The introduction of Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is set to make him the most powerful villain in the Marvel Universe, but this could create issues for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the last few years, the MCU has steadily increased the power levels of its characters. Since Avengers: Endgame, several incredibly strong heroes and villains have appeared, making it difficult to justify why Doctor Doom would be stronger than all of them. This is further complicated by existing characters like Hulk, whose power has already been reduced through his Professor Hulk persona.
Let’s examine which powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe need to be weakened or removed to make the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie believable.
7) Carol Danvers

Carol Danvers is incredibly powerful, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had to limit her involvement in major events because she’s capable of solving them on her own. For example, in Avengers: Infinity War, she wasn’t present on Earth when Thanos eliminated half of all life. She later returned after the snap and joined the fight in Avengers: Endgame to help defeat Thanos.
Captain Marvel left Earth once more, stating she needed to focus on protecting the universe as a whole. This was partly to avoid interfering with Doctor Doom’s schemes in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s important she stays away until it’s too late, because Doctor Doom struggles to succeed when Captain Marvel is present.
6) Phoenix/Dark Phoenix

Although the X-Men haven’t officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, they’re expected to appear soon, and their arrival could create complications in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Whether these are the MCU versions of the X-Men or characters from the X-Men ’97 series, one hero stands out as a serious threat to Doctor Doom: Jean Grey. She possesses even greater power than Carol Danvers.
Jean Grey has a complicated history with the Phoenix Force. In the early X-Men films, becoming Dark Phoenix led to her death. The more recent reboot showed her transforming into Phoenix and surviving as a cosmic entity. She also takes on the Phoenix form in X-Men ’97. However, Doctor Doom’s actions create a version of Jean as Phoenix that is far too powerful to be plausible within the established story.
5) Thanos – From Other Realities

Thanos was defeated in Avengers: Endgame not once, but twice. First, the Thanos who eliminated half of all life was killed by Thor after refusing to acknowledge the wrongness of his actions. Later, an even more dangerous Thanos arrived from another timeline, nearly destroying everything. It took a combined effort from all of Earth’s heroes – and ultimately, the sacrifice of Iron Man – to finally defeat him.
As a huge Marvel fan, seeing Endgame and Multiverse of Madness really opened my eyes to just how many alternate realities there are – and apparently, multiple versions of even villains like Thanos! It got me thinking… if Thanos is such a massive threat across all these Earths, wouldn’t someone need to deal with him before anyone else can really make a move? I’ve been hearing whispers that Doctor Doom might actually take care of a Thanos variant, maybe even snatching the Infinity Gauntlet in the process. It would definitely clear the way for Doom to become the biggest power in the multiverse, wouldn’t it?
4) Loki

Loki has always been a strong character, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe often removes him from conflicts when the story requires it. For example, Thanos killed him early in Avengers: Infinity War, preventing him from helping defeat the villain. Now, though, Loki is more powerful than ever. He’s currently responsible for guarding the entire multiverse and is the only one protecting the different timelines.
If Doctor Doom plans to reshape reality into a single world called Battleworld, he’ll have to do so even with Loki trying to stop him. This essentially means Doom has two options: either eliminate Loki, similar to what happened in Avengers: Infinity War, or find a way to strip Loki of his power and influence.
3) Kang

Initially, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) planned to use the Council of Kangs as the villains in a storyline called Secret Wars, setting it up through both the Ant-Man and Loki stories. However, after legal issues involving actor Jonathan Majors, Marvel changed course. They removed Kang and replaced him with Doctor Doom, a change that actually aligns the movie plot more closely with the original comic book version of Secret Wars.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe can’t ignore Kang’s existence, and needs to explain why the Council of Kangs isn’t interfering with Doctor Doom’s schemes. It’s likely someone will die to resolve this. While nothing is confirmed, if Doctor Doom gains the expected powers from Franklin Richards, he’ll probably seek out and eliminate the entire Council of Kangs to ensure they can’t hinder his plans.
2) G’iah

Many viewers probably don’t remember G’iah. She’s the daughter of Talos and Soren, a Skrull refugee who came to Earth to escape the Kree Empire. During a fight with the powerful Skrull villain Gravik (who had abilities similar to the Super-Skrull), G’iah gained her own powers. She ultimately demonstrated just how strong she’d become by defeating and killing Gravik.
Many fans thought G’iah would become a Young Avenger with heroes like Kamala Khan and Kate Bishop, but she hasn’t been seen since the Secret Invasion series. Despite this, she’s still on Earth and remains one of the most powerful young heroes because of the Super Skrull Machine. It’s unlikely she’ll be killed off, as the Young Avengers likely have a role to play in future Marvel movies, but she probably needs to sit out the action until Avengers: Secret Wars.
1) Sentry

Okay, let’s talk about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and a serious power imbalance. If Marvel wants this movie to feel like a real threat, they need to address the Sentry. Seriously, this guy, who we just met in Thunderbolts, is on another level. He’s arguably the most powerful being on Earth, and honestly, he could probably defeat Doctor Doom without breaking a sweat. The problem is, that makes the stakes feel pretty low. While he’s not invincible – there are ways to take him down – the writers need to find a believable way to sideline him, weaken him, or even remove him from the equation if they want Doomsday to feel like a genuine challenge for the Avengers.
The recent ending of Thunderbolts revealed Sentry’s reluctance to use his powers, fearing the return of the Void. This mirrors his absence from the World War Hulk storyline in the comics and generally keeps him sidelined in large-scale events. Another option is for Doctor Doom to offer Sentry assistance with controlling his abilities, potentially turning him into an ally, much like Molecule Man did in previous comics. Finally, the story could simply eliminate Sentry early on, as his immense power level would make him too difficult to manage as a hero in Avengers: Doomsday.
