Superheroes and supervillains are fundamentally opposed forces. Heroes consistently prioritize others, while villains are driven by self-interest. Their conflicts aren’t just physical fights; they represent clashing beliefs. Usually, the heroes prevail, and often they attempt to redeem their enemies. Despite their wickedness, some villains are influenced by the heroes’ compassion and are repeatedly given chances to change. While it doesn’t happen often or last forever, some villains do ultimately turn to heroism.
Let’s talk about some Marvel villains who actually deserve a chance to be heroes. We’ll be looking at seven characters who either have a good side to them, have previously teamed up with the good guys, or would simply be fascinating if they switched to saving the world instead of threatening it. We’re defining ‘deserve’ as either having hidden goodness or possessing the potential to be a compelling hero, even if it’s a surprising change for them. So, let’s dive in and consider these Marvel villains.
7) Ultron

Ultron is a major threat to the Avengers – a robot obsessed with controlling all living things. He was built by Hank Pym when Pym was struggling with mental health issues, and the two share a deep connection, even having merged into one being at one point. Just as Hank Pym was able to overcome his dark side, Ultron may have the potential for change as well. Created by a hero at his lowest point, Ultron isn’t necessarily doomed to be a villain. In fact, nothing could be more heroic than finding redemption. The parts of Hank Pym within Ultron could allow him to tap into a hidden heroic side and finally fight for good.
6) Typhoid Mary

Typhoid Mary is a compelling and ultimately sad figure. She has limited psychic powers, but these come with a deeply fragmented mind and severe Dissociative Identity Disorder. Her different personalities clash – some strive for goodness, while others are destructive – but they all yearn to become one cohesive self. Through her complex relationship with the Kingpin, Mary began to integrate these fractured parts, finally giving her a chance to be a complete person, embracing both her strengths and weaknesses. She’s now on a path to discovering her true self, and while she won’t necessarily be a traditional hero, she’s far from simply a villain. The story of Typhoid Mary trying to become a hero – or even just prove she can be one – would be both incredibly moving and engaging.
5) Absorbing Man

Carl Creel, known for being a tough fighter who often battled powerful heroes like Thor and the Hulk, eventually tried to turn his life around. During the Immortal Hulk storyline, he abandoned crime and joined Gamma Flight, seeking an honest living. Creel embodies the classic “tough exterior, heart of gold” character, and it’s satisfying to see those types of characters choose a better path. While he briefly acted like a hero with Alpha Flight, his morals became uncertain after the team disbanded, before his eventual death. If he were to return, a compelling story arc would be seeing him dedicate himself to helping others avoid the mistakes he made.
4) Rabble

Raneem Rashad, also known as Rabble, turned to villainy after believing Spider-Man, Miles Morales, had destroyed her life. This resentment deepened with each encounter, fueled by a deep loneliness that she masked with anger. Despite her actions, Miles persistently tried to reach her, hoping to show her that even though things were difficult, she could find a better path. Finally, during their last fight, Miles got through to her, and Rabble ran away. Now, she has the opportunity to listen to his words and use her abilities to become a force for good in the world.
3) Stilt-Man

Stilt-Man is often seen as a silly villain – a guy who uses oversized metal stilts to cause trouble. It’s hard to take him seriously! However, he actually has the potential to be a compelling character. He was a real threat in the recent Daredevil comics, even becoming one of the heroes Matt Murdock tried to mentor. Stilt-Man seemed genuinely inspired to change, but he vanished when Matt’s team fell apart. During that time, he proved he had a good heart, even saving a child and comforting them with a smile. He deserves a chance to show that he’s truly reformed. Even if he remains a bit of a comical figure, he could at least be a villain who brings a little joy.
2) The Leader

The Leader has always been one of the Hulk’s worst enemies. During the Immortal Hulk storyline, he almost destroyed everything just so he could be the sole survivor, but surprisingly, the Hulk ultimately forgave him. Immortal Hulk focused on the importance of self-forgiveness, and showing the Leader mercy after taking away his powers is a fitting way to develop his character. It opens the possibility for him to regain his intelligence and choose a path of heroism. He could use his brilliant mind for good, mirroring how the Hulk channels his rage for positive purposes. This would create a compelling parallel, honoring what many consider the greatest Hulk story in decades.
1) Thanos

Thanos is arguably the most purely evil character in the Marvel universe. He enjoys causing destruction and has a disturbing obsession with Death. However, beneath his monstrous exterior, he once dreamed of a peaceful life as a farmer. He abandoned any heroic impulses long ago, but it would be compelling to explore that side of him. Ultimately, Thanos craves acceptance and connection, even from those he opposes, though he’d never openly acknowledge it.
Showing Thanos as a hero, even for a short time, would make his villainous turn even more shocking and impactful. It would allow us to explore a hidden side of his personality that’s always been hinted at, but never fully revealed. Plus, it would offer a fresh take on his story – the kind of innovation that often defines classic tales. While Thanos is known for destruction, seeing him as a savior would be completely unexpected.
