7 Marvel Heroes Who Are One Step From Being the Villain

Many Marvel superheroes walk a fine line between good and evil, and it often only takes a single choice to turn them into villains. Unlike DC Comics, which initially presented nearly flawless heroes, Marvel focused on creating characters with flaws – heroes who were relatable and villains who evoked sympathy. This approach means that in any story, a hero could easily fall from grace, or a villain could find redemption, highlighting how quickly circumstances or a single mistake can change a person’s path.

These seven Marvel heroes are dangerously close to turning into the villains of their own tales.

7) Deadpool

The Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe miniseries demonstrates how quickly Deadpool can snap and become completely unhinged. While he’s always willing to accept any job, targeting anyone – good or bad – Deadpool does occasionally operate with a sense of morality, or at least, as much as his unstable mind allows.

Deadpool has always been unpredictable, and you never know what he’ll do next. What’s truly frightening about the story Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is that it explores what would happen if he actually became completely focused and rational. Once he understood the reality of his existence, everyone was in danger.

6) Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch is arguably the Marvel hero most likely to become a villain, and she’s actually done so several times. Wanda Maximoff has a history of mental health struggles that have led her to act as a villain on multiple occasions, most notably in the storylines Avengers Disassembled, House of M, and M-Day.

Currently, Scarlet Witch has forcefully claimed the title of Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics. She’s been fighting to keep this position, even though powerful entities called the Vishanti refused to endorse her. This is understandable, considering Wanda has nearly caused global destruction multiple times and has always struggled with the potential for darkness within herself.

5) Cyclops

Cyclops made a serious mistake, but it wasn’t entirely his fault. During the ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ event, he attempted to improve the world, but his methods escalated when the Avengers intervened. He ultimately went too far, tragically killing Professor X, and was imprisoned as a result.

This isn’t the first time Cyclops has pushed boundaries, and it likely won’t be the last. During the ‘Schism’ storyline, he instructed a young mutant to kill several people, believing it was necessary to save others. This pattern of behavior has, over time, made his mutant team act more like a military force, similar to Magneto’s approach.

4) Iron Man

Iron Man isn’t always a hero. He’s gone bad before, bent the rules, and even worked with the government while being a bit of a troublemaker. One major turn to the dark side happened in the ‘Crossing’ storyline, which revealed he’d secretly been a villain working for Kang all along. But even before that, he’d come close to crossing the line and becoming a villain.

In the storyline Demon in a Bottle, Iron Man nearly made disastrous mistakes while wearing his suit and struggling with substance abuse. Later, in Armor Wars, he started attacking other heroes who were using technology he believed they’d stolen, which led to conflict with the government. Although he fought on the side of the law during the Civil War, his behavior was arguably more problematic than Captain America’s. As part of the Illuminati, Iron Man was consistently the most reckless member, constantly teetering on the edge of villainy.

3) Venom

I remember when Venom first showed up in Marvel – it’s crazy to think he actually started as kind of a hero, secretly controlling Spider-Man! But Peter eventually got rid of the alien symbiote, and that’s when things changed. It bonded with Eddie Brock and became Spider-Man’s biggest enemy for years. Now, Venom is more of an antihero, walking that line between good and bad, and honestly, he could easily slip back into being a full-on villain at any moment.

Venom’s history shows a pattern of shifting between good and evil. While sometimes a protector – like when bonded with Eddie Brock, Flash Thompson, or Mary Jane Watson – it has also been incredibly dangerous, as seen when Mac Gargan wore the symbiote and became a killer. This unpredictability is why the government maintains a team specifically to counter symbiote threats, as Venom can turn hostile at any moment.

2) Moon Knight

People often compare Moon Knight to Batman, but there’s a key difference: Batman operates from the shadows, avoiding lethal force. Moon Knight, on the other hand, intentionally stands out in his white costume and is willing to kill to stop criminals. This willingness to use deadly force is why the police often don’t appreciate his involvement.

I’ve been really enjoying the recent Moon Knight comics! It’s hilarious how the police are starting to rely on Mister Knight – as long as Moon Knight himself, or one of his other personalities, is around to keep things in check. It’s also interesting because even Captain America doesn’t fully trust him, and you can see why – Moon Knight is always walking a fine line between hero and villain, and it doesn’t take much to push him over the edge.

1) The Punisher

Okay, let’s talk about the Punisher. He’s a fascinating, but deeply troubled character. At his core, he is a murderer, plain and simple. Now, he justifies it by targeting criminals the system fails to punish, especially those with money and influence. But when you stack him up against someone like Captain America – a hero he genuinely respects – the contrast is stark. Cap despises the Punisher, and rightfully so, because Frank Castle has crossed a line. It really highlights just how far gone he is, even if his motivations are… understandable, on some level.

Recently, the Punisher took over the Hand, a powerful organization, intending to control their actions. However, his methods became so extreme that the Avengers and Doctor Strange felt the only solution was to kill him, believing he wouldn’t stop his violent path. This demonstrates that the Punisher crossed a line long ago, despite his belief that he’s still doing good.
