Super soldiers are more important than ever in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though the original phase has ended. With Steve Rogers gone, several characters are now carrying on his legacy. Bucky Barnes, his longtime friend, is working to make amends for his past actions and has even become a member of Congress. John Walker is still focused on his own goals and hasn’t found the same path to redemption, but joining the New Avengers could help him learn the value of doing what’s right. Overall, the future looks bright for super soldiers in the MCU.
Even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) seems to have explored almost every super-soldier concept, it’s risky to underestimate Marvel Comics. With almost a century of stories, the comics have developed many characters similar to Captain America that haven’t yet appeared in the MCU. Here are seven of those super soldiers still waiting for their on-screen debut.
7) Nomad
Captain America is a popular hero with kids in the Marvel Universe, and Jack Monroe was a particularly devoted fan. He was persuaded by William Burnside (who later became Steve Rogers) to take an experimental version of the Super Soldier Serum and impersonate Bucky. Unfortunately, the serum severely damaged his mind, causing him to attack the original Captain America upon his return. Luckily, Captain America showed compassion and instead mentored Monroe, leading him to become the hero known as Nomad.
6) Union Jack
During World War II, Brian Falsworth went undercover and was given a version of the Super Soldier Serum. His initial mission was to battle the Nazis, who had murdered his friend, Eric Schmitt. When he returned home, he became the hero known as Union Jack and fought with the Invaders. Though his career wasn’t lengthy, Union Jack had a notable history, including a memorable encounter with Thor.
5) Luke Cage
Luke Cage hasn’t joined the main Marvel Cinematic Universe like characters such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones. However, when he does appear, he’ll likely fit right in, as his powers come from experiments similar to the ones that created Captain America. His incredibly durable skin makes him a difficult opponent, particularly for anyone relying on firearms.
4) Dr. Mindbubble
In both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics, S.H.I.E.L.D. is relentless in its pursuit of new weapons and technologies. This leads them to scientist Horace Littleton in an attempt to create another Super Soldier Serum. Littleton develops a unique, LSD-based formula, but when funding is cut, he becomes disgruntled. Renaming himself Dr. Mindbubble, he takes the serum and uses the resulting powers to target Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.
3) Steve Rogers
While Steve Rogers is known as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the title has been held by others. When William Burnside stole the super-soldier formula from Monroe, he became Captain America himself. But, like Monroe, Burnside’s mental state deteriorated, forcing him into a frozen sleep. Unfortunately, this didn’t fix the problem, and he later resurfaced after being brainwashed and leading a group of neo-Nazis.
2) Johnny Nightmare
Frank Castle, the Punisher, connects with Jake Niman, a man who shares a similar tragic past – the loss of his family. Seeing a kindred spirit, the Punisher helps Jake track down those responsible. However, the trauma proves overwhelming for Jake, especially because he’s been enhanced with the Super Soldier Serum. Driven to the edge, he becomes the villain Johnny Nightmare and unleashes chaos on New York City, forcing the Punisher to confront a challenge like never before.
1) Josiah X
For years, the U.S. government secretly tried to recreate Captain America, using Black soldiers like Isaiah Bradley in risky experiments. When that wasn’t enough, they genetically engineered Isaiah’s son, Josiah. After serving in the Vietnam War, Josiah discovered the truth about his origins and turned to work as a mercenary. Ultimately, he found his purpose as a hero, joining a team led by James Rhodes.
