green and white design that really suited her. It was reintroduced in the late 1990s and has been updated and used in various forms since then. Though it’s a great look, the MCU will almost certainly go with the costume popularized in the 1990s.
5) Cable’s Year 2000 Costume

As a big X-Men fan, I was revisiting Chris Claremont’s run from around 2000, and it’s a bit of a hidden gem, costume-wise. Honestly, I feel like it doesn’t get the love it deserves, so we’ll probably never see those designs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While there were some cool looks, Cable’s costume from that era really stood out to me. Most people associate Cable with all the ’90s gear – pouches, guns, the whole nine yards – and that’s what we’ll inevitably get, just like in Deadpool 2. But the 2000 version was actually a more classic, streamlined superhero outfit, a real departure for him. In fact, his late ’90s costume was also a great, more traditional look, and I doubt we’ll ever see that one either. It’s a shame, because I think the 2000 costume was superior, but it seems the MCU is set on the ’90s aesthetic.
4) The Actual Iron Spider Armor

A common topic among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans is Spider-Man’s connection to Iron Man. His initial two movie suits were designed by Tony Stark, with the second essentially being the MCU’s take on the Iron Spider armor. While called the Iron Spider suit, it doesn’t resemble the much better version from the comics. The comic book Iron Spider armor combines Iron Man’s color scheme with Spider-Man’s clean, straightforward design, resulting in a striking look. Sadly, this impressive costume likely won’t appear in a movie.
3) Black Widow’s Villain Costume

The Black Widow character first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Iron Man 2, but she was quite different from her original comic book portrayal. Initially, Natasha Romanoff was depicted as a Russian spy—a dangerous and seductive figure—who even fought Iron Man. Her early costume was iconic: a black dress, fur scarf, gloves reaching to the elbows, and a hat with a veil. This version of Black Widow, from the 1960s comics, is a far cry from the MCU’s interpretation, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see that original look on screen.
2) Wolverine’s Black and Grey X-Force Costume

Wolverine is known for his many costumes, and the recent Deadpool/Wolverine movie showcased a few of them. However, one notable look was missing: the black and grey suit he wore while leading X-Force. This costume perfectly matched the team’s secretive, black ops style and made Wolverine particularly intimidating. It’s a great fit for his character – stealthy and suggesting a lethal intent – but it’s less of a traditional superhero outfit. It’s more of a suit designed for killing, and it’s unlikely the Marvel Cinematic Universe will fully explore that darker side of Wolverine to the point where this costume would be necessary.
1) The Hawkeye’s Purple Masked Costume

Let’s be honest, the Hawkeye costumes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have always been… underwhelming. They aren’t bad, and they’re technically faithful to the comics – the original was inspired by the Ultimate Hawkeye look, and subsequent versions followed suit to match the films – but they just lack any real visual punch. It’s a shame, because the comics had a truly iconic Hawkeye costume – that classic purple mask he wore for years. In my opinion, it’s one of the best superhero designs ever, with a perfect use of color and just a fantastic overall look. And I have a feeling, even with the expected reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars, we’ll never see that costume on screen, and that’s something that genuinely bothers me as a fan.
