Marvel Comics is famous for its epic superhero stories and large-scale conflicts, many of which have inspired blockbuster movies. With so many compelling characters constantly putting themselves in danger, it’s natural that romance blossoms. Over the years, Marvel has given us some truly memorable love stories that fans adore. The marriage of Reed and Sue Richards is a prime example – it’s become a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe. But unfortunately, not all of Marvel’s initial, strong relationships have endured.
Superhero stories often feature a lot of drama, and romance is a particularly popular source. Unfortunately, the publisher has prematurely ended several promising relationships, seemingly to create more conflict. Here are seven Marvel romances that fans believe deserved a longer run.
7) Scarlet Witch/The Vision

Scarlet Witch has become the Sorcerer Supreme and is considered one of Marvel’s most significant characters. She first gained recognition as an Avenger, where she met and fell in love with the Vision, a synthetic being. They married and even had a family, though Wanda created her children using complex magic involving a portion of Mephisto’s essence. For years, they were a central couple within the Avengers, but a storyline briefly turned the Vision into a villain, separating them. While Marvel has hinted at a reunion, they haven’t brought them back together despite strong fan desire.
6) Peter Parker/Mary Jane Watson-Parker

Before finding lasting love with Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker dated several people. After Gwen’s tragic death, his friend Mary Jane Watson began a relationship with him, and they eventually married in the 1980s. For many years, Mary Jane was considered Spider-Man’s wife by a generation of fans who adored their connection. However, Marvel’s editors didn’t approve of the pairing and controversially ended their marriage in the storyline “One More Day.” Since then, Marvel has hinted at reuniting them, but has repeatedly changed course, leaving fans disappointed.
5) Wolverine/Mariko Yashida

Wolverine is famous for being a fierce fighter, and that’s been true since his introduction. However, during a groundbreaking period of the Uncanny X-Men comic book series, he fell in love with Mariko Yashida, a wealthy woman from Japan. They quickly connected, and were planning to marry after Wolverine unintentionally killed her father, who was a Yakuza boss. Unfortunately, an attack by villains Viper, Silver Samurai, and Mastermind disrupted their wedding plans. Mastermind manipulated Mariko with his powers, leading her to call off the wedding. Even after learning the truth, she felt the shame was too great, and they grew distant. Later, Logan was forced to end her life painlessly after she found peace with an envoy from the Hand, Mat’suo Tsurayaba. While she has since been brought back to life, Wolverine and Mariko haven’t rekindled their relationship.
4) Sam Wilson/Jane Foster

During the mid-2010s, Marvel introduced significant changes by replacing some of its most iconic heroes. Sam Wilson became the new Captain America, and Jane Foster proved worthy of wielding Mjolnir, transforming into the Goddess of Thunder. Together, they joined the Avengers in the All-New, All-Different Avengers series and developed a charming romantic relationship. Their connection was fueled by both attraction and the shared pressure of living up to the legacies of their roles. Unfortunately, the relationship didn’t last, and both characters are currently single.
3) Captain Marvel/War Machine

As a huge Marvel fan, I always thought the Captain Marvel and War Machine relationship was interesting. They both had similar journeys, you know? Starting as supporting characters and then really stepping up to become major heroes. It felt good to see Carol find someone who understood that, and it definitely gave Rhodey a chance to shine outside of Iron Man’s shadow. Sadly, it didn’t last, and it really seemed to affect both of them. It’s a shame, because since then, Rhodey’s kind of faded into the background, and Carol… well, she feels less like a fully realized person and more like a symbol, lacking those relatable, everyday struggles that made her so compelling initially.
2) Havok/The Wasp

Havok has always lived in the shadow of his more famous brother, Cyclops. Similarly, the Wasp, while an original Avenger, never quite reached A-list status. These two found themselves on the Uncanny Avengers team and quickly developed a romantic connection that surprisingly lasted even after the Earth was destroyed during the “Ragnarok Now!” storyline. They spent years battling the mutant leaders of Planet X and even had a daughter, Katie. Unfortunately, they were forced to alter their future, which strained their relationship. Later, a change in their moral compasses ultimately led to their permanent separation. Though it was a good match for both of them, their relationship was ultimately destined to fail.
1) Cyclops/Emma Frost

Cyclops and Emma Frost were a prominent couple in the Marvel Universe for over a decade, from 2004 to 2016. Their connection began psychically before Jean Grey’s death, and they became a couple after the tragedy. Together, they led the Xavier Institute and guided the mutant community through difficult times, particularly after the events of House of M. They had strong chemistry and helped each other grow, but Marvel later killed off Cyclops and turned Emma into a villain, then brought Jean Grey back into the picture. While they’ve shared some playful moments since then, they haven’t rekindled their relationship.
