Marvel Comics is known for its incredible villains, and Thanos stands out even among them. He first appeared as an enemy of cosmic heroes like Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock, and after initially being defeated, he returned in the famous 1991 comic, Infinity Gauntlet. By collecting the powerful Infinity Gems (known before the movies as such), Thanos became a major threat, launching him to legendary status during a record-breaking year for comic sales. He’s a uniquely complex character—a terrifying villain driven to achieve his aims, no matter the cost. He’s become so powerful he’s essentially an unstoppable force, even frightening gods.
Though famous for fighting heroes, Thanos has also clashed with some of Marvel’s most dangerous villains. Driven by his desire to wipe out all life, he doesn’t discriminate – and that includes other villains. He’s faced off against seven of them, and surprisingly, a few have even managed to beat him.
7) Ahkenaten

Though often portrayed as a villain, Thanos has actually saved the universe on several occasions. In the story Marvel: The End, he regained his godlike status by defeating Ahkenaten, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who had been granted incredible power by alien beings called the Celestial Order. Ahkenaten returned to Earth with this power and threatened the planet, but Thanos stepped in to defeat him. While Ahkenaten was a typical, overwhelmingly powerful villain, his immense abilities made him a serious danger.
6) Kang the Conqueror

Kang the Conqueror is a major enemy of the Avengers – a powerful warlord who travels through time and aims to overcome the strongest heroes across all realities. He’s a relentless fighter, even taking on Thanos. While Kang is clever and a strong opponent, Thanos is used to defeating incredibly powerful beings, and ultimately proved too much for him. Kang has challenged and even won against Thanos in some alternate timelines, but the main version of Thanos consistently prevails.
5) Thanos

Thanos is considered Marvel’s most formidable villain, consistently defeating all his opponents. Because so few characters can genuinely challenge him, writers have often created scenarios where Thanos fights alternate versions of himself. A prime example is in Infinity War, where the Magus created a new Thanos to serve as a weapon, ultimately leading to a battle with the original Thanos in Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch #10. Thanos has also clashed with versions of himself from different universes and even future iterations, like King Thanos in the story “Thanos Wins.” Battles between different incarnations of Thanos are common, and it’s likely we’ll see more of them in the future.
4) Mephisto

I’ve always been fascinated by Mephisto – he’s truly the most well-known devil in the Marvel Universe, and it’s amazing how he’s tangled with practically every major character, even Thanos! They’re definitely not friends, though. Mephisto is all about power for himself, while Thanos just wants to cause destruction until he wins over Mistress Death. I remember reading about what happened in Infinity Gauntlet – Mephisto pretended to be a supporter when Thanos got the Infinity Gauntlet, hoping to snatch it for himself! He even tried to take advantage during the battles against Earth’s heroes and the cosmic beings, siding with them in their attack, but he failed. Honestly, Mephisto hasn’t had much success against Thanos at all, but you have to admire his persistence – he just keeps coming back for more.
3) The Magus

The Magus is a future version of Adam Warlock who rose to power as the leader of the Church of Universal Truth and ultimately conquered the universe. He attempted to invade the present, but was defeated by Warlock, Thanos, and other powerful cosmic characters. This villain resurfaced after Warlock purged his own evil side while wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. In Infinity War, the Magus devised a complex scheme to achieve godlike power, launching a simultaneous attack on multiple enemies and exploiting the resulting chaos. Thanos fought alongside Warlock and the heroes to prevent the Magus from gaining control over reality.
2) Galactus

Galactus is an incredibly ancient being in the Marvel Universe. He began as Galan of Taa, from a previous universe, and was the sole survivor when it ended. During its destruction, he was infused with the energies of creation, transforming him into the World-Devourer. Since then, he’s played a crucial role in the universe’s survival, even battling Thanos on multiple occasions. He was a key leader among cosmic entities during the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, but ultimately lost. Over the years, Galactus and Thanos have fought repeatedly across both the main Marvel universe and alternate realities, with neither consistently winning.
1) Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom is considered Earth’s greatest villain, but surprisingly, he also wants to ensure the planet’s survival – primarily so he can eventually rule it. This shared goal has led to several conflicts with Thanos. Doom even aided the heroes during the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, managing to survive the incredibly deadly battles within issues #4-6, which is a remarkable feat considering the stakes. Since then, they’ve clashed repeatedly, and Doom has actually won more often than not. They are fundamentally opposed and destined to be enemies forever.
