Year after year, Marvel delivers fresh content for viewers, providing a wealth of options to dive into. Although not all films and series have been box-office sensations, there have undeniably been many triumphs throughout this journey. What’s particularly intriguing is the large number of characters that have been presented (or hinted at) only to be seemingly abandoned later on. It’s unclear whether Marvel was gauging audience interest or if these characters didn’t fit long-term into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). For fans, however, the abrupt disappearance of their favorite characters remains a source of disappointment.
Over time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has grown significantly, leading creators to occasionally streamline the cast by writing off certain characters. This was evident in Thor’s movies as several of his Asgardian friends and family succumbed to threats. Although this is a drastic example, it reflects a trend that spans the entire Marvel Universe. Regrettably, while some departures are thoughtfully explained, others lack an explanation for their absence or disappearance. However, this ambiguity leaves room for optimism as we anticipate seeing these characters again in future projects.
1) Doc Samson (Ty Burrell)
Last Seen: The Incredible Hulk
It’s understandable that not every minor character will have a substantial plot or significance in a series, but when certain names like Doc Samson are mentioned, fans often jump to conclusions about a deeper connection. First appearing in the MCU during The Incredible Hulk, Doc Samson immediately sparked speculation among fans that we might encounter some form of Leonard Samson later on. In the comics, he’s one of many characters exposed to Gamma radiation; however, his storyline differs significantly from others. Since then, he’s undergone various changes in his professional associations.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Leonard Samson is initially presented as Betty Ross’ new work partner, a psychiatrist employed by Culver University. This differs slightly from his comic book origins. He still shares a complex past with Thaddeus Ross and contributes to the Battle at Culver University. Since then, his character has not been seen. Both Betty and Thaddeus appeared (in minor and major roles) in “Captain America: Brave New World”, but Doc Samson was absent from that story.
2) Liz Toomes (Laura Harrier)
Last Seen: Spider-Man: Homecoming
In the movie “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, Liz Toomes, who is often seen as a potential love interest for the new Peter Parker, played a significant role. Given this, fans hoped to see more of her in future films. However, due to her father, Adrian Toomes (also known as The Vulture), her relationship with Peter Parker became quite intricate. During the film, there was an intense battle between The Vulture and Spider-Man, leading to Adrian’s arrest. This didn’t necessarily mean the demise of Liz and Peter’s blossoming connection, as she wasn’t aware of all the details.
Unfortunately, the audience didn’t get to witness how Liz and Peter’s story might have unfolded after the events at the dance. Although we know Liz visited her father in prison, her character was not featured in subsequent films. Their ending presents a mixed picture – on one hand, Peter had an opportunity to apologize for his actions at the dance (though only about what he could discuss with her). On the other hand, this was their last on-screen encounter. There’s always hope that future movies might revisit their story, but as time passes and Liz remains absent from the screen, it seems less probable.
3) Aaron Davis (Donald Glover)
Last Seen: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Fans have been thrilled ever since Donald Glover was chosen for the role of Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, it’s a bit unexpected that no further developments have been made regarding this character and actor pairing. In the comics (and Spider-Verse movies), Aaron Davis is Miles Morales’ uncle and the notorious Prowler. Therefore, the introduction of Aaron Davis into the MCU is significant, and fans were eager to see where the plot would unfold from there. Unfortunately, the story hasn’t progressed much in this regard yet.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Aaron Davis, also known as the Prowler, had a brief cameo. The story unfolds when Spider-Man (Peter Parker) swiftly captures Davis for an unexpected interrogation. However, things take a humorous turn during this questioning session. Although Peter manages to extract some valuable information, he learns a hard lesson on how not to question a suspect. As the scene concludes, Davis realizes he’s still attached to the car with webbing, forcing him to miss his meeting with Miles. So far, Davis has not made another appearance in the MCU, but a different version of him appeared in “Across the Spider-Verse.
4) Madame B. (Julie Delpy)
Last Seen: Avengers: Age of Ultron
In the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) viewers were given insights into Black Widow’s past. These glimpses into her backstory featured scenes from the Red Room, where Madame B. and Dreykov were prominently present. Essentially, it was revealed that she played a crucial role in training Black Widow and other female assassins. However, contrary to expectations, when Black Widow got her own film, it was Dreykov who took center stage instead of Madame B., contradicting our assumptions about her involvement.
Despite the prolonged anticipation for a standalone Black Widow film, it’s somewhat disheartening that no significant character from her past was included. The absence of Madame B. leaves room for speculation; perhaps Dreykov eliminated potential threats, or maybe she met her end at the hands of one of her own students (a fitting twist, given its karmic implications). However, without the Marvel Cinematic Universe offering definitive explanations, these theories will remain mere conjectures.
5) Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly)
Last Seen: Guardians of the Galaxy
Rhomann Dey delivered an intriguing character in the initial “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie. As a part of the Nova Corps, he served as a fitting adversary for Peter Quill during his Ravager phase. Furthermore, he provided some comedic moments, offering viewers an amusing twist on the role of a Nova Corps member. Some Nova enthusiasts had hoped that this would pave the way for more development, but regrettably, it hasn’t (thus far).
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), neither Rhomann Dey nor the Nova Corps have returned after their last appearance. In Avengers: Infinity War, it was hinted that Thanos destroyed Xandar where the Nova Corps were stationed. This suggests that both Rhomann Dey and the Nova Corps might have perished while defending their planet. Although we can hope for a different outcome, until the MCU provides more information, this is what we know so far. A potential Nova TV series could provide answers to our questions, but we’ll need to wait and see.
6) Dr. Helen Cho (Claudia Kim)
Last Seen: Avengers: Age of Ultron
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by characters like Dr. Helen Cho who subtly weave their magic into the narrative tapestry. In the grand scheme of Avengers: Age of Ultron, she might have seemed to be operating in the shadows, but her contributions were pivotal. With a genius-level intellect and the head of U-GIN Research Group, she’s a powerhouse geneticist. If you recall, she made quite an impact during her appearance in that film. It all began when the Avengers found themselves in dire need of her healing touch for Clint Barton. The story took a dramatic turn, as we’re all aware of how Ultron came into being, accidentally created amidst the chaos. Dr. Cho was then abducted by Ultron and tasked with creating a body for him. With a bit of cunning and help from unseen hands, she sabotaged the process, an act that came perilously close to costing her life.
It’s fortunate that Dr. Cho managed to survive Ultron’s attack. What’s more significant is that the foundation for Ultron transformed into The Vision’s new body, paving the way for a well-loved character and all plots related to him. However, since then, we haven’t seen Dr. Helen Cho again. Her last appearance was at the Avengers Compound, which might suggest that she moved in there, or it could imply that she declined the opportunity to stay.
7) Dane Whitman (Kit Harington)
Last Seen: Eternals
As soon as it was announced that Kit Harington would play a secondary role in Eternals, it sparked speculation among fans about the plot’s deeper layers. Sharp-eyed comic enthusiasts quickly identified the character, Dane Whitman, from Earth-616. Over time, he has been called many names like Bloodwraith, Gan Josin, The Pendragon, but is most commonly known as the Black Knight. Given his complex background and rich comic book history, fans were eager to see how his narrative would unfold.
Unfortunately, we’re still in limbo regarding those answers. Although Dane Whitman acquired his iconic Ebony Blade during the end credits of Eternals, no further developments have been revealed yet. At last, a mysterious voice inquired if Dane was prepared for the blade, leaving that plot point unresolved. Here’s to hoping that Dane’s story is one of many hinted at in the credits but not yet fully explored.
