The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a huge success story in modern film, but it doesn’t always get character development right. Starting with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in 2008, the MCU quickly became one of the most ambitious shared universes ever created for the big screen. While the movies have successfully brought many Marvel characters to life, adapting comic book stories for a wider audience, they sometimes take liberties with those stories. This approach has led to massive popularity, but it doesn’t mean every character is handled flawlessly.
It’s common to see MCU characters who are less powerful on screen than they are in the comics, and sometimes they’re almost unrecognizable. But it’s particularly disappointing when Marvel doesn’t seem to understand how to best utilize a character, essentially wasting their potential. Whether it’s through limited screen time or a lack of compelling stories, many MCU characters feel mishandled by the franchise.
7) Hawkeye

Hawkeye has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011 and was one of the original Avengers, but the franchise surprisingly underutilized him for years. Although he finally got his own show in 2022 – and it’s a very enjoyable one – leading up to that, he was consistently pushed to the sidelines. Looking back, it’s clear Marvel struggled to find a strong role for him within the larger MCU, which meant missed opportunities for compelling stories.
6) Hank Pym

It’s immediately obvious that Hank Pym is a genius, one of the smartest people in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Marvel Studios struggled with how to use him. They chose to focus on Scott Lang as Ant-Man, largely skipping over Pym’s history with the hero role. This was probably because Tony Stark had already established himself as the Avengers’ primary intellectual force, leaving Marvel unsure of how to give Hank Pym a meaningful place in the MCU.
5) Red Skull

Captain America’s first movie introduced the Red Skull, a formidable super soldier and his classic comic book enemy. Though initially appearing to be destroyed by the Tesseract, the Red Skull later returned as the keeper of the Soul Stone. However, Marvel struggled to integrate him into the larger MCU storyline as the significant villain he was meant to be.
4) Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch is incredibly powerful, arguably the most magically gifted person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, her story has been confusing and inconsistent. She started as a villain, became a hero, and then repeatedly faced tragedy, eventually being pushed back towards villainy. Despite showcasing her immense power, Marvel Studios seemed unsure how to develop her character, ultimately leading to her abrupt and disappointing death.
3) Nick Fury

Samuel L. Jackson is undeniably a major star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his portrayal of Nick Fury was essential in building the shared universe we know today. However, since the early phases of the MCU, Nick Fury’s appearances have felt disjointed and unplanned. While he’s shown up in various prequels, side stories, and supporting roles, it never feels like Marvel has a clear direction for his character.
2) Ulysses Klaue

Andy Serkis’ portrayal of Ulysses Klaue was a surprisingly strong addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character was reimagined for the films, which actually worked better for the overall tone of the franchise. After making a memorable debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Klaue returned for Black Panther, but his story was cut short. He was a fun and compelling villain, but Marvel ultimately didn’t seem to have long-term plans for him.
1) Vision

Vision has incredibly powerful abilities that often go unnoticed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, mainly because of how his story has been written. He started out as exceptionally strong, but his powers were quickly diminished throughout his appearances. He was underutilized as a supporting hero, and the franchise eventually seemed to move past the character altogether. Although Vision is scheduled to return in VisionQuest, it appears Marvel still isn’t quite sure how to best utilize him.
