Wolverine is renowned as a master of combat. He defeats opponents with incredible savagery, making him one of the most dangerous fighters in the Marvel Universe. Throughout his time with the X-Men, many have sought him out – hiring, training, or even controlling him – to eliminate their enemies. Equipped with immense strength, virtually indestructible bones, razor-sharp claws, and a remarkable healing factor, Wolverine is a force to be reckoned with. Once he targets someone, escaping him is extremely difficult.
Wolverine is incredibly dangerous and someone you definitely don’t want to cross, but he’s not unbeatable. His quick temper and attitude often cause conflicts with other heroes. Today, we’ll explore seven superheroes who have defeated him – even if it was just once, they’ve all managed to overcome Wolverine in battle. While he may have won against some of them previously, these heroes have all proven they can defeat him.
7) Hulk

It’s well known that Wolverine first appeared as an enemy of the Hulk, and their conflict has resurfaced many times since. Usually, though, these encounters result in the Hulk easily defeating Wolverine. While Wolverine can always recover from his injuries, that doesn’t help him win against someone with the Hulk’s immense strength – someone who can shatter mountains. Wolverine has occasionally managed to win, but even those victories usually leave him badly beaten and needing to heal. He might be incredibly skilled, but he’s simply not as powerful as the Hulk.
6) Black Panther

During the 2013 Wolverine comic book series, Black Panther and Wolverine had a fight shortly after Wolverine lost his healing ability. Normally, they’d be evenly matched, but without his power, Wolverine was easily defeated. Black Panther focused more on trying to de-escalate the situation than actually hurting Wolverine, and could have ended the fight at any time due to his better skills and Wolverine’s vulnerability. Wolverine fought only to prove his worth and protect Storm’s reputation, but Black Panther defeated him both physically and emotionally, making it a particularly crushing loss.
5) Rogue

In X-Men #103 (1991), Rogue and Wolverine engaged in a fierce battle throughout a destroyed city created by the Danger Room. Interestingly, Rogue had temporarily lost her powers. Wolverine pursued Rogue through the ruins, but she outsmarted his greater strength and healing ability. She managed to restrain him and even positioned weapons at his vital points. Wolverine broke free, and they ended up facing each other with blades pressed against each other’s throats. Rogue called his bluff, threatening to stab him and prove she still had some power. Wolverine conceded defeat, revealing the entire fight was a test to determine if she was fit to become the X-Men’s new field leader.
4) Gambit

Following our conversation about Mrs. X, let’s recall the time her husband, known for throwing cards, decisively defeated Wolverine. Gambit had just joined the team in Uncanny X-Men #273, and Wolverine wanted to see what he was capable of in the Danger Room. They were fairly equal opponents – Gambit was faster, while Wolverine was stronger – but Gambit ultimately won by cleverly distracting Logan and overwhelming him in a fight. He even made things worse by winning without using his powers, and confidently told Wolverine he’d easily defeat him in a real battle. It was a clear victory for Gambit.
3) Spider-Man

Spider-Man and Wolverine have clashed many times, and while Spider-Man is generally stronger and faster, Wolverine’s relentless fighting style makes him a tough opponent. Spider-Man’s true strength lies in his intelligence and strategy – he doesn’t just rely on brute force. A great example of this is in Marvel Team-Up #1 (2004), where Spider-Man effectively neutralizes Wolverine by limiting his movement. Wolverine’s claws can cut through almost anything, but Spider-Man excels at controlling the battlefield and preventing Wolverine from using his primary weapon effectively.
2) Daredevil

Daredevil is an incredibly skilled fighter, but ultimately he’s still human. In a fair fight, he wouldn’t stand a chance against someone like Wolverine. However, Daredevil is always ready to face any opponent and usually wins. In this case, Wolverine was manipulated by The Hand – a common occurrence for him – and sent with a group of ninjas to fight Daredevil. While Daredevil easily dealt with the ninjas, you’d expect Wolverine’s healing ability to make him a tough opponent. Surprisingly, it didn’t matter. Daredevil simply hit Wolverine with a dumbbell, causing him to fall onto the sword of an already unconscious assassin. It’s an incredibly silly turn of events, and that’s exactly why it’s so great.
1) Cyclops

The conflict between Cyclops and Wolverine is famous among X-Men fans. They’re always arguing – Cyclops likes to be the leader, and Wolverine refuses to take orders from anyone except, as he puts it, a strong woman. It’s no surprise they fight often, but surprisingly, Cyclops won their very first encounter. In Uncanny X-Men #127, Cyclops didn’t just defeat Wolverine, he dominated the whole team. Wolverine tried to attack Scott out of frustration, but Cyclops skillfully used his optic blasts and cutting remarks to keep him at bay.
Wolverine fights with wild, animalistic strength, but Cyclops relies on careful planning. During their fight, Cyclops cleverly used his surroundings – throwing dirt in Wolverine’s eyes, bouncing his optic blasts off Colossus, and even using Wolverine’s power against him. This showed that strategy can overcome brute force. While Wolverine is faster and stronger, Cyclops excels at thinking ahead and positioning himself, demonstrating why he’s the leader. It proved that even though Wolverine is incredibly skilled, he doesn’t excel at everything.
