In many instances across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s the combined efforts of Earth’s strongest heroes that help them conquer overwhelming villains and cosmic perils. However, imagine if the Punisher, characterized by his unconventional justice methods, unexpectedly entered crucial scenes. The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, operates on a distinct moral ground, often choosing direct action instead of diplomacy or retreats. His military background, tactical acumen, and relentless pursuit to eradicate those he believes are beyond redemption could potentially disrupt the usual flow of Marvel films, leading to abrupt, harsh conclusions.
As Frank Castle, about to debut on the silver screen in “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start“, the future of Marvel Cinatic Universe villains is now significantly more ominous. Here are seven Marvel films that could potentially take a dramatic turn if Frank Castle were to join the action.
1 & 2) Avengers: Infinity War / Avengers: Endgame
The dramatic occurrences in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” revolved around Thanos’ carefully crafted scheme to obtain the Infinity Stones and eliminate half of all life across the universe, a move that would have faced a significantly different kind of opposition if the Punisher had been part of the team from the start. Unlike the Avengers who might ponder over strategy or discuss the morality of sacrificing one for many, the Punisher wouldn’t hesitate. His sole objective would be to eliminate the threat posed by Thanos. He would immediately recognize Thanos as the mastermind behind evil and would tirelessly pursue him, employing any method available to put a stop to him before he could amass even a single Infinity Stone.
In a cosmic game of chess, Frank Castle’s strategic abilities and readiness to employ deadly force would make him an unpredictable and formidable piece. Unlike other players who might get caught up in lengthy skirmishes or listen to Thanos’ speeches, Frank would swiftly capitalize on any vulnerabilities, launch sudden assaults, and strike at the source when even Thor failed to do so. As the Avengers grapple with the ethical dilemmas of their actions, Frank views his mission as crystal clear: stop a mass murderer. This single-minded determination and ruthless effectiveness could easily derail Thanos’ meticulously planned strategies, potentially thwarting the snap altogether and eliminating the need for the grand, cosmic consequences depicted in Avengers: Endgame.
3) Spider-Man: Homecoming
In “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” I faced off against the Vulture, Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keaton – a cunning scavenger who turns Chitauri technology into weapons. As Spider-Man, I’m still learning the ropes of being a hero, and my focus is on saving lives and apprehending villains using conventional methods. However, this approach often results in prolonged battles that cause significant collateral damage – a fact that reflects the complexities of my character.
The Punisher, or Frank Castle, will take care of Adrian Toomes’ illegal arms trade and the danger it poses to innocent people. Unlike Spider-Man, his approach won’t be about rehabilitating criminals or prolonging conflicts. Instead, he’ll act decisively, with no room for debate. The Vulture’s high-tech suit might make things tricky, but Castle’s military background, understanding of weaponry, and expertise in urban combat will quickly kick into gear. He’ll exploit vulnerabilities in the environment, use strategic distractions, and his goal would be to either disable or eliminate Toomes before he can inflict harm or expand his operations. While Spider-Man aims to save lives without causing deaths, The Punisher’s method would bring a swift and final end to the Vulture’s criminal activities, potentially shielding many citizens from the consequences of Toomes’ actions.
4) Captain America: The First Avenger
In the movie “Captain America: The First Avenger,” we meet Steve Rogers, a skinny yet brave character who transforms into the powerful superhero we recognize. Using his enhanced capabilities and a firm moral compass, Steve battles against the Red Skull and HYDRA. Conversely, Frank Castle is fueled by a different type of “super-soldier serum” – an unyielding determination and disregard for anything but eradicating evil. Unlike Captain America, Frank doesn’t require superhuman strength or an indestructible shield to eliminate a Nazi leader; he only needs a target and a way to reach them.
The Punisher consistently fights for justice by sneakily entering HYDRA labs with ruthless precision. Any plans by Red Skull to rule the world would be swiftly ended by lethal retaliation. Frank, who has mastered combat in countless real-life battles, can either bypass or destroy HYDRA soldiers to confront Red Skull directly. However, Steve’s physical improvement and ideological struggle might not last long because Frank would just kill the villain. If given a chance, he might also track down and eliminate Adolf Hitler.
5) Thunderbolts*
In the comic series “Thunderbolts,” a motley crew of characters, not exactly heroes but with shades of heroism, consisting of Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent, Ghost, Taskmaster, Red Guardian, and later Bucky Barnes, find themselves on a mission given by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. However, they soon realize they were tricked into a deadly trap.
Their frantic escape leads them to cross paths with Bob, a man suffering from amnesia. As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that Bob is none other than the proto-Sentry—a weapon born out of a superhuman project. The problem? He can’t control his immense powers and when he loses control, he transforms into the Void—an embodiment of his pain and insecurities.
The plot thickens as the team decides to help Bob understand himself emotionally and learn to master his powers, to prevent the Void from causing catastrophic destruction in New York City.
to swiftly eliminate the Void before the destruction could proliferate. While the Thunderbolts strive to penetrate Bob’s consciousness and help him, The Punisher would concentrate on a decisive, lethal resolution rather than attempting to relate with him. Regardless of Bob’s heart-wrenching past, The Punisher would only perceive the possibility of catastrophic consequences and employ every tactical edge and lethal means at his disposal to ensure the Void is permanently terminated, thereby resolving the movie’s central conflict prematurely and thwarting Bob’s path towards redemption.
6) Guardians of the Galaxy
In the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, the destiny of the galaxy is determined by a dance competition and the strength of camaraderie to overcome Ronan the Accuser. Though Peter Quill’s unusual strategies prove successful, everyone lets out a relieved sigh once the ordeal is over. If Frank Castle somehow found himself in space, though, the final battle with Ronan would unfold quite differently. There wouldn’t be any chase for the orb, no playful dialogue, and definitely no unexpected dance-offs. The Punisher’s method of dealing with Ronan would be straightforward and unyielding.
Instead of prioritizing disabling or eliminating the Kree extremist, using any tools or strategic positions at his disposal, Frank would aim to neutralize him swiftly. With his military training, he could identify and leverage Ronan’s vulnerabilities decisively. The notion of a dance-off as a diversion against a mass murderer like Ronan would be not only absurd but also appalling to Frank. For him, the goal is to put an end to the danger as rapidly as possible, bringing Ronan’s destructive rule to an abrupt close with a lethal strike rather than a showy spectacle. This way, Xandar can be saved without the assistance of celestial intervention.
7) The Avengers
In simpler terms, Loki, known as the Trickster God, excels in deceit, control, and complex plots to reach his ends, frequently engaging in mind games with both friends and foes. In the movie “The Avengers,” he cleverly orchestrates an alien attack on Earth for personal gain. Loki’s strength lies in his guile and stirring up turmoil. Yet, his deceptions and illusions would be largely ineffective against Frank Castle. Although Loki is a god and the Avengers possess the Hulk, Frank has a weapon – a gun.
The Punisher remains unfazed by Loki’s deceptions and theatricality. He avoids lengthy discussions on moralities or falling victim to Loki’s transformative abilities. Instead, he recognizes Loki as a treacherous and controlling adversary responsible for brainwashing and causation of death. Upon encountering a sudden wormhole at Avengers Tower, Frank would promptly investigate the origin of the chaos and bring an immediate, impartial end to it. A well-aimed shot, or possibly several, would efficiently thwart Loki’s plans before he manages to exert control over others or manipulate them further. It won’t take long for Loki to discover that despite his divine might, he is by no means immune to a resolute individual armed with a firearm and an unyielding sense of justice.
